Last sunday i went and the straight jackjet creature person was in wendigo woods.A crazed scientist approached me and the creature jumped on his back and was laughing maniacally and growling.this all happened well within 5 feet of me and was one of the coolest scares ive seen all year.I went yesterday and exepreicned all the mazes and shows(except for fiends unfortunately) and this is my formally informal Howloscream report.

MAZES
(Keep in mnd this is just according how badly I and my friends were scared/startled)
In ranking from best to worst....

1) 13:Your Numbers up - This was a total surprise, as the actors were perfect at timing and hiding. When i entered the first room, funeral homes, I felt like it was gonna SUCK! cause i remember it being bigger and better, and muttered, "Wow, the fear of flower arrangements..." as if on cue, a scareactor came out of the flower arrangements and startled me.I had several moments like this where I would say something and an actor would have the best of timing.
The only bad part was a whole lot of black curtains where there use to be more details. Some deadzones, but otherwise had a great time!

2) Root of all Evil- My first time going through Root, and I loved it! Normally I hate dangly bits in my face, but here it felt right! Some dead areas, like 13, but some really good scares, plus the one greenhouse had the best fog effect, where it looked more like a mister than fog.Even had a moment where I scared another guest. Some family was being obnoxious and their little kid kept poking me and bumping into me. When she went to scare the actors and guests through a wall, I turned around and growled at her and scared her half to death....it was a good day.

3) Cutthroat Cove- Maybe its just nostalgia speaking, but the maze had slightly better decor(minus the removal of the heads),and it is the only maze where I see characters.Every other maze its just a jumpscare. CTC is truly atmospheric, and worth going through for some good fun.

4) Bitten- haven't been through this in quite some time so , to me, it was new again. It had a few scares that i liked but otherwise, it felt dead and empty.Another one of those mazes that should have better scares, should have better theming but misses its mark, but doesnt suck totally.

5)Catacombs- I didnt know Skeletons screamed! The detail I loved before i hidden by darker lighting and empty spaces. The onl cool effect i saw was the scareactor above you, reaching down at you...otherwise it was just Monster Stomp rejects in a dark maze.

6)Deadline- What does Deadline have in common with Chicago or detroit? A LOT!Graffiti, drug crazed lunatics, darkness, horrible plumbing, and gunshots.
There was so much dangly bits that i couldnt see the theming at for 85 percent of the maze. The scarers were lacking, the effects were annoying, there was no lighting in most places, literally making you get lost in a straight line...It isnt cool or creepy its just annoying. Definitely a shell of its former self.

SHOWS

1) Monster Stomp on Ripper Row- This is what i wanted in a Howloscream show. Something darker, sexier, and bloodier. And it delivered! Better usage of image mapping by far, my only complaint is its too short!

2) Night Beats- While my second and last show im revieiwing, by far not bad! They fixed the lacking numbers and removed the godawful jitterbug dance...the death dance was a million times better with the addition of set pieces and more costume pieces/props.

TERRORTORIES

1) Wendigo Woods- God, i love this area! The electric fence effect was cool, but what i really love is the actors! They put a lot into it,especially the scientists.

2) Demon Street- While this one didnt scare me, it scared my friends a lot due to chainsaws, and it was awesome to watch.

3) Ripper Row- Empty, lacking, and boring. The only redeeming factor of thia area is the decor.

4) Vampire Point- Saw a shack being put up,nowhere near finished.windows are barred...nothing fr the vampires to work with, but bless their hearts they tried ...which is more than can be said for...

5) Ports of Skulls- Oh.My.God. Horrible makeup and sets, this truly proves that when it comes to Terrortories and scarezones,Italy is the redheaded stepchild of HoS. Creepy stares arent enough to scare people, DO something!

I don't have time to do a full review at the moment as I still have to work on a Halloween Haunt update for KDFans, but my visit yesterday was sad. I expected a whole lot more out of this event. I've always read that BGW has better looking mazes/ houses and have higher quality items. To put it simple. I have no idea what any of you are talking about.

Every single maze and one territory contained cargo nets. EVERY SINGLE MAZE. They also contained some sort of twine string. I didn't pay attention if every maze had it but at least half of them do. I experienced the same stuff, but used differently all over the park. It's not like there was a little bit of cargo netting either. Each maze contained a good chunk of netting. Is there a deal at the local Walmart or Target right now?

