I'm almost positive that it's just not turned on some days. Nothing actually wrong with it, just not turned on.
There's some guy from maintenance who has to come in and turn it on every morning. Maybe he called out :-/

He calls out a lot then. If it's not the Crypt, then it's Backlot. Or it's switched. Sometimes, both.

Backlot's fire was working yesterday I'm pretty sure.

It's worth noting that a huge amount of the ride's theme is killed by the annoying "Fun TV" music videos blaring through the queue line. I don't quite understand the point of those anyway.

In all fairness the ride doesn't have much theme in the queue anyways. At least you're kept entertained by the TVs

Meh, you can't hear the creepy music anymore. :p

Seriously, though, perhaps I should elaborate. If they're going to use the new television displays, I'd rather them advertise in-park promotions or do more park-related games like the Singing Mushroom Shuffle. Or film a bunch of low-budget pre-shows for some of the park's more heavily themed rides. I realize the music videos are supposed to be entertaining, but I hope they eventually use the monitor more effectively.

How about some official Tomb Raider: Firefall desktop backgrounds?

I found these using the Internet Wayback Machine to visit the 2005 version of Paramount's Kings Dominion's website. Enjoy!

It's always great to see the excellent special effects on The Crypt working. They really transform a somewhat standard flat ride into what is easily one of the best-themed rides in the state, and give it great visual appeal for non-riders. In 2015, the effects were used very sparsely (I only recall the fire working once or twice last year), so hopefully the effects will be used more this season.

It's really not the same without the effects, especially the fire. My favorite effect, though, is the soundtrack: the intense music mixed with the creaky noises of an ancient-sounding machine certainly increase the tension. I was so happy to hear the soundtrack return on Preview Day.

Thanks for sharing, Swerve!

Yes! The gandala looked rather amazing sweeping threw that dark fog followed by blasts of fire. The soundtrack only made it that much better. Also I noticed the line for the Crypt( for a Tuesday especially) was clearly much longer with the effects than without. I waited 4 ride rotations. Amazing what a little love can do to an audience.

The Crypt's effects have been experiencing issues for the past few weeks. I did notice them testing the fire and music before the ride opened, but then both effects were shut off once riders boarded.

I can understand why the fire isn't running before the summer season (it's extremely expensive), but it bothers me when the music doesn't play. The score really brings a whole other level of excitement to the ride.

Does it seem to anyone else that KD tends to focus on one or two things at a time? Perhaps they don't have the resources to do more?

Fire, water and music all were working when we were there at the end of March. It definitely does add to the effects. Never have ridden it as I'm not a fan of flipping like that, but I may try it once.
