Balak, anything can be a name. The general public will just call it "that [insert color of coaster here] coaster". Most people couldn't care less about what the thing is called.

Good point I never thought about that, but aside from the general public bgw usually has names for it's coasters that actually mean something or at the least make sense.

Well, we can't assume that an amalgamation of verboten (forbidden) and "bolt" (signifying something fast) doesn't fit the theme the coaster will have. It may fit the theme perfectly.

I think the play-on German words is kinda cheap. It would work in a German park but not an American park themed after Germany. People will think "Verbolten" is a real German word.

Verboten is a "real" German word, also I guess were going to have to wait until we know more about the coaster to judge whether the name suits it or not

Verboten is a real word, but the name trademarked is Verbolten, which is not a real word.

Not to get off topic, but I admire your use of the word "amalgamation," Chris. It's one of my favorites.

I side with Arrow on this. While I enjoy puns and word play, I find an amalgam pun of an English word and a German word unnecessary. Without doing some kind of background research, only a few German visitors and that guy that took five years of German will even know what it means. I do enjoy its cleverness, but it seems rather superfluous to the name of a ride, though I think it's better than the tacky Six Flags names that use real puns. Those annoy the crap out of me.

That griping aside, I'd take a name like Verbolten over Cheetah Hunt any day.

Six Flags' names are terrible, they can't come up with good enough names so they use mainstream superheroes.

And I too would take "Verbolten" over "Cheetah Hunt"... and I'd take "Cheetah Hunt" over "Black Forest Turbo" or "Uber Bahn!"

Just a thought on the name Verbolten. Could they have combined two words. Verboten and bolting? I was reading a book the other day that used the word Verboten, and of course was instantly curious because of the name Verbolten. Well Verboten is German originating (recognized as an English word) and it means I forbiden. Has anyone thought that they may have combined the two words Verboten and bolting to form Verbolten? Something bolting (which would explain the launches) through something forbiden (the forest). It is just a thought.

You mean like an amalgamation?

Just giving you a hard time, I agree with you though, that's exactly what they've done with this name.

Exactly. I didn't know if someone had mentioned anything at an earlier point. I am fairly new to this thread and was just proposing the idea. But, if this is the case I do not believe that the name of this ride would be tacky or cheesy it's actually pretty creative and probably took some thought.

Isn't that the very reason why BGW has those videos talking about the ride in the queue?

Just sayin'

When was the last time anyone could really pay attention to those videos, though? But that would be a funny queue recording:

"This name is not as stupid as you think. Verboten is German for 'forbidden' and is combined with the word 'bolt.' On this ride, you will bolt through a verboten forest..."

And, coasterfan, I agree with you that it is creative. That doesn't necessarily make it an amazing name for an attraction, nonetheless. There could certainly be worse names, but I think it will not be as great of a name as the other rides in the park for the GP.

I agree with you. There could be worse names, and there could be better names. However, earlier in the thread people were talking about how dumb the name was and really it isn't that dumb of a name. It's creative, the average person won't be able to figure that it out, and it's kind of catchy.

Keep in mind that in the survey, it mentioned that the coaster is supposed to be themed to the Black Forest, so I assume some story line about it being "forbidden" would come about.

Verboten is actually an English word apparently, though I've never heard of it before. I'm not sure if that makes the name better or worse. Let's just hope they don't do the really bad Six Flags naming job and stylize it as verBOLTen.

According to my American Heritage Dictionary, it is a legitimate English word that is derived from German. It means "rigorously forbidden."
