RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

I just have one question why are we trying to prove, other people's personal opinions wrong?

I for one think that the park will have a moderately pleasant event. Most likely I will not like some things, but come on, when can you guys say that there was a completely flawless event in the parks history? I've always loved Howl-O-Scream, I will probably like it this year too, but I try not to sweat the small stuff. If you're a person who sweats the small stuff there is nothing wrong with that. And like other people have said I want to wait to see it to make a better judgment. There is great potential for this years event, it just depends if the park is going to use all that potential that they promised they would.
So I have moderately high hopes for this event. BTW it's not that bad to have high hopes/expectations, it helps you pick out the flaws easier. But there's no need to go and try to prove other peoples opinions wrong, and pick fights for no good reason.

So, who liked those triangle banners in France earlier this year, welp their back, but not exactly. Those wonderful vines with lights in France will have black and orange triangle banners hung on them, from what I have seen. Now keep in mind I was driving past trying to pay attention to a road and the decor, so my description may be a little off, but I certainly saw triangle banners mixed with the Food & Wine Festival vines in France.

Now to resume to our current behavior conversation. I know it seems like I praise the park for everything they do. Honestly, I could care less what the park does. When it comes down to it, I go to the park for fun. That fun may not be the unique stuff, but it may just be me being in a place where there is something that inspires fun. KK was not a great show, in fact far from it. I mentioned this earlier and it is something that was overlooked. KK is nowhere near a great show, but it was entertaining. The music used was originally created to inspire fun and good times. That is what I enjoy. Anything that inspires fun and good times.

This can stretch to Howl-o-Scream as well. The event as the information is displayed on their site is exciting. The rumored plans we heard have been exciting. Yes there was a setback in France and plans had to change, but I am not going to cry about it. I don't like that plans had to change. I don't like not being able to walk into Hell. But at the same time, when I hear there will be a DJ, it makes me excited because DJ's create fun and good times. I would definitely take the immersive Hell theme than a DJ Hell theme anyday, but it still sounds like people will have fun and enjoy themselves.

When it comes down to it, the thing that really matters is did you have fun? I have fun always. This is what counts for everything.

Now when they raise the price and they don't offer the same amount if not more fun, then yes there is a problem. But with a new event concept debuting you can't know if people will or will not like it until it happens. Unfortunately this happens a lot in stocks. Prices rise or lower no matter if it's fair or not. They are taking a gamble, and sometimes you just have to go out on a limb and hope things work out.

So many fun pictures to be taken:

Good point PR! I always have a great time at BG, but I do believe the prices are ridiculous. Excluding season passes, you can get into Haunt for I believe $35. And $70+ for HOS. Really?

Completely ignoring the current conversation, because I'm a rebel... or something like that.

So, I was over at a friends house earlier today, and I was talking about Howl-o-Scream with her. Like me, she usually only goes once a year, if that. And I brought up what PR said about Ripper Row, wanting her opinion on the matter. I explained the situation to the best of my memory of how PR said he thinks it'll work. (Using 'thinks' because as the event hasn't started yet, we won't know what will go down.)

The moment I brought up Jack the Ripper grabbing somebody, her first question was "Are they noticeably an actor, or are they wearing street clothes?" I hadn't even mention either side of the argument yet, she just automatically went to that question. Over all she thought it'd be an alright idea, providing they weren't in street clothes. Or if the victims are in street clothes they need to have something on them that clearly marks them to say they are in fact actors, and what they are doing is staged.

I even asked my dad's opinion on the matter. (Although he just told me to ignore everything on the forum, for the sake of my sanity and his.) And the only thing he basically said is that, as long as they are marked somehow as actors, that it'd be alright. However, he's not too worried about the situation over all. He sees the potential harm that could happen, and acknowledges it. But, overall he's not too worried about plans going south.

I don't know, I just thought it'd be interesting to get non-forum members opinions on it.

Interesting insight Applesauce, thanks for sharing!

In other news, I talked to a few people about something other than Aquitaine tonight. Tonight's topic of choice was Cut Throat Cove. It will by no means be a Fear Fair, Dead Line, or Bitten-level house visually, but I see potential here... a lot actually. That said, because Cut Throat doesn't have the atmosphere we saw out of the 2011 houses, the actors are going to have to work extra hard to make the house work. Thematically, it seems very reminiscent of a Kings Dominion house which, as Kings Dominion proves time and time again, can work with great actors. I'm cautiously optimistic at this point about it's ability to get a few scares, but I'm not expecting Busch Gardens Williamsburg-level theming.

This ERMHAGERD PERTY attitude you mention does not work for Halloween at all. While the territories might not be designed to scare people (despite the site's description that they are) they at least need to fit the halloween atmosphere of being in a scary situation. The park already has three shows for people to get this from, there's no reason to kill the mood of Halloween at the park with a half assed street party that breaks the theme. I said this before, if people really want to do a party thing, there are clubs that do this to a much better degree than what the park can do and should go to those places, not a place that is supposed to provide the unique experience of fear. I'll go back to what Zach said, you should not be justifying bad park decisions.