There isn't any variety in the design of these mazes. They are all the same, but with a different layout and a few different sections. I was appalled by this.

The territories are sparsely themed in my opinion. The areas contained virtually no props on the ground. No I'm not saying they don't have anything. I'm saying there wasn't much. I can dig into that later on if I do a full review.

I think when anyone speaks of quality at BGW, it's 2012 and earlier...

I didn't even realize my review was my 300th post. Hooray! As for the netting and lack of props, its due to a stingy budget and the fact the park took away all the heads due to a stupid reaction to a newspaper article... Each year the park looses guests and the even suffers.either that or all their money goes to certain things ((watch towers for WW,MSoRR,etc.)) Also they are still putting stuff in,as they constructed one of the shacks for VP,but it was barely decorated.HoS is notorious for never being finished until the last few weeks...

^I don't think that's even the case, when it comes to BG and it's love affair with things dangling from the ceiling.

I think it's because they legitimately don't know how to set up a house to be scary, so they hope by distracting you with constant annoyance of dangly things so low it'll take a cell phone out of your pocket. (Happened to me opening weekend. to be fair tho I have a bunch of things hanging off my phone.) Not to mention I've been nearly strangled so many times by things hanging down.

I have to hunch over so many times in these houses because of some of the dangling things combined with low walkways. I feel bad for anybody who's taller than I am.

And the thing is, the mazes would be fine without all the dangling things. At least in terms of decoration. Staffing is a different issue entirely.

That would be shredded burlap sack brushing you in the face around every turn. My least favorite thing about this event.

Some of us do go for other reasons besides visceral scares. Because of my "neurological" condition, I actually can't tolerate an excess of aggressive sensory stimulation, such as scares. So for guests like me, there needs to be a range of attractions, such as shows, food & drink and good decor, to make an event worthwhile. Of course I do (conceptually) appreciate of good scares, mazes and houses, so I prefer haunted venues that can manage a multifaceted event that can provide different, satisfying experiences to as many guests as possible. Based upon reading various reviews and summaries, I'm not sure Howl-O-Scream provides that this year.

I have to agree with a few of the posts above. Evan's review seemed to leave out the "Sex" part of Howl-O-Sex. Massive problem with his review if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure Open Casket is the best circular, vampire-themed bar involving caskets and a sign that reads "Open Casket" in the entire country. These are details Evan is clearly missing.

Please don't count my post as a review. I left out a lot of "feelings" in that post. I just had to say something about the cargo netting in every single maze and this event not brining much variety to the mazes. I did watch all of the shows, but I'd like to sit down and write a full review. That won't be tonight though *yawns*

Can we please stop with the sex references. Star Spangled Nights has nothing to do with porn or sex at all. Those who think so must have extremely dirty and inappropriate thoughts. Also for children to be using the word 'porno' on a constant and regular basis seems extremely inappropriate. I understand wanting a more relaxed discussion environment but there is a line when things become overly inappropriate.

As Howl-o-Scream is concerned, Halloween in general is celebrated very diversely. There is the family fall types of celebrations, the horror types of celebrations, and the party types of celebrations. Having an equal balance between all three forms of celebrations is ideal. That is how you cater to various audiences. With Howl-o-Scream I feel that there is no real balance but a blending between family fall and horror with the other half of the event presented in a party type atmosphere.

Honestly, I feel as though the houses and terror-tories are not extremely scary and are weak but not family friendly at all. I really don't mind that because this actually helps those nervous about haunts get acquainted to having fun while being scared. If you want to introduce someone who is scared to haunted houses, this is probably the best place to do so. While it isn't the best horror event, it is tame enough to cater to a wider audience while still being somewhat scary.

As for the party atmosphere, it is something that has become more and more popular. It is not uncommon for young adults to throw Halloween parties. Alcohol and "naughty" costumes are typically a part of that. It gives people a change of pace and helps add to the demographics of the event.

I seriously feel that everyone is over imagining the sex within the event. Sure if you look hard enough you can make anything as sex related as you want. But it truly is sickening to continue to read how everything is considered to be sex-related in some way. Is it really too hard to step out of the gutter?

*waits for complaints*

It is one thing to point out actual sexual parts. It is another to to go through and nit pick each part of the event and make it sexual in some way possible. For example, a cage does not always mean sex.
