All I have ever seen on this thread is that 80's and oldies music is the absolute best must have for the park and that all other music is trash or not necessarily trash but terrible because they may not be familiar with a particular artist or enjoy a certain artists music.

I personally prefer a wider variety of music than the current trend of bland teenybopper pop mixed with a little bit of country. That being said, I've listened to the teenybopper pop (my nephew loves Victorious and iCarly so I've been exposed to it) and I personally don't like it or the crowd that it draws (middle schoolers).

To me that is being selfish think that other music is terrible because you don't like it, or because you may not be familiar with the artist.

How is it selfish to like an artist over another?

All I am saying is try to be more open minded and accepting of other music preferences, and if you really can not stand it then at least you tried to be open with it.

Coming from someone who listens to deathcore, dubstep, rap, video game/movie OSTs, country, top 40s/classic pop, rock, and everything in between, I absolutely love the fact that Styx is coming to play BGW this year.

If I recall, last year the four concerts they had were diverse, one country artist, one 80s artist, and two teenage artists. That is pretty diverse for just four concerts if you ask me.

Kirk Franklin - gospel
Hot Chelle Rae - pop
Chris Tomlin - gospel
Kellie Pickler - country
Third Day - Christian Rock, I'm not counting that as 80's because they began in the 90's
Victoria Justice - pop

Not seeing any 80's their

At least you have had taken the time to listen to the music and try to like it versus just straight up hating it because it is too teenage without giving the music itself a chance.

It is only selfish if you don't give the other artist a chance, rather than just liking the one artist because they are familiar.

I listen to a wide variety of music myself from musicals to rap, from pop to soul, and I am interested in the Styx concert, I am just not happy that these forums as a whole in particular seem to hate anything teenage related music wise. Individually, I think people should listen to a wide variety of music and give everything a chance before completely hating it.

Three teeny pops and a country. I did forget about the country (she's quite popular with the teens from what I read), but Cobra Starship released it's first album in 2006, not quite 1980s if you ask me. I'm not including the Glory line up since religious music is a special thing where people enjoy the message of god more than the genre.

Point still stands, nobody is asking for pure 80s, they just want the park to get something more than one or two age groups can enjoy. But if that makes them terrible people....everybody should be ashamed of themselves.

That's because a good majority are not teenagers, music panders to certain groups no matter what genre.

Sorry I was referencing the one year they had Pat Benatar I believe. Either way, so what if the park decides to have one or two years of teen pop, they'va had so many more year of just oldies/80s.

Benatar was 2011. I will agree with you about they had no pop whatsoever one year then no rock the next. Diversity is good, and popular. IMO 4 gospel concerts is too much, glad those are being reduced.

People don't look at the park in a long term aspect like we do. Consistent variety is something to park should do every year. From what we've seen so far, the park plans on variety this year and I hope it sticks.

This arguing and fussing over popularity and selfishness in regards to Styx is moot. For some folks, Styx is their generation's Rolling Stones. Though I am a huge 80's music fan, I prefer a wide variety of music. None of the current pop/radio artists have anything on Styx. I don't know if the lines will be long or the park will be full on this day, but rest assured that my buddies and I will be up front somewhere for this show. MR. ROBOTO!! :cool:

You're way off base here PR. No one has been saying "BAN THE POP". They've been complaining that there's ONLY pop. There should be a variety of music (included for free in my pass though). ;)

Regardless, I don't see BGW listed on their tour dates. They are coming to Roanoke in April though...

I`m already not liking this years lineup... is it so hard to find someone *current* thats not a teeny bopper band? thats exactly what the park is missing... its either teeny bopper or 80`s or country... Styx isnt the park changing, considering they got hot chelle rae again, it seems to be more of the same... highly polarizing with no in between.

I think everyone is missing the big picture here
The park is going to book bands that are going to bring in a crowd of people that are going to be there all day and eat play games and spend money.
Alot of the newer "pop" bands are going to draw a younger crowd that is not going to spend the money that a family will spend. By bringing in the 80's or 70s bands the park gets a much nore diverse crowd"Families" and that is where the money will come from.
Remember Busch is not a nonprofit organization and they are going to do what's best for the bottom line.
Also for those STYX fans that want to hear Mr.Roboto you should have gone a few years ago to see Dennis Deyoung he played it its his song Styx does not play it live anylonger

So wait, you are telling me that basically the only strategy to book successful shows with people spending money to come are 80's and teeny bands?

Sorry... I find this way hard to believe.

There are well rounded bands out there that will draw huge crowds... who will spend money.

Now, I understand that the park wants to see this mega huge turn of profit off of each band they book... But at what point should offering a quality selection of music come after making the most offering a cookie cutter selection of 80's, pop and country bands that still end up alienating a huge chunk of a potential market?

Just about no matter what market they cater to, No matter who they book, the "free" concerts are still gonna make the park tons of money, because people will come just cause it's there. It's rather crappy of the park to only concern themselves with offering a one way or the other concert offering... It's just bad business if you ask me, Sure they make more money which is cool... But at what point should the experience suffer because they want to bank... Hopefully when the rest of the line-up for this year drops I'll find something that interest me, and others alike. I've got a very large musical taste... Not hard to please at all, But I want to see some variety from the park, that targets the widest demo possible.

There's always next year. That's what I have been saying to myself for the last 2 years. Though it is a nice bonus, concerts are not my focus for having tickets.

I really try to avoid the concert dates at the park anyways for my trip, because the park gets PACKED no matter who is performing. I also have one of the best concert venues (WOLF TRAP <3) literally a 15 minute drive from my house with great repeat visit artists, so really the only times I'll be coming back to BGW specifically for concerts are for artists that I like (like the Styx, Steve Miller, etc.).
