Hurler is pure pain, but the presence of Shockwave at the park makes even Hurler seem acceptable.
Shockwave actually likes me. And I like it back. It's one of the coasters at the park that has a soul. But you have to know how to ride it or Shockwave will bite back. Sort of like Nessie. But with Hurler I still haven't had a good ride.

My issue is not that Hurler is rough. In fact, barring the first turn it's the smoothest of the park's full-sized wooden coasters. I just find the layout incredibly un-inspired and lacking in anything special. The only true reason why I like Hurler is how picturesque it looks in front of Juke Box Diner, and of course that relaxing hike through the long maze of empty queues.

I'm sorry, did you just compare Shockwave to Nessie?

Okay so whats up with the Hurler, I thought it was gonna close but then I see it running mid-way through the summer... was there track work?

It was closed during the spring as it was still undergoing off season maintenance. One or two 20 foot sections were redone, but that's it. It was nothing that made the ride better in anyway. Just off season track work I'd guess.

It reopened early May and has been open since then. Everything else is just speculation about it closing. Everyone wants it to close. But that's it. It'll close around 5pm on Saturday and Sundays for Halloween Haunt.

I am certain Connor did not mean to place the two in the same category. I am certain he meant that Shockwave has a personality.

I didn't use to feel this way, but I find Hurler more ridable than Grizzly now. I use to despise Hurler and preferred Grizzly, but this season and last season I've had terrible experiences with Grizzly. I'm not sure if this is the case, but it seemed like Hurler improved some how last season.

This is the first picture I've ever seen of some of the Wayne's World theming in Hurler's station. Thought I'd share.

I didn't see this noted elsewhere, but the brick backdrop along the wall was removed for the 2014 season.

When it first opened the area was quite impressive. It only lasted a few years and they started to remove elements, starting with the cars.

They did delete the comment. I remember reading it. It does make you wonder if they're not doing as extensive work on our Hurler because it is on it's way out in the next few seasons? Matt Ouimet did want to remove one coaster from all the big parks.
Also, Carowinds' Hurler was a bit rougher through that section of track than KD's. It would make sense to make Hurler more 'rideable' since Fury 325 was going in right next door. I'm sure it'll give more rides this season due to it's proximity to Fury.

Still a shame KD let Hurler run to crap. The KK version and the Carowinds version apparently run extremely well thanks to the refurbs both parks have been pulling.

KD should've at least kept the props in place in the station. The station looks boring compared to some of those opening year shots. Keep up the soundstage theme but use generic movie props sorta like FOF's hangar.

The most entertaining part of this coaster experience is waiting in the front seat line. (if there is even a wait) Watching the coaster round the first turn from this spot is absolutely hilarious! Everybody in the coaster, as a collective, looks like an ice tray full of jello that has been flipped over onto a washing machine running on the spin cycle. I can 100% guarantee a giggle of some sort watching this.

My experience on Carowinds's Hurler:

So, I rode Carowinds' Hurler today.

GCI quite literally outdid themselves with the renovations they did to the first turn. Simply put, it's masterfully done. That first turn was even smoother than the turns on Evil Knievel when I rode it on its opening year (original GCI creation at SFSL). It truly is icy smooth. That said, the rest of the layout wasn't touched and is still, basically, absolute garbage. In all honesty though, the taste of a true, quality woodie that the first turn now provides just makes me even more bitter that we have to drive so incredibly far to get to a high-quality wooden coaster.

tl;dr: Turn is amazing. The rest of the ride is better used as firewood.

Ignoring the recently rebuilt first turn, I assure you that Carowinds's Hurler runs at least as poorly as Kings Dominion's. I've heard grand things about Kentucky Kingdom's since its retracking, but I'm afraid I can't really see Cedar Fair investing as much money into KD's or Caro's Hurlers as KK gas into their clone. :-/
