I have a strong suspicion that time-range is going to be changed. It's like bottleneck speed they are working at. I mean I feel like 50% of the ride could be built by next week. It perplexes me that they'd have an announcement late like that when it will already be clearly in the air.
Velocicoaster wasn’t formally announced until it was nearly fully built, and Hollywood Drift hasn’t been formally announced yet despite lots of progress being made on it

I think it’ll depend on the construction of the tower. If they move quickly with it, I could see this thing being announced sooner than we think

To be fair, the people who are following the project closely enough to know the track is almost complete probably already know what the ride is. The announcement, for people like us, is more for name/theme/etc than the coaster.

For anyone who isn't following the project closely, they just see a giant structure going up and think "oh that must be the new ride for next year" and the actual announcement will make just as much a splash with them either way.

Was this supposed to operate along Ka?
Publicly, Ryan E has said several times the new coaster is not a Ka replacement. Practically, it is since it's so similar in operation and tower height, with this one being theoretically far more reliable and less maintenance-intensive long-term.

The new coaster was supposed to open this year. And Ka was supposed to close this year. The new kid was being built to exist alongside Ka for at least a short time. Then sh*t hit the fan with various things and Ka closed a full year early and the new coaster was delayed a full year. The fact that the new coaster isn't using any of Ka's footprint, except for maybe a few feet on one of the outer major footers, allowed for both to co-exist however long GAdv management and/or corporate wanted.

This alternative timeline is difficult to imagine. It would be interesting how they would dismantle Ka being so close to new coaster. I wonder if public opinion in coaster community would have been better having phantom spire built first. I previously speculated that this was that giga coaster meant to complement KA, not necessary the replacement. But it does seem strange to build a 400 ft strata next to KA like almost too good to be true. It would make sense for KA be dismantled a year later in this timeline. Regardless of what would happen, having a shorter coaster to succeed Ka would be seen negatively by coaster fans. But with falcons flight, it never really would have mattered and we still don’t know height, with 450 ft crane it could technically be taller than dragster to be tallest in North America.

I don’t think this new coaster is going to be anywhere in the 400 range. Just seeing these photos make me believe it’s around 300-350 feet. I was suspecting taller when I heard the crane was announced, then considered they rented what was available at the time for such a short duration project. Tormenta in Texas also used a 450 ft crane but it’s only a 309 foot coaster

2-3 months puts it around/after the Shoreline Pier opening which they might want to wait for so they can have uninterrupted marketing focusing on each area separately.

Few more from today...

It's still insane how easy everything is to see from the main Boardwalk path.

We'll see how the SFA rides are placed, but the sights from Superman's queue could get really interesting. As things stand, one could theoretically watch Toro, Medusa, and Project Purple operate simultaneously.

It may have been a pretty obvious assumption, but it was also quietly confirmed that this year's ACE event will feature another construction tour. They should raffle off the opportunity to spend a day observing from this bench.

I don't believe so. To my knowledge, this ride wasn't planned for SFGAdv until after the decision was made to close Kingda Ka.

When are we going to see an announcement??

I am still suspecting it will probably be announced at the opening of Shoreline Pier. I could absolutely see them doing all their speeches, then saying something along the lines of "and that's not all we have in store..." following by an announcement video for Phantom Spire.

Also, unrelated, but reading back through the past few pages of this thread, I'm pretty surprised how much concern there seems to be over the station setup for this attraction. Operationally, I see it as pretty similar to what Mack does on the PowerSplash (just with a sliding track instead of a turntable, though the latter would have been really cool on this ride), and at least in my experience Aquaman felt like it was a more efficient setup than Mr. Freeze. We won't know until we see it in action, of course, but I do think a lot of people are going to be surprised by how fast the line moves on this given that it's a shuttle.

From what I've personally heard, no. That giga was a B&M project dreamed up by Mike Spanos as his big contribution to the Six Flags chain, and it died with him when he left the role of CEO for Selim. Lore has it that it would have seated two riders across, started where the amphitheater near Medusa is, and gone south of the lake.

I don't believe so. To my knowledge, this ride wasn't planned for SFGAdv until after the decision was made to close Kingda Ka.
The tower coaster concept started out being pitched for various Cedar Fair parks and they probably had signed a contract with Mack to book a production slot ahead of time. Mack tends to have a couple years' waitlist for big projects so if in 2024 they wanted a major coaster delivered for 2026, that would have had to be inked before the Ka closure call was made, the earliest of which I can pinpoint it to was September 9, 2024 (not elaborating). A few weeks prior in August they had a refurbished Ka train return to the tracks, so on the park level at least they weren't prepared to ditch it so soon. That Fall they would have not been able to begin a conversation with Mack about delivering Project Purple within 24 months, they had to have signed off something sooner. You can do that with Premier Rides and Gerstlauer, maybe B&M, but big coaster projects generally take a lot of planning especially because those manufacturers have other clients to contend with.

It does look quite nice in purple! Note that the entirety of the tower (structure design, how many times it circles around the tower at the top, the theming, etc) is purely a guess, impossible to tell from just a footer placement map, so hopefully this gets close:)

I’m hoping more of the track on the way up the tower is facing outward vs inward.

Either way, that section at the top of the tower when you stall and are leaning directly face down is going to be absolutely thrilling.

Edit: I have a dumb silly question…. Can you possibly add a switch track before or after the stall that makes it so it can be a full circuit? Make it curve to the right and the bank left and back to the station? So we can see how it would potentially look to aid in capacity. I kinda want to see the miss opportunity render.

This is incredible. Really gives us more perspective on how this thing may turn out. I do hope Mack uses their technology to dampen the spinning a little (like on their other Extreme Spinners), so that it’s bearable to re-ride.

Also, your attention to detail is great here, great touch with the Ka pieces laying to the side and adding the new Pier area.
