Early reports claimed that one train gave a smoother ride than the other. Is this still true, and is there a way to tell them apart?
The screen in the back of the station will tell you which train is currently loading/unloading.
Any difference between the trains is almost certainly a result of differing levels of wear and tear on the wheels of a specific car. The likelihood that people's observations before are relevant now is nearly zero.
If you do some experimention, do report back though!

I couldn't tell a difference when riding in the same row over multiple days and differing weekends and weather. Am sure others may offer differing opinions however we could not tell the difference in the two. With exception to the screen telling us which train we were boarding, we were able to tell them apart based on number and location of chips in the fresh paint. Whether that borders on obsessive or just being observant I will let you decide.

I first rode the Wednesday of the birthday festivities, second dispatch after the ACE members. I did notice negligible differences but nothing that jumped out at me, even being aware of such and trying to feel for the differences. Will be interesting to see if there are any changes when back in October.

No, it is not asking too much. BGW constantly "wastes" money and time on doing these frivolous additions or “enhancements”. That extra effort, time, and money could have been put toward ANY other areas needing repair. Or, enhancements that actually fit the theme. The time it took them to do this could have easily been toward the sounds Zachary suggested. Instead of a value added investment, it was wasted on a temporary flash-in-the-pan-for-today that amounted to nothing.
Not sure I noticed anything different with the music at Nessie, but I can say with certainty that the trains seemed to ride almost exactly the same this year as last. They look slightly different but the rest seems the same.

Having ridden the new trains for the first time last week, I liked the ride better than the old trains. It felt a little smoother and more comfortable (less jerky) while still feeling like Nessie.
I rode it recently and it was more comfortable and a bit smoother and the special effects in the cave added at lot in person than on video. Hopefully our good old Nessie is gonna be here for a long time.
Not sure if this has ever been posted before, but I was poking around the park's archives and found the official press release for Loch Ness Monster's opening. It has some fascinating commentary by the one of the park's original general managers, as well as some rarely-seen statistics about the ride.
Had a great day today riding this legendary coaster with my Grandson. Three generations of our family have now ridden Nessie. I was fortunate to ride her on opening day 40 years ago on my first date with my (now) wife. I'm not sure if I'll be up to riding her on her 50th birthday but my Grandson thinks it'll be an achievable goal.
