RE: Verbolten

Big Bad Wolf had a 42" height requirement. My son rode it when he was 3. It wasn't exactly the most intense coaster in the park. Verbolten was intended to be its replacement to appeal to the same type of audience, a medium coaster or introductory type of coaster. It might not thrill you, but it probably thrills all the children who can not ride the big coasters yet. Considering the only other coaster options for these riders are Grover or Loch Ness Monster (whose loops may scare some off), I think it will fit perfectly for what the park was trying to accomplish. I haven't ridden yet (I was planning to go last Friday, but my tire blew out on the interstate, yay!), so I will save any comments about the ride experience until then, but you don't know rough unless you rode Drachen Fire. That was rough, but I still loved to ride it.

RE: Verbolten

Was lucky enough to get a last minute invite to Media Day yesterday. After 15 rides on Verbolten, my last one with Larry Giles and Carl Lum I can honestly say, BGW has a winner on their hands. It will be a great family coaster at one of the best amusement parks for families in the country (if not the world).

They were only running two trains yesterday, the red train which was loaded with all the gear and the green train, which they eventually ran empty (not sure why, they said it was to keep the red train filled.) The first time I rode, was definitely the best, but because each ride is different, I didn't get bored. Things I liked, the first launch and helix in the event building. The free fall drop and the drop over the Rhine. The theming inside the event building is well done and unique. The fact that there are three different themes is cool as well. So while you may get the wolves four times in a row like I did, you also might get something different each time you ride. The queue, as others have said, is also very well done so when the lines are very long and moving slow, you will have plenty to look at.

Things I didn't like, there are two times in the event building were you are stopped in complete darkness for what seems too long. I suppose one of these stops is to set up loading into the free fall drop. The bridge doesn't look old and ricketedy when you up there and it was difficult to hear the sound effects of the creaking bridge up there. The head rests of the seats have no padding, so it hurts when your head slams into the head rests after the launches and can be headache inducing.

Other than that, its a great ride. Families will love it (although it may be too intense for younger kids) and I am sure there will be some long lines this summer. However, if you a looking for extreme thrill coaster this is not your ride.

On a side note, I talked with a BGW official who indicated they can change the themes in the event building relatively easily. So for Howl-O-Scream there will be a different theme. That is definitely a cool feature of this coaster.

I think this is a really interesting side note. I imagine that also means they could switch out the themeing for other reasons, if the current three stories get stale and they just want to freshen up the ride. This is really good news.

Is verbolten really worth waiting in the long lines this weekend? Or should I hold off a bit untill things cool down?

It's always dangerous to answer such a subjective opinion for someone else, but for me, I'd say it is worth the wait to go ahead and start riding now. I don't regret one minute of my hour+ wait and if I hadn't gotten to ride last Saturday I would probably be queueing up this weekend -- and I may do it anyway!

But obviously only you can decide for yourself. I found the time in the line went fast, everyone was chatting amongst themselves, with those who had already ridden sharing their impressions, and the staff were all enthusiastic and happy -- all in all it was fun to be part of the excitement of being among the first riders. As always YMMV.

RE: Verbolten

So I know the basic theming elements in the building, but no one has gone in depth to what exactly is in it and what it looks like. For instance, the "moonbox" and the black light paintings. Can someone explain in detail what all is in it and what it looks like because I feel that the POVs don't do it justice

RE: Verbolten

The POV's do NOT do it justice in the slightest; it only shows ~50% of what is inside. The theming is rather vibrant if you will of various versions of foliage one would cross in a forest. You pass through trees that wrap clear around the track and twist through trees. At the top of the helix prior to the building MBR if you look down to your left there is a Huge moon at angle on the bottom that spins around with branches on it. Post MBR you look off to your left and over half of the building is viewable (rather large) and your are viewing the forest itself and most of the building in its entirety. The well planned aspect of that scene is zero track is visible as the theming was planned to hide the tracks and better the illusion of being inside the forest. Sound FX roar throughout the building. www.bgwfans.com and read the soft opening article with my review.

RE: Verbolten

I noticed that when watching the POV's, a lot of the themeing from the entrance to the drop track doesn't show up either because the ride is going too fast or the cameras can't catch them. Really all I've seen on the inside of the building from the POVs is the flashes of lightning in the entrance of the building and sometimes the eyes of the wolves before the track drops.

Can I hope for a lit POV where we get to see where all the themeing elements are or is that going to wait until a private event happens?

RE: Verbolten

Anybody have any specific questions for the VIP thing tonight? I have no clue what to expect in terms of who will be there, how many guests or what kind of access I'll have, but if I can ask any reasonable questions of any of the higher ups, I'll do my best. Also, follow the hashtag #Verbolten between 5:30 and 9:30 for updates from the attendees.

Part of the issue with the lack of full scale visuals of the themeing in the event building is due to the high range of exposure difference between the out side of the park, the lights inside the building and lastly ride time spent in the building. Most consumer video cameras being use will require anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes to auto adjust the gain to allow for the darker environment. Flashing lights further lengthen and mess up exposure. To get a full inside view using a camera, one would have to make adjustments that will blow out the exterior video in order to optimize gain for the interior.

I'll be wearing a VT Engineering t-shirt if anyone wants to say hi at the event tonight :) And I'd be glad to capture any photo or ask any questions anyone has!

RE: Verbolten

Yayyy I got to have my first ride! And I must say the themeing is unbelieveable. The timing on when they flash and when lights fade on and off is just perfect. So here's my 2 cents on the latest points of ingress on Verbolten. :D

Intensity- I consider the launchs to be semi-intense, to me it felt like the second launch is faster, but no kingda ka here..obviously.
Vertical drop- Very uniqe experience, I really enjoyed that about the ride, the anticipation right before it drops really gets your heart pumping.
Themeing- 10 out of 10, just amazing inside the event building. It is just tripppppppyyyyyy, like I just dropped a hit of acid or something. The drapes are stunning, the only way you dont enjoy the inside of the building is if your blind.
Roughness- Ok guys im going to have to bring some negativity to this part. This is not just in your head, this ride, especially sence its so new, has a serious vibrating problem. And I'm not talking about going through turns, its most noticable on that slow little segment right before the first launch, I was talking to a maintenance worker, and he said vibration is already becoming a daily struggle. Everyday the bolts have to be retighten on that little silver plate that locks down infront on your feet on the bottom of the restraints on every car. And something very noticeable that he pointed out, if your look at the very first row of seats and look at the bottom cornor where the first section of the train with the headlights meet the bottom platform where your feet go, you'll see what appears to be some white powder, witch he said is the fiberglass of the train slowly cracking due to the vibration, look for yourself.

All in all I absolutely love Verbolten, but I do find I have to force myself to accept that this is just a family coaster, and it may be years before my beloved park gets a new adrenaline blaster.
