They're called the Vikings because so many people in Minnesota have Scandinavian ancestry, not because of evidence that Vikings once roamed the land.

Clearly the Viking invasion theme is the perfect "thematic" excuse for the park slowly retheming New France into Scandavia. What might have brought upon this unlikely invasion, though? Perhaps the Vikings were angered by the removal of their favorite Food and Wine kiosk...

Read up.  Archeology shows evidence that Vikings settled all the way into the mid-west.

There is a major difference between settlement and invasion (which is the theme of the new ride). Show me histroical evidence that the Vikings pulled their ships up to a port in the middle of the midwest and started invading the people that lived there!

Look up the Kensington Ruinstone.

It's Runestone, not Ruinstone. Many scholars from the top universities in the USA and Scandanavia have debunked the stone as a fake with no ties to Viking history and lore.

I mean, the Minnesota Vikings are called such for a reason.

The football team is named Vikings because that area is the centerpiece of Scandanavia-American culture. Not because of Viking invasion and settlement.

Has anyone or is anyone willing to lay over the new layout with Google earth? It would be nice to have something to judge it off of to be exact...or I'm just not an expert at reading blueprints.

I wish they would just go ahead and retheme to scandanavia if they want vikings, but themes are not very consistent anymore anyway. Cars in the middle of Octoberfest? And the worst of all, by far, a daredevil bicycle rider in Marco Polo's festival? This is not nearly as bad. That said a consistent Canadian or Scandanavian theme would be preferable.

I'm very excited to hear Busch Gardens is getting a woodie! I've always wanted them to get one. Although I'm excited, I was hoping for something more like Outlaw Run, which is still only 2,937 ft of track. I'm not writing it off though, I'm sure it will still be a very fun coaster. It just sounds more on the family friendly side.

I voted for InvadR too, for it does fit with the rest of Busch Gardens' roller coasters. I'm still excited for the fact that the park is getting a wooden roller coaster for the first time ever, this is going to be an interesting season alright.

RE: Project 2017

My thoughts after the announcement: "Wow!" I was so impressed by the Viking theme! What a creative, adventurous idea to tie New France's history to the new coaster!

Then I remembered that the period in history when the Vikings invaded present-day Canada and the period when New France was settled are separated by about 600 years. And now I'm just confused. Sure, the park is free to use creative license, but for a theme that is seemingly based on history, it's a bit of stretch.

They're basically rewriting history completely to get this theme to work.

So now, when you realize that the whole theme is based on a nonexistent conflict between two real, historical groups that existed over half a millenium apart from each other, with one having dominated the sea and the other having settled in the Canadian wilderness, it begins to look like a nonsensical mish-mosh of ideas. Which is straight-up confusing. And it will make anybody with a basic knowledge of world history say "Huh?" when they visit the park and realize the ride's outrageous theme. The shameless mix-and-match of eras would be like putting a Battle of Hastings-themed ride in the 17th-century themed Banbury Cross area.

That said, the ride itself has me super excited. The thought of a wooden coaster twisting through the woods, interacting with Le Scoot, and hopping over the train tracks has me feeling pretty giddy. And if you completely ignore the silliness of the details of the theme, it's a pretty cool idea at its heart: a battle between the French trappers and foreign invaders. Which, in a vacuum, sounds damn cool.

Oh, and the names suck. :p But I could live with "Invadr" if I had to. Sort of like how "Verbolten" wasn't a particularly great name, but it was sure as hell better than "Black Forest Turbo" or "Uber Bahn," which still terrify me that those names were even options for our Zierer coaster. But, like "Verbolten," eventually you eventually get used to things over time.

So despite my poo-pooing on some of the coaster's aspects, I'm super excited nonetheless.

RE: Project 2017

I know I am probably in the minority here, but I think "Invadr" sounds and looks like a Cedar Fair name.

While I don't love any of the options, to me "Viking Raider" sounds the most like a traditional BGW coaster name. Until Verbolten, they were all characters, if that makes any sense? The names gave a sense of their being dangerous, but also having personalities. In other words, like previous coasters, "Viking Raider" would represent a definable, individual creature.

RE: Project 2017

I know everyone is a little upset about the name thing. But we did have a coaster called Big Bad Wolf. If you take off your nastalgic goggles for a second you'd see that's an awful name but it never affected you all before.

RE: Project 2017

Very good point, Nicole. Reminds me of the lunchboxes that the park used to give out with kid's meals. Their design featured each of the coasters' "characters": a wolf, a sea monster, a gilded Roman god, a snow monster, and (briefly) a griffin. Nowadays, I suppose you could technically squeeze a stunt biker in there as a character (although he would look silly in the company of the other creatures)... but a sports car? Eh, no.

That said, I think the argument could be made that "Invadr" could also refer to a Viking character, if you consider a single Viking to be the invader being referred to. But I agree, Invadr sounds VERY Cedar Fair, almost like a follow-up to Valravn. But on the other hand, I think "Viking Raider" is too generic... so pick your poison.

RE: Project 2017

Out of all the names on the list Invadr is only one that doesn't sound ripped off or completely ridiculous and for those interested Invadr is in the Norse spelling instead of the English spelling which is Invader. A nice touch I might add

RE: Project 2017

I think "The Spirit of the Black Forest" is the true "Monster" of Verbolten, while I could give an argument that Tempesto is the demon of the great daredevil, daring innocent park goers to recreate his "greatest stunt" without anything going wrong.
