RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

I understand that it isn't Neg Rep.  I'm concerned about the comments that may support the Neutral Rep.

Understandable. We'll see how it goes.

For the record, this was PR's idea- I point this out because he has been at the receiving end of a fair bit of negativity in the past- he said he thought it would be a helpful change (and actually provided some great reasoning as to why as well). Figured I'd give it a shot. If anyone sees anything concerning, let me know and we'll reevaluate from there.

Nic, the admins and mods can edit or remove any neutral rep if necessary. I don't see any problems occurring there. I actually like this idea a lot, it will be very useful for constructive criticism or pointers as to how a user can better themselves.

Hypothetically...Somebody's idea that could make me a better forum member, could very easily be interpreted as, just somebody wanting me to be 'more to their liking'. Or more like them. Just sayin.

Edit. I also should throw in there that I wont be dishing out any pointers.

RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

Alpen, this is not about saying positive or negative things. Constructive criticism is not always positive. In fact it can be very negative, but at least it helps to make things better.

Mazakman, I understand your concern and I believe that give the perfect opportunity for everyone to really try to understand the purpose and meaning behind reputation. I believe reputation gives a false sense of power to some members who seem to think the higher reputation, the more powerful they are.

Just as an example, when my reputation was lowered below another members, that other member publicly made it know that they felt more powerful than myself. This is something that is ridiculous. I honestly would just rather remove the number system altogether and just have an open spot for people to say, "Hey man you are an amazing poster!" or "Hey, that one post had lots of grammar mistakes, you might want to take a minute to review your posts for errors first."

The idea I have is turning Reputation into Member Feedback. I do realize that some people might try to leave comments that will try to change someone to their liking, but that is where the community comes in to play. If you are getting positive feedback from 10 people who are telling you that you have great well written posts, and one person saying your posts are not adding to the discussion, clearly that one person is trying to change you to their liking or they are trying to mess you up. In that case, I would just say ignore it. No one is obligated to take anything to heart when it comes to these things.

I truly feel like this is an opportunity to improve upon ourselves. I don't want people to think of me negatively, and I want people to tell me if they think of me negatively. I want people to tell me when I am doing things that might personally offend others. That way I can improve and become a better poster. If someone says I have terrible grammar, I'm going to start double checking my posts before posting.

I know I use terrible grammar as an example throughout this post, but this can apply to many things. Just to list a few they can be things like, being too sarcastic, being too mean/rude, instantly killing discussions, making non-obvious personal attacks, turning simple heated discussions into flame wars, posting randomly without ever adding to the discussion. Alpenghost is of course excused from most of this :p but these are issues that we as members can solve.

Something that I believe Zachary said was they don't know how to moderate the forums. Bill sounds like a record every time he goes on his if nobody reports it, I don't know spiel. This is a way where we can moderate ourselves without constantly bugging moderators to intervene. Instead of instantly reporting someone, and they possibly get in trouble or face unnecessary consequences you can give them some tips or advice on how to not get in trouble.

Like wise, instead of 'Thanking' a post you can leave comment abut how awesome you think that post is. Personally, I would love it if we can change the word, 'Thanks' to 'Like' as I feel that is what it's really used for anyways.

Well, It sounds like your intentions are to create one big happy family PR and there is nothing wrong with that. I support Zachary's decision to 'give it a try'. I'm new to this forum and have never been one to step on anybody's toes. I am also much older than a lot of peeps frequenting this forum which puts me a little out of place. I'm here to learn about BGW as a 1st year passmember. And I will do it respectfully with or without a 'reputation'. (in as few words as possible :))

Donor beta is now live on the Donors Only board!

Additionally, as I was fixing a pesky attachment inserting bug with the new editor, I realized I could make another small change that would make lives a whole lot easier. Attachment IDs are now shown next to the attachment size so it's now much easier to see which images have been inserted into posts and which haven't yet been.

OK. I have finally gotten a chance to see the slick new look on my laptop vs. a phone; I like it. Haven't experienced any problems yet. ;)
