This has become a very interesting conversation. One of the reasons I like posting here. There is more to discuss about this ride than KD's Flight of Fear. Lord knows that ride could use additional alien theme; but the park just isn't in the mood to do it. As for Verbolten, it remains a good classic for the park. Wish the building could be a little longer in theme; but the ride was already expensive enough. I just wish the themes were a little more intense. Especially when it comes to the Storm and Werewolf. It's just my imagination but I'd use more aggressive thunder cracks and probably a near miss from a falling tree when you whip through a turn. When it comes to the Werewolf, that deserves a true pitch black theme; with a couple a Werewolf encounters. The first should be placed on the floor, after you dip inside the building. The second encounter should be an aggressive werewolf animatronic that torments riders, before the drop.

Most of the Howloscream mazes I walked through last weekend had droves of young children waiting in line, and many more strolling through the park. Physically speaking, the ride is as intense as it will ever be, no? I think if a young park goer can handle a scare zone or haunted house than most would be able to handle even louder noises and near misses inside of an already intense coaster. The drop track scares me more than any scare house, and I’m a grown adult. I don’t understand the backlash to the mere mention of a “scarier” Black Forest. There are a number of lesser intense coasters for a young child to get their digs on. Verbolten also seems to always have the longest line in the park, so I doubt that even a failed “scary” retheme would dramatically impact ridership.

I agree about the werewolf themeing inside the show building. You’d think it’d be more complicated narrative-wise to have three ride stories versus having a single one. Having the inside be solely themed to a wolf (a big bad one perhaps?) would be an awesome homage and make for a more cohesive experience in the building.

Finally, someone agrees.

Here's how I would do it. All three themes in one. The spirit theme would more incorporated with the lore of the ride. What would make sense is if the lore spoke of a route in the Black Forest that people don't usually take. Locals warn tourist to stay away from it, but as usual there are always the few that don't listen.

[Stage 1]
As soon as you approach the event building, you hear an evil laugh spirit laugh and your thrusted into the Black Forest. The launch tunnel incorporates a loud "Thunder Crack". As soon as you reach the top of the first launch, you'll hear a loud howl. Right when you take the first dip towards the floor; you can see a Werewolf standing there. As you avoid near misses from falling trees; the Werewolf's bark can be heard from numerous speakers that are placed inside the falling tree along with blowers that create artificial wind for the storm theme.

[Stage 2]
Once you reach the first break platform, the evil spirit speaks the words "You will never escape the Black Forest". Another loud crack of thunder echoes in the event building, before the train leaves the break platform and heads towards the drop track.

[Stage 3]
As the train approaches the drop track, SFX of the car stalling play as the train slowly creeps into a thick tree surrounding. The Werewolf animatronic activates and it begins to torment riders as it snarls and barks. Riders feel uncomfortable waiting for the train to do something. Fake smoke surrounds the train to indicate that this car is going no where. As the cage flies open, the track drops saving riders from the Werewolf.

[Stage 4]
SFX of the car engine starting play shortly, before the train begins moving. Werewolf SFX activate and you hear a shrill howl before the train dips down and launches riders to safety.

Honestly the existing overlays are cool enough and do a good job of fitting the theming and being visually interesting if not photo realistic. With the existing upkeep issues the park has with even keeping the wolf eyes lit, I would hate to see them try to build or even maintain animatronics.

Also maybe it's just me but I find it funny seeing people referring to VB as a BGW classic.

I really like these! Especially the drop track bit.

I’d personally love to see them just fix the tree lighting/near misses throughout the ride. If they were going to add anything I think it would need to be easily maintainable; new sounds on the first launch and on the drop track would be nice. Maybe more intense cracks of lightning with some strobe lights. I really don’t mind the majority of the indoor helixes being completely dark. On the drop track fix all the old branch lights and update the sound effects. I liked your idea of the car stalling sound with some more intense wolf growls. I think they should abandon the spirit woman and solely do the wolf, could be a big inanimate wolf head with a strobe light for a front-seat only scare. Fix the roof of the bridge.

And buy new cabinet knobs for the queue office building! (I often wonder if any employee would mind me screwing in some freshly bought Lowe’s knobs, with some gorilla glue on the threads). If they charge a vandalizing guest $100 per Lowe’s knob replacement, call it a profitable investment. I’d also take a duster and remove the disgusting cobwebs in the queue buildings. Fake cobwebs yes, real cobwebs no.

Covering up the LSM whine/squeal with sound effects is always a good idea. Combining this retheme with my idea of making the cars swing like Snow White (the mechanism unlocking after the drop track and locking at the station) would turn the ride from an insult to the Wolf's memory to a worthy heir of its legacy. We just need DarKastle's spot filled with a new 42" minimum mild/medium intensity ride to fill the remaining gap.

Yup.

