Why does there even need to be a summer event? I don't get that. People are going to come to the park because it is summer, and theme parks are what most people think of doing in the summer. Events during the spring, fall, and winter I get, because you are trying to drum up extra business. Summer events just seem like overkill. Other than the concerts, I can't see why having an extra summer event would attract more people than were already planning to visit.

My answer to your question is: to keep locals coming back again and again. If you've ever been there on a Friday or Sunday night, then you know that there aren't a lot of people in the park. BG is trying to find ways to keep people, like me (I'm local), interested in coming back over and over. It's the special events that keep me coming back, otherwise I would only go just a few times a year. I can appreciate the basic beauty and tranquility of the park, but I want something more for additional return visits. I don't want the park to remain static. I think they (BG) understands that and they want to create a diverse experience for us throughout the year. I welcome all the special events, even if it means sacrificing the look (ie clocktober).

What?!?! Did you not visit BGW during Illuminights last year? Every change made to the look of the park was dreadful. I only visited the park twice during Illuminights season because I couldn't bear it. That's bad.

You know what, I don't get how you can even say that. You don't care about the look of the park? Huh? The look of the park is really the sole thing that separates it from the Six Flags chain. When you forget about the look of the park, it loses what makes it special and people look elsewhere for quality entertainment. The look of the park was awful thanks to Illuminights last year, and I don't think the park's beauty is something that should be sacrificed for disco snails and scaffolding.

While I agree with the majority of what you're saying, Joe, there's no need for such antagonism. Every person has their own preferences. Celticdog has some very valid points in that post, and while I would also not wish to sacrifice the aesthetic quality of the park in favor of a special event, special events are a pretty big need for the park.

I apologize for my over-enthusiasm there, but that really caught me off guard. I still stand by everything I said. Never did I say his points were invalid. I simply stated facts as to why I disagree. Again, I apologize, but I would like somebody to point out where I was being antagonistic. My first point was about why I avoided the park due to Illuminights. My second paragraph was about not understanding how the look of the park is unimportant.

I don't understand why we have to apologize for over-enthusiasm now? I thought over-enthusiasm was the whole point of this site!? Joe didn't say anything that was directly offensive to Celticdog, he was just questioning the way Celticdog thought, and then Joe said what he thought about the subject backed up with opinions and facts. We have the right to debate, and say anything we want to about a topic on this site, and that's exactly what Joe was doing. Joe didn't say anything antagonistic directly to Celticdog.

Actually, the tone of his post came across as fairly aggressive and dismissive.  I do not know how it was intended, but how you say something matters almost as much as what you say.

This comment looks like an attack: "You know what, I don't get how you can even say that. You don't care about the look of the park?"

You accused him of not visiting during Illuminights and you basically created a point that anyone who liked Illuminights last year was wrong because you felt it was terrible, or at the very least that is my understanding of your post.

I think post tones are highly overlooked when people are posting. Its not about how you intend the post. It is about how other people feel when they read the post. Just because it may seem like "asking questions" and then "giving an opinion" does not mean other people will see it like that.

No, no I did not accuse him. I asked if he visited Illuminights last year. I did not say anyone who liked Illuminights was wrong. I thought it was bad, so I did not visit the park. Celticdog himself said that the event impaired the look of the park, and I was saying why- in my own opinion- I think the look of the park matters.

Nic, I meant to say that. I am saying that I do not understand why that is, in my own opinion. Did I say his own opinion was wrong? No.

The comment calls him out and forces him to make a black or white decision on the spot with no shades of grey.

Well it's true, if you liked Illuminights last year, you're wrong. Why would we lie to you?

Yes, those were my opinions. And I was asking if he visited during Illuminights last year, since he mentioned Clocktoberfest which was not at the park in 2013.

Differing opinions can be equally valid...

First of all, nothing in that post was an attack. An attack is something like this: "You're an A$$ h0l3" or "I'm going to kill you for saying that," those are attacks. Nothing that Joe said was an attack, they were all simply disagreements, and Joe has a right to disagree with an opinion. I understand some of you don't like debates or "arguments," but Joe has the right on these forums to express his opinion, and debate with whoever he wants, and that's exactly what he was doing.

Everything Matthew just said is spot-on. Thank you so much for saying that.

That infers to me that you are forcing him to choose between not caring about the look of the park and caring about the look of the park in a certain way that you can understand/get.

Like I had said earlier and Nic brought it up, the overall tone of the post came to many of us a negative and attacking. Because the tone of the post is not something that is spelled out in your face directly, it can be different for everyone. I honestly do think that while you had good hearted intentions Joe, your post just seemed like an attacking post.

Notice how no one said your opinion was wrong? We are saying the tone of your post along with two sentences that made the overall post seem aggressive.

For the record, I see no rules being violated here. Could and should you people be more civil? Probably, but nothing here is breaking any rules.

That said, it should probably be dropped. Everyone knows where everyone stands.
