I noticed this pretty much immediately when I rode it for the first time this year but the new Nessie trains sit higher up than their old counterparts. The old trains felt like you were sitting in a bucket whereas the new trains are seated a good 3 inches higher. They're a lot easier to get into and out of but that change in height definitely affected how some turns are handled for me, especially the turnaround over Kiddieland in the front row.

Rode her today. Everything was working. Train 1 FYI. It was like a nexus of perfection. My OTSR was nice and loose, the drop had that great classic raw, "Nessieness," it was screaming fast and trim free! I felt something I have not felt in years. She was ACCELERATING coming through the tunnel. You could REALLY feel it coming out. There was just enough shake to feel right but not too much to crack your back.

This was the ride. I can't explain it right. But this was the ride that I have romanticized in my memory from the early 80s. She felt spry and healthy. Even the lift felt energetic. Whatever they did, BRAV-FUCKING-O!

What is my favorite ride. Nessie, always was, still is.

Im glad that they seemed to do something right by her. Its a shame when something loses what you loved about it. I cant wait to try this ride again.

How do the S&S cars compare to the prior ones? And are they really new cars or only refurbs?

I've read new S&S cars a few times, yet the park only says "Refurbished train cars and a paint job."

thx

I have mixed feelings. I tripped trying to get out the other day, and I never did that before. That could be 3 things, (in most to least likely order INHO)
  1. I'm old and round and not as spry as I once was
  2. The chair to side ratio is significantly different and my muscle memory is still on the old cars
  3. The design is dumb and trips people.

I think that the headrest and supports on either side of my head are different. I never bumped/bounced my head on the old cars, but I find it happening more frequently with the new ones. The over the should restraint doesn't seem to lift as high and therefore getting in and out of the cars is more awkward.

My Take. Ear bashing on the new shoulder restraints makes the new cars very uncomfortable for me. Sitting in the second seat of any car now has blocked visibility due to the higher seat backs. Getting out now requires an awkward 90 degree turn of your foot from your body and the way needed to step out. It seems between the wheel-well and seat size, that space is smaller or just no longer friendly. I also have a tall friend that must now sit crossed leg in the front seat that was not necessary in the old cars. I really want to love the change, but just can't get there. Go sit in the old car at the front gate by the tram dropoff, if it is still there.

Just turn your ankles into Gumby joints like I have and it's not problem.

That was actually my experience with the prior cars...that and I always felt like my arm on the outside side of the car was constrained--not much room to move between the restraints and the car body. I had just attributed it to getting older and mostly bigger from when I first rode Nessie as a kid...but I'm really not that big of of a guy though, width or height... I'll need to check them out and hope for a different experience than yours.

My arms no longer feel constrained, but the thrashing is much greater since there is more body space. The older trains braced me better for the transitions.

I would love to check back and see if Zimmy's experience without trims was a happy fluke. It's interesting to me how different the sensations are in the first loop each time I ride. That, unfortunately, has become one of my most dreaded parts of the ride. Sometimes the loop can be very smooth, but at other times that part nearly causes whiplash if I am expecting different forces.

Well spotted!

We checked RCDB, and either Black Widow or Double Loop was the first coaster with two loops. Black Widow technically has one loop, but the train goes through it twice. Double Loop has two consecutive loops.

We will issue a correction.

Regardless, BGW's claim is incorrect: Nessie is not the first "double looping" coaster. They should have specified "interlocking."

Some quick shots I did to compare. Maybe some locals can get better comparison shots?

BTW, would love to see this subbery returned to Nessie status. Most of the shape is still there and how hard could it be?
