RE: Shockwave to Close Forever on August 9th

Sadly for Shockwave, it isn't even the worst, in my opinion.  Mantis for me was a much more painful and unpleasant stand-up.  Shockwave was just generically bad.

Mantis was the biggest mistake in B&Ms history and made Shockwave feel like a kiddie coaster.

Does anyone know where the associates will be tomorrow for getting on the last train of Shockwave? KD posted something about finding an associate tomorrow to secure a spot on one of the last trains.

So who's going today to take the last stand on Shockwave? I'll be there if anyone wants to say hi.

However, I was lucky enough to secure a lanyard for a spot on the last ride ever on Shockwave!

RE: Shockwave to Close Forever on August 9th

While Shockwave was not my favorite ride, and it could be said that it had run its course, I always enjoyed riding it and I will miss getting to experience it alongside my family and friends. I may be alone in this, but Shockwave, I will miss you.

Yesterday, while bittersweet in the end, was also a ton of fun. The coolest part was when Kings Dominion's PR manager, Katelyn, asked me to do an interview for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Sure enough, what I said made the paper- I'm famous!

Richmond Times-Dispatch said:
Joe [...] said he arrived at Kings Dominion a half-hour early and sprinted through the park to make sure he got one. The self-described coaster enthusiast said the Shockwave was not his favorite ride, but it was always fun.

“I’m sad to see it go, but I’m excited to see what will come after it,” he said.

Here are some pictures of Shockwave in its final days.

Shockwave was not everybody's cup of tea, but having grown up seeing that iconic loop in the middle of Kings Dominion's midway my entire life, and having fond memories of riding this unique coaster with family and friends, it is sad to see this piece of history go.

However, now that Shockwave has rolled into history, it is time to look forward to the future. "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow."

The local newspaper in Richmond interviewed Pat Jones, Kings Dominion's general manager, concerning Shockwave's departure. She stated that the park has received a couple offers to buy the ride; plus, the coaster museum wanted a ride part or car for its collection.

I would think that if somebody wanted to buy the ride and the purchase amount is greater than the scrap value of the ride's steel, that the park would sell it. I don't know what the original cost of the ride was when it was installed for the 1986 season. My guess is in the 10-12 million dollar range (in 1986 dollars).

Say, if someone buys it for 2 million; Kings Dominion pays the cost of dismantling the ride (which they would have to do anyway if they were to just scrap it). Which, if the person who reported the Hanover County permit for KD on another web site is correct, is $500,000. The new owner is then responsible for shipping the ride to their park; site prep; and then construction. The new owners are getting a coaster for 1/2 or less of the original cost of the coaster.

For Kings Dominion, the sale of the ride pays for its dismantling and gives them a million plus dollars to maybe put toward 2016.
