Blue train update....as of sunday there appeared to have been no additional work done from what you could see from the train since the previous picture I posted.

That's what I've been observing too.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they're simply waiting for parts at this point. There's a high likelihood that everything they need will need to be at least relatively custom.

yea, I kinda figure the same thing but thought they would have ordered them early on.

They are definitely working on the blue train now. It was disconnected from the tender and they had ladders all around it. No pics because I saw it from the top on invadr

While I wasnt paying attention until it was almost too late last night on the train but it looks like they may have moved the engine further out of view.

There's a rumor going around the railroad staff saying that after Balmoral Castle comes back online they are going to do extended rebuilds/referbishments of the other two trains as well (taking one out of service at a time). I haven't corroborated this with anyone else, but I thought it was an interesting possibility to bring up.

Makes sense - didn't someone say the CT operations last winter with extra cars put on each remaining train caused excessive wear and tear?

Guessing it wasn't quite enough that they couldn't be used but enough that they probably need extensive maintenance an overhaul would provide?

I think extensive refurbishments on all of the trains are just prudent, when one blows up.

That and their overall age.

But didn't Balmoral Castle blow up because of improper maintenance procedures (something about open flame next to the propane tanks)?

As I understand it it had more to due with them being old and using an older system that doesn't have all the safety features of newer systems. From what I have heard it was a freak accident that occured and that you could replicate the same scenario 100 times and 99 times nothing happens.

The trains were shut down for HOS in order to take time to put safeguards in place. My guess would be if they shut them down it would be to completely redo their fuel systems.

So would that mean you think they've already overhauled at least the tanks on the other 2 trains?
No I said If they shut them down it would probably be to do a complete overhaul and redo their systems. My understanding is that while they were closed post fire they installed safeguards to prevent what happened with the blue train but not an extensive overhaul and update of every part of the system.

I wonder if they're able to do some sort of geabox updates that can provide extra power going up hills from a dead stop?

Maybe they can use some of the spare LSMs from MMXX to give the train an LSM launch element
Or just to get Alpen Express moving again when it has trouble with the uphill grade near the new Oktoberfest station.