The intense wolf theme, is more of a tribute to Big Bad Wolf. I'm surprised the park didn't think of this first. As for the Spirit theme; it's not totally forgotten. Like I said; it's attributed to the lore of the ride. Evil Spirits haunt a certain section of the Black Forest and locals tell tourist not to go there. So basically the ride takes place in a detoured route of the Black Forest. The queue area would begin to unfold the theme shortly after the greeting area. Not sure how they would explain this lore, though. The lab section of the queue is really small. Would be nice if it were bigger so more of the lore could be told. How do you thi k the upgrade would cost? Animatronic, new SFX, strobe lighting.

With the post I will attach this testimony of a bicycle rider's experience of the Black Forest.

I'm guessing that while they kept BBW tributes via the Wolf Xing license plate and the wolf sequence in the show building, they probably didn't want to overdo it as they were attempting for a brand new experience and likely didn't want to draw too much comparison.

But since it's been a decade, they probably could make some of the changes you're suggesting as a new take on nostalgia for BBW while also simplifying the theming elements and requirements to refurbish the show building scenery. However, that might be seen as chasing bad money with more money.

I have to question the accuracy of this testimony.

First of all, if it was correct, then that guy would be pretty stupid for making it onto an Autobahn with a bicycle. There are several warnings before you hit the Autobahn that the street is only for motorized vehicles and the ramps are quite distinct.
If nothing else the cars coming at you at 110+ mph would give it away.

Then, there is a 8 hour bicycle ride from Frankfurt to get to the outskirts of the Black Forrest.

And then there is the fact that the creature he describes doesn't exist...

Having ridden my bicycle through the Black Forest several times though, I can attest that it is a beautiful area to ride a bike in, if you can handle hills.

Here's how I feel it should be done. Let's consider a few things. Next level theme could potentially change the mood of the ride. Right now, it is considered a family thrill. Intense SFX and spooky lightning could in turn make it a full on thrill ride. What if the ride had a mellow Day Time experience from park opening to mid-evening. At round 5pm or 6pm, the ride transitions to a full on spooky Black Forest lore. Meaning the more intense SFX and lighting is activated. So from the hours of 6:30pm to closing, the ride's computer activates the night theme and Verbolten's station is dimly lit with the Spirit Lady Voice talking to riders in the queue. Here's how I would do it by stages.

[Stage 1 Night Theme]
The queue area lights are dim after 7:30pm. A queue line spiel plays warning riders that all Black Forest tours are done for the evening. Any entry into the Black Forest is independent from the tour company and at your own risk. Inside the small lab, a more scarier video would be playing. The video would be testimonies from local residents who speak about a particular route in the Black Forest that everyone avoids. Further inquiry from the journalist, only leads to a tight lip mentality from the people being interviewed. They will speak nothing of the truth from what they have experience on this particular route.

[Stage 2 Night Theme]
The station is where it begins to come to life. The German Lady has gone home for the evening. The station P/A system is picking up some sort of weird transmission. It sounds a bit like a distress broadcast, but it's hard to make out. Eventually it becomes clear as the station lights dimmer on and off that some sort of ominous presence is near. Guest are entertained by the Spirit Lady that speaks about your self guided tour into the Black Forest. She does not make it know that she is a spirit; but more of a long time resident of the area. Each train dispatch is accompanied by "The main route is closed for the evening. Please use the detour. And drive safely.

[Stage 3 Night Theme]
The train leave the station and approaches the S-turn. In the trees near the turn, you can hear the spirit laughter. After the train exits the S-turn and faces the tunnel, Engine Rev SFX play, as the train hits the LSM. Fully, engulfed inside the dark tunnel; a loud Thunder Crack SFX strobe's the tunnel for a few seconds. The Dip-Turn to the bottom floor is now features Car Sparks from damage that the car has sustained from a rough entry into the detour route. The Standing Werewolf and Near Miss Falling Tree scare riders through the first helix turns.

[Stage 4 Night Theme]
The first Break platform features Radio Distress and Loud Thunder Crack that fills the event building. The storm intensifies before approaching the Drop platform. Car Stalling SFX play as the building goes completely dark inside the dense tree setting. Car Engine Turns Off SFX as train stops on drop platform. WereWolf Animatronic activates before track drops.

[Stage 5 Night Theme]
Car Engine Start SFX plays before a Shrill WereWolf Howl SFX plays and train hits LSM. After the train makes it back to the break station. The Spirit Lady will tell riders "I hope you enjoyed your night tour of the Black Forest. But return; and the next encounter will not be so lucky."

Really neat idea! If I was redoing the ride, I would absolutely try something like this! Unfortunately, the park will most likely never do something like this, but I CAN DREAM HAROLD! One potential problem I see is if the spiel at 7:30 says the word "closed," most of the GP wouldn't understand and probably complain that the ride closed early, but that is just a matter of how the spiel is phrased.

The Hagrid drop is super-mild. No discomfort. No real forces, either.

Edit: it feels more like being lowered than dropped.

A "near miss" would be a bad idea. Someone would be injured. A "near hit" on the other hand would just scare people but not injure anyone. 😆
