The coaster wars of the 90's have been long gone. No park puts in coasters every year like they used to. It's pretty unfair to compare the two park owners. Thanks for the Dorney info. I guess that answers the question of KD's importance level compared to Dorney's. the day that KD only gets a tiny flat over a three year period will be the end of days.

I made no mention of KD being involved with any coaster wars and as far as parks putting coasters in every year, I never said anything about that either. I was just pointing out the long gap between the addition of I-305 and the present day. Some of the coasters Paramount installed (Hurler, Hypersonic, Ricochet and Italian Job/Backlot) weren't really anything of scale that contributed to the coaster wars, which were mostly centered around B&M installations. The only attempt they made was adding Volcano to go against Alpengeist.

Dorney also sits in a much smaller immediate market than KD (Allentown vs Richmond) and gets stiffer competition from Hersheypark, Great Adventure and Knoebels, as opposed to KD with BGW and SFA. Dorney getting a tiny flat over a 3-year period is the norm.

What confuses me about this announcement is that it is on a Saturday. From a marketing perspective, you usually don't do major announcements over the weekend because the local media doesn't report on it nearly as much. Now that I think of it, I can't recall a Cedar Fair major announcement ever being on a weekend.

I hope I'm wrong, but with the announcement being on a Saturday my hopes aren't high. However, that could be the chain-wide release date of 2017 season passes so maybe that's why they're announcing it that day.

Regardless of what happens next season, Drop Tower needs painted ASAP.

Not saying it's related, but....

While it's completely possible this is for the new Blackout maze, a user on Instagram noticed survey markings spray-painted on the ground around Hurler. Just throwing that out there.

I posted this on Instagram this morning when got to the park.  It is not a survey marker.  It's from someone spray painting in that area.  Once you see it in person it's plain as day.

White construction markings usually indicate proposed excavation. That being said, it could be for something totally different.

That would be great if there also wasn't blue paint that is over spray from them painting something with a straight edge.

Does anybody have any clue what kind of price range the RMC renovations fall under? An RMC transformation of Hurler is certainly not high on my list of expectations for 2017, but the cost could help indicate to us the likelihood of such a project at any Cedar Fair park in the future. I don't have any clue of what kind of price tag an RMC transformation would carry.

http://www.hanovercounty.gov/BI/Recap_of_Building_Permits_Issued_June.pdf  page 5 and 6th line from the bottom. KD has filed for a building permit for a new misc. commercial structure to cost around $35,000. this was filed in June. could this have to do with 2017, a new haunt attraction or just general improvements? this was posted on the county's website on 7/8/16

Twisted Colossus cost $7 million.

New Texas Giant cost $10 million.

That seems like a bargain for a conversion. Twisted Colossus (I think) looks like one of the coolest coasters.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Twisted Colossus (AKA My Precious) done at cost with no profit to RMC?

That's why RMC has been able to get a lot of business. A lot of the construction costs for a new roller coaster lies within the clearing of the actual space, infrastructure, and the supports. With RMC doing a conversion, that eliminates a ton of the work and material needed. So the park is pretty much paying mostly for new track, new trains and new control systems.

You're right. The $7 million is the cost of the original Colossus.

I can't find any figures on Joker or Iron Rattler but Storm Chaser at Kentucky Kingdom cost $15 million and a brand new Outlaw Run at SDC cost $10 million.

A lot of rumors on Screamscape.com this week about Kings Dominion.... Everything from an annual Winterfest event starting in 2017 to an Apple Turnover style ride returning. Nothing about a new coaster though....