OK, I've seen this a few times and said nothing. But what I keep thinking is that you could say that about a lot of what the park does. Quite frankly, if you want theater, you can go to the theater. If you want a concert, you can go to a concert. Not everyone actually likes these either. Yet, I'll bet that if the park got rid of either you would hear the screams from members of this forum all of the way in Georgia.

I'm not saying that I particularly want a dance party in the middle of HOS. I generally have tried to avoid them in the past. But I have always thought that what the park was trying to do was provide a wide array of attractions for a wide array of tastes.

Ignoring bad things the park does is just as bad as justifying them.

Again. Not what I said at all.

No, just don't avoid criticizing things you admit are awful in an attempt to convince yourself to enjoy them once they come about.

If someone legitimately likes something, it's not my place to judge them for liking said thing. My problem comes when someone says something is bad but chooses to defend it regardless.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

Nic: The shows are theme park staples and are often different experiences than full theater releases. People expect these shows at parks, and at BGW the shows are expected to be less contemporary and more cultural relevant to the theme of the park.

And to be honest, I think concerts don't really belong at the park. They're a cheap cash in to be honest. They don't kill the reason I go to the park though. And let me be honest, I get the idea of focusing in what I like about HoS. What I liked about it is the dark and eerie atmosphere of the park and a dance party kills that.

Zach: "We can't get X so Y will be just fine.". I can't accept that.

By request of our beloved Pretzel Kaiser,

I fully and honestly think Killarney Kommotion is a terrible show. It provides little to no cultural background of Ireland, and is so ERMEGARD PARTY that it doesn't fit.

However, I still enjoy and/or like it.

But something that you obviously didn't think through, was what does the park primarily have:

- Attractions/Rides: Yeah sure, there aren't many of these just around every corner, so yes they are unique,.

- Food & Drinks: They sell the same food that I can and have made for years. Mac and cheese? Chicken Nuggets? Grilled Cheese? All so very original I take it then?

- Shows: You are right, their show are not full length films. But I think what Nic was getting at was actually plays at a local theater. Yeah, they still happen and can be quite common actually.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

Nobody goes to the park just to eat, they are also not a major part of the event. The park is selling the street party as it's major new feature this year. The fact that park is willing to have such gross disregard for what the unique aspects of the event is a bad thing. The party thing is simply a cheap cash in no matter how you look at it.

I think this is the crux of the issue and where we seem to disagree. There are many things that the park offers that I ignore, because I don't enjoy them. But I don't criticize them for having those things available to other people.

Believe me, I understand that an annoying dance party in the middle of an eerie event can detract from someone's experience. For that matter, I think random bars probably can detract, as well (certainly the resulting drunk guests do). But I don't think it is reasonable to expect a regional park to focus on a single sub-set of its audience.

If BGW were in Orlando, or even Florida in general, I would probably agree with you completely. The parks down there can and do specialize and target specific audiences. Maybe it would be better if KD and BGW split the market similarly, but they aren't and I'm not sure if it would work, regardless.

What would be cool is if BGW picked a single weekend during HOS to have a super-creepy, adult-only, trimmed down event. I can imagine lots of fog; very little lighting; a total absence of DJs, shows, and children's events; and a complete focus on mazes and terror-tories. Not sure about ride; BGW without coasters would be kinda sad.)

1. I know many people who just go to eat and leave.

2. I don't think the park is selling the street party, the only place that that is even being brought up is on this forum. Here is the parks description:
Paris is burning. Can you escape before the city is engulfed in flame? Let the smoldering ruins light your way, but beware, fiery fiends lurk around every corner ready to put you on the coals. The smell of a burning inferno fills the air and rumor has it unsuspecting souls will be roasted on a spit. It’s about to get very hot in Paris, so stay cool or you may find yourself going up in smoke.

Nothing there says dance party. If they are "selling" anything, it Ports of Skull, considering that was the first thing up and it is a new area with a new house.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

Nic: I agree the bars will hurt the event as well. The thing is that just like KK, the park had never had to stoop so low as to put add something only because it's popular with the kids. Yes, the park does follow certain trends and the have licensed franchises, but the park had never had to rely on DJs and JLo to entertain everybody. The fact that the park is no longer willing to try to entertain without pandering says volumes.

Okay, so people go just for food, but that's because the food at the park is somewhat unique (not it all) and of a certain quality. The food at the park is well establish like the shows. Slapping a DJ for the sake of having a DJ is hardly unique.

The park is selling immersive territories add the big thing this year. They're making 1/4 of that a street party. They're also flat out lying about what Demon Street is at this point.
