RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

OK, y'all. I kinda feel the need to interject myself into this snark-fest. Unless/until y'all actually see the updated version, I'm not sure that one liners about burning or drowning or otherwise destroying the show are reasonable.

The original version wasn't really that bad. A lot of the complaints were targeted at logistics and effects, not the quality of the show, itself. Did it have problems? Sure. But is certainly wasn't worthy of a bomb threat.

I tend to despise dialogue in theme park shows, and I loath audience participation. I understand both are being incorporated into LR 2.0. Until I actually see the result, however, I don't think it is fair for me to dismiss the show as being akin to Entwined.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

Well, to be fair, there really isn't a huge amount of dialogue. Some of it feels unnecessary.
- at the beginning, Lucy tells the umbrella crowd to "Have a sunny day"
-there is some interaction between Lucy and her mom to explain the first scene is her daydreaming while listening to her favorite band
- Lucy calls her mom to tell her she's having triplets (which seems redundant, because it is written out in the screen)
-the kids are told to behave to explain they are going to the aquarium
-the final scene is announced as a concert presented be the queen

Overall, the Help!/80s scene felt the most reworked. There is a clearer picture of the family fighting situation and the kids fearing for their parents marriage.

I liked the show before, I still like it. The cast is so talented and the music great. I can learn to overlook the akward parts (cough,cough..... puppets).

I saw LR today and yesterday and they were two different versions so I suppose they are still trying out possible changes. If either version said anything about going to an aquarium neither I nor my adult children caught it so there may have been at least two another versions tested. Shows had employees soliciting audience feedback via computer at the end.

I really enjoy this show and didn't have a major problem with the story line before the changes except for the Octopus's Garden song because I couldn't understand how they got from the back seat of a station wagon to under the sea.

I guess the aquarium comment addresses that issue, although why they would visit an aquarium and end up 'under sea' is something I've decided not to examine too closely.

The show seems like two different stories. One is the queen's 'trip' from staid, anti-rocker to participatory, rocking sovereign. While incredibly awkward, especially i.e. Bowie's Space Oddity, this story seems straight-forward.

The other narrative seems at first to be the story of a relationship. We meet Lucy: she meets boy, they marry, have children, fight, form a truce, decide on love. But even the initial versions of the show had Lucy and her man exiting the show from opposite sides and either blowing kisses, waving or making the 'call me later' sign at each other. I think I am late to the party in realizing this is a show about a show. This is a show playing in 'England' that embodies the spirit and music of rock and roll that the queen slowly embraces. People recreate the arc of a relationship each show, and now it's been endorsed and promoted by the monarch. Or at least that's what I think tonight. Cheers!

So you are saying it is unreasonable to have an opinion of something I have no experience with?  That is down right Un-American!  I am fairly certain in Smith v the State of Colorado it was determined that Mr. Smith was in fact constitutionally garunteeded the right to have an opinion of the quality, both in terms of speed, appearance, and level of excitement of a certain ski slope despite having never donned skis.  The opinion, written I believe, by Justice Black, the court  said that Mr. Smith was protected by both the 1st and 14th and went on to say that because of this protection his views were no longer "personal opinions" but indeed facts, and thus have just as much validity as a so called "reasoned view."

Incidentally, that the decision had only one dissenting opinion, Justice Douglas.  Odd considering he was usually out front when it came to 1st Amendment decisions.  Writing in dissent, Justice Douglas said that this decision would have a "...lasting and deleterious effect..." on the strength of the 1st Amendment.

Listen to the lyrics. the song goes "I'd like to be under the sea", not 'I am under the sea'. The kids would love to be under the sea, but their parents couldn't afford a scuba diving trip so they had to settle for the aquarium. The aquarium animals, on the other hand, sing the same song because they were taken from their happy home in the sea and would give anything to return to it, but they are trapped within the glass walls of the aquarium.

It all depends on how you interpret it, to me it's just another acid trip in the show.

Sea World strikes again. Someone call PETA

As a former aquarium worker, lots of places are offering up-charge experiences for guests to swim in the tanks. But I can also tell you that the only animal up there potentially smart enough to play an instrument is the octopus. Everything else is just silly.

I saw and Octopus open a jar to get a treat out once. That was a talented Octopus.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

We saw LR for the first time yesterday, so I can't comment on changes. Before I start the review I should note that we love every other show at BG, except Enwined, which we think is decent.

We were sitting in around the 8th row right in the center for the 2pm show.

We thought the biggest issue was the horrible sound quality. The queen was very difficult to understand (and not because of the accent).

Also, we thought the caricature of the queen was in questionable taste, at best. Also, the theater is supposed to be in England, but the British would never parody their sitting monarch like this.

Having the speakers behind us made it seem like they were lip syncing because of the disconnect of where the sound was coming from and where we were seeing the performers. Also we thought it was too loud.

The singers were horribly off key (my daughter has perfect pitch and she said it was drastically worse than any other show at BG she has seen).

The arrangements were awkward and the transitions did not work.

The choreography was boring.

I didn't mind the dialog being there. Having a segway between scenes seems to work.

Costumes were horrible. They looked like they were borrowed from a high school drama department. Lucy's wigs looks like they were snatched from a mannequin at a thrift store.

All You Need Is Love was particularly bad. It should be sung simply and tenderly, not as a big production. The way it was done does not match the emotions expressed by the song.

Attempts at audience participation was pathetic. They should at least choose songs that most all audience members would know.

Puffs of air scared my 2 and 5 year olds because they were so random and out of place. For comparison, they both were amused by the puffs of air at Mickey's Philharmonic at Disney.

My wife's first comment was that it was a half hour of her life we will never get back.

The projections were fabulous.

In short, we would love the show if they got rid of the cast and set the projections to recordings by the original artists at a lower volume.

My mom, dad, and little brother saw LR for the first time yesterday. I asked my parents how it was, and both of them turned up their noses. They actually left the show early. Yes, they got up before the show was over and left.

Thank you PrincessArlenasDad! I don't think it should take someone with perfect pitch to finally tell us that the singers are not right but the truth is they are off pitch. Thank you for proving this finally.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

The only performers who aren't off pitch in the slightest are in Celtic Fyre.

I for one am ok with the changes to the show. As a matter of fact think I like it even better now. I have seen it 3 times over the past 2 days, all to a full house and it looks to me that this show is a hit!!
