RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

To people who do not have trained ears, it mostly sounds the same. Which really is basically most the people who visit the park.

Even when you go to a concert with the orginal bands they hit off notes from time to time  but it doesn't affect* the show! I think they do a great job in LR.......

Yes it does.

I agree with ReggaeInMyJeggae. First off, original bands hitting off notes nowadays shouldn't be any justification for BGW to do the same, since thanks to autotuning you don't even need an ounce of singing talent to become a star. It's very easy to pick up on missed notes and it makes any show with off notes seem very mediocre.

It does make a difference. Whether or not you notice it is irrelevant. Down playing the importance of musicality is saddening. Also, considering Super Scott said this is supposed to be a Broadway-esque show, you damn well bet some people have double-downed on the show being, at the very least, musically sound (no pun intended).

I've stayed away from this discussion because musicals are a waste of time and I have no desire to see London Rocks(!) ever, unless I need a cool place to sit for a half hour near the front of the park (and I have a set of ear plugs on me). However, comments about bad playing not having an effect on a show is kind of egregious to anyone who plays music. Why even bother if no one is going to notice?

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

Trying to understand. Poor quality is fine, because we have such a low opinion of BGW guests?

I have said for a while that I can't decide whether Scott has incredibly poor taste himself, or simply assumes that I do. Maybe this is a systemic issue? Maybe BGW thinks that park guests are tasteless and lack any standards and discernment. Thus, they can easily pacify us with sub-standard music and random pieces of bacon on a stick?

For the record, I consider myself an average park-goer. I am not a trained musician, and the poor singing and playing bothered me at several shows. I won't bother discussing the dancing again.

For the record I didn't say what is right or wrong. I just said people who don't know how to tell of something sounds right or not won't notice. Which is mostly true. There are some who can tell and most can tell if it is really really obvious. I for one can't tell because I've never been interested in learning about music. As long as it sounds decent I don't care. I applaud those who do care and work hard to be very good. Clearly it takes time and effort.

That said. I'm not saying if being close to on point is good or bad. Make your own opinions.

While watching the show yesterday.. Three family's got up and left during the "Make out Session"

In the two shows I saw Saturday. The first show, 4 families got up and left when the druggy part went on. For the record, one of the more noticeble changes that happened was that they are stressing the drugs and 'high,' state of that period. Families were outraged when I saw it, I was appalled.

I think when I first heard about this show I had a couple dreams about families being outraged about the drugginess in the show. Either that or I experienced a huge case of Deja vu.

The second show I saw, too many people to count left the theatre during that part.

When my group took the survey, people around us who were also taking it were outraged, I can only imagine the reviews they gave the show.

Don't let her fool you, she has an unnatural sence of timing and rhythm. Also her ear is excellent. Believe me, I want nothing more than to say horrible things, but even I can't say snarky things about my sisters talent. (oh god the pain, it hurts me so!)

According to a study in the journal PLoS ONE, in June of 2013, less than 10% of the population is actually tone deaf, further withing that 10% in most cases the persons brain can still identify a sour note. It turns out that even without any kind of training 90% of the population can listen to 2 notes and identify the one that is "wrong"

I would postulate that while people may have bad taste, no taste, or different taste, and some people may just have a lower threshold for entertaining than others, it is a leap to assume that people can not hear the sour notes.

I do not believe that you need training to be able to hear when someone is singing or playing off-key. Yes, some people probably can't hear music, but I don't believe that most people are tone deaf.

**I just Googled it and came upon a statistic that said only 1 in 20 people are have amusia.**

Regardless, the ability to hear pitch is a natural skill, not something that is learned. Training will improve your ability to interpret and reproduce what you can hear, but it can't change your physical and neurological strengths and weaknesses. (You might be able to mitigate tone deafness, with work; I honestly don't know.)

So, assuming the interwebs are not completely off-base, I would imagine that a majority of people going to shows can tell when the music is bad.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

When we took the survey, the computers were set up on very close high-tops. I heard many people saying the singers were off-pitch/bad. And we stressed it very much in the comments section also.

I'm pretty sure I got almost every concern that has been stated here so far. It took us a while, but I think I got every thing down. When the box came up with what we liked about the show, my whole group could only come up with two things.

Wow, we are really having a discussion about park-goers' perception of pitch. Ok. As a musician myself, I notice mistakes in shows all the time and it doesn't bother me. There's a strong distinguishment between a performer who makes a quick mistake and one that is downright terrible. Every performer of every kind makes mistakes. Honestly, even if a park guest does take notice to an error in the performance, it won't ruin their day or the whole experience.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

No, it's not a 'mistake' in their singing, it's that they are constantly off pitch throughout entire songs.

Is this really happening? I watched the show last week with a friend of mine who has a degree in music education (and has some of the best sense of pitch among anyone I've worked with) and he and I were having a tough time deciphering if they were even lip syncing or not. The park tends to hire quality performers and I have yet to walk out of a show and say "That performer blew it."
