If this is the beginning of the end of Volcano, I wouldn’t be happy to see it go but I wouldn’t be sad.

I wouldn't say that. As I understand it, is truly a delay in needed parts; parts that would be needed for any typical maintenance. You could essentially equate this to when a coaster is shut down for an extended period in the middle of the season because of something like the lift chain breaking. I don't forsee Volcano going anywhere any time soon.

I don’t disagree at all. That’s why I said if it’s the beginning of the end.

I just look at the fact of I’ve held a pass for 3 years and it’s been down for a good portion of the summer all three years, and at some point it just becomes economics.

I would rather Volcano stay closed for the season so it can get permanent solutions to its reliability problem (updated launch technology).

If Volcano did go the logical thing is to just tear down the entire mountain and build a new attraction in that spot.

That mountain isn’t going anywhere for a while. It’s currently in the middle of a multimillion 10 year renovation. Even if (and that is a pretty big if) they got rid of the ride, I would fully expect them to repurpose the mountain itself.

I wonder if they will ever be able to hide at least some of the unthemed structure inside. That has never been a big problem for me, but I wonder why they are taking so much time with the mountain refurbishments.

Going to go out on a limb and say no. The refurbishment is "moving so slowly" because the back end of the Volcano was in very poor shape. I don't even think they're done with the back end of the Volcano actually, they barely did anything to the front at this point.

You couldn’t do much with the mountain. It’s small in there.

Lance Hart of Screamscape is reporting this rumor:

"I must stress that this is only a rumor at the moment and nothing more, but according to what I'm starting to hear, Volcano: The Blast Coaster will be closed until next season because at leave one piece of track is in need of being completely replaced inside the Volcano. This is said to be the reason for the extended downtime due to not only the time it will take to have a new custom piece (or pieces) of track made, but also the location inside the volcano is only going to make things even more difficult."

It's a little scary that it ran at the beginning of the year if this is true. Barring something significant that we haven't heard about it see odd that what ever wear caused the issue was missed during preseason inspection.

They probably ran it so they could assess how quickly the damage woud progress, to see if it was an issue that could wait until next offseason or not. My guess is it progressed faster than they expected and they closed it to prevent more damage.

I am fairly sure the coaster could safely operate in its current state, they just don't want to cause more damage that makes it an even bigger problem.

Either that or they are all buffoons and the inspectors need a good tongue lashing

Call me an optimist :/

It's my understanding that Lance's source is working with old information.

I have someone citing very solid evidence that the park is still hoping to open Volcano before the end of the season.

It still has 3 months. I believe the park is intending to get it back open but I would not be surprised if it doesn't. They've been silent on a timeframe about it which is super annoying.

Or they simply don't have a solid time frame yet often giving bad info causes more problems then being quite does.

Take this with a grain of salt, but here:

(9/4/18) For anyone wondering, one of our readers dropped into Kings Dominion over the weekend and questioned guest services about the status of Volcano: The Blast Coaster. Unfortunately, they confirmed to them that Volcano would indeed be closed for the "rest of the season". Better luck in 2019.

Just talked with Guest Services and it seems that they are unsure wether it will reopen at the beginning of next season either...
