If recall correctly Universal makes you go through metal detectors when you board the rollercoasters to make sure that you put items in a locker. Granted I also remember their lockers being free.
They do. Incredible Hulk and Rip Ride Rocket both have one. But they also have a part of the queue where it's basically a waiting plaza for those who didn't listen and need to exit the line to put things away (Hulk) or have the lockers right next to the metal detectors (Rocket). Either way the metal detectors are basically at the entrance to the ride, and not at the station where you're SOL if you actually decided you want to get a locker for your small items.

But the difference is that at Twisted Timbers, you don’t need to exit the queue of you have a phone like at Universal. If I’m understanding correctly, the purpose of the metal detector is just to make sure guests take their phones out of their pockets, to increase the likelihood that the phone ends up in the zippered pouch.

Now that I think about it, this policy seems less foolish and disruptive than I first thought.
 
Hulk is the one you have to physically exit the queue. But even then, its maybe 20-30 feet of queue away from the entrance of the ride. Rocket's metal detectors are right next to the lockers, which is also right next to the exit of the ride, you don't even really get to the queue before they tell you to put your stuff in a locker.

The issue though is, even if people physically pull stuff out of their pockets, how long are they willing to actually hold it before just shoving it back into their pockets. Considering some people wear cargo shorts with their entire lives in their shorts.

They've never before said keys or other objects smaller/lighter than a phone are not allowed.

Nailed the problem on the head. There's nothing between the metal detectors and getting on the train that prevents guests from putting their crap back in their pockets.

Make your lockers free and this problem won’t exist.

In reality I saw someone come up with a great idea of different application, same idea. A two sided locker system with the entrance queue on one side, exit queue on the other, that happens just before the station. Have someone at the start letting so many in at a time, and someone at the other end making sure everything is in the lockers. Then you go right into the station where only 1 to 2 trains worth of people are there meaning 5 minutes at most without your phone.

It's a great idea yes, but is hard to implement and utilize correctly for a park that has to shut down half its rides for 3 months out of the year due to staffing issues. Also with the queue path layout of Twisted Timbers the only potential spot for these sort of lockers to be put in is by the photobooth, meaning people will be waiting the entirety of the line without their phones (the exact thing that put KD and Cedar Point in this situation to begin with).

@b.mac that persons idea wasnt KD specific. It was amusement industry in general that started as a potential idea for DD at IoA when they started the policy.

Rather have slow operations and safety high than fast operations and safety low.
