After a brisk initial bout of demolition, work seems to have slowed down a lot. I haven't seen much additional damage to the mountain or track removal since last weekend. Work is ongoing, but it looks gentle and targeted to me.

I recall the gentle demo of Shockwave till the park closed and then what happened durringvthe off season. Could be that they are just holding the big work till they have closed days.

Makes sense from a safety stand point. I think part of the slowdown could be they simply don't know what to do with the mountain. So they are starting with everything that isn't part of the mountain as it.

They most likely are clearing the back of the mountain first to create a working area to get closer to the mountain with a crane and other machinery.

Taking out the main curve at the back of the mountain allows the heavy equipment to get closer to the structure for the higher parts of the coaster to be removed.

I can understand holding off on the demo of the coaster that is over the mountain structure while the park is open to the public. Especially, on the side next to Avalanche (and to a lesser extent on the FOF side). KD has another 2-3 weeks of being closed Mon-Fri. I think starting the last Friday in April, the park is open Fri- Sun. So, the park will only have Mon-Thur to demo with the park closed.

Could be a clue as to the future of the mountain if the contractor brings a crane in to remove the upper sections of the coaster. Either KD is planning to hold on to the moucano by minimizing damage as the upper sections of the coaster track/supports come down or to keep from damaging other structures, especially Avalanche, as everything comes down.

I get the impression that KD doesn't know what it's going to do yet.

Sorry, but given how rapidly the demo of the ride is happening, I think they do know a lot more than they are letting on. Remember, just a couple weeks ago, the debate was whether the coaster demo would start during the fall, or even next year.

As I posted earlier this year, I still have a hunch that KD made the decision to close Volcano much earlier than February.

My argument against that is that unless it's a flat or off the shelf, its too soon after determining that it needed to be closed to have something designed already. My feeling right now is that they're going to clear as much as they can while deciding on what to replace it with.

And the argument against that is the Volcano is featured on this year's passes. I really don't think that if this way a decision made a while ago they would have done that.

I was just thinking of the ride demolition part. I just don't know what to think of at this point as to the replacement attraction(s).

I do find it strange concerning the "selective demo" going on with the main queue house. If the whole thing is coming down, why bother taking out a small wood based bridge with a saw. A bulldozer would be quicker.

I think that KD would want to keep the mountain and use it for a ride if possible. That would be why they are being careful about demoing now.

I think if anything the mountain would be reduced and used as a queue and not house the actual ride if it were to stay.

My original post stated that the park might have made the decision about Volcano as early as an August/September timeframe. The season passes for this year went on sale around the same time.

The passes would have already been ordered and at the park for sale. I doubt KD is going to throw out a whole supply of passes just because it has an image of a defunct ride on it.

Like having the mountain structure sink into the ground 50-60 feet? It would still be the mother of all queue lines. Come to KD and experience "Queue Line: The Everlasting Wait"!

For what it is worth, that design isn't new this year. I wouldn't be surprised if they are just using the existing stock, rather than throwing them away. Who knows if the people who handle ticket sales would even know about ride construction/destruction. I wouldn't, personally, do too much analysis based on this specific data point; I think it may be a red herring.
