They could totally make that tunnel awesome. But they wont. Rip out the interior wall and put a roof over the center portion. Paint the floor white and hang a projector from the ceiling that projects a giant maelstrom onto the floor for everybody to see. It would feel like you are being sucked down into Nessie's lair!

Rode LNM today toward the back. It ran pretty well.

Last week was a different story though. It was crazy rough and my head pretty much bounced everywhere all over the ride. Maybe its because I rode in the middle row that day but it was terrible.

Tried riding last Monday but the ride broke down on the lift as I was getting in line.

- I watched the queue video today. Turns out it was updated along with Apollo's so the stats screen is gone. The ops are still wearing the old uniforms in the videos so it was probably made a few years ago. That means Alpengeist is the only ride in the park to have its original queue video still intact. Leiderhosen and all.

When Nic and I went the guys working on Nessie were by far the most approachable. They really liked it when Nic's husband starting asking them engineering questions and when I asked about her personality.

The guy at Alpie clearly did not want us there.

Hm. I was giving this some thought. Personally, I wouldn't mind if they did some renovations on her (spruce up the tunnel section, new trains, etc.) but I'm also perfectly happy if she stays just the way she is.

Correct me if I am wrong....but, didn't the tunnel light up? I could have swore that there is a a painting of "Nessie" on the inside wall of the tunnel...I also, thought that there were effects like fog and lights...did I dream this? Anyways, I personally wish that they would do something to the ride's tunnel

^ You didn't dream it up. I am almost sure there was once fog in the tunnel, and there used to be a plywood Nessie head that was at the end (?) of the tunnel. There were/are also some sort of strobe lights that were difficult to see in later years.

I think it would be great to simply fill the lair with dense fog, mist and some sort of subaquatic Nessie sounds. But there's no clearance to actually put any objects in that tunnel, at least as I remember it.

There was fog, strobes, and a cutout at one point, but the fog was screwing with the electrical stuff inside, so it was removed. I don't remember seeing it in the early 2000s so it was probably removed sometime before then.

I've seen one strobe light the last few times I rode Nessie. With technology these days it seems like they should be able to install some waterproof electronics and still have fog.

Even waterproofing the electronics will not allow them to operate trouble free forever. The second anything breaks the seal the 'weatherproof' label on them goes to naught, and the water will eventually find its way in regardless.

^ I wonder what electronics are in the "lair" tunnel? It's not brakes, is it? Or sensors? The coaster is moving by momentum at that point in the course, right?

They are but they don't last forever. The weather will eventually take its toll on pretty much everything that isn't hidden inside a controlled climate building. Inside the tunnel the electronics for the strobes and other effects could last longer than on the outside but if fog is added it pretty much puts a quicker expiration date on anything.

Weatherproofing is a great thing but it doesn't guarantee it will last to its intended time, especially in an ènvironment with lots of motion and exposure to the elements 24/7.

If there was fog in the past, I bet it was water vapor and not fog machine fluid (mineral oil, glycol, &c). I could see how coating the track with aerosolized lubricants would could be a bad idea, plus it would cost a lot to keep a non-water vapor fog machine going all the time. But I still can't imagine that there are any significant ride electronics on that stretch of track.

Hey, Evan is taking the Insider Coaster Tour next week. Maybe he could ask the Nessie crew about fog/effects/ride mechanisms in the lair? Or take some high-res pictures of all those schematics on the wall in the maintenance room...
