My point is more about how plopping a bunch of flat rides in the middle of an area is not a good idea, aesthetically and marketability wise.

I think that a coaster should replace what was a super iconic ride to fill the void. But worst case scenario should still be a cool dark ride.

Again you really don't seem to understand how theme parks work given that your argument is based more on entitlement than actual fact.

It's not hard to fit flat rides in thematically and aesthetically to the area, even with as mishmashy of a theme as it has.

It's also not that hard to market them given that I really doubt the park would be stupid enough to say 'hey look at these rides they're replacing volcano lol'

Hell, I'd argue that putting a coaster there would look even more out of place than a few flat rides. Smaller footprint = less room covered = easier to blend it in.

(Not to say that flat rides will be replacing volcano of course, but insisting that nothing but a coaster should go there is a really entitled opinion which... that's not good.)

Yeah I’d like to direct you to the reception to Delirium replacing Shockwave. It’s not pretty. And doing the same after Volcano would be 10x as bad.
Personally I enjoy delirium more than shockwave and its head smashing goodness, also its a pretty ride that fits nicely in the revamped theme of CAG. Just because you don't like a flat and its looks that replaced an old coaster doesn't mean that's the circumstances for every other flat to come after a coaster removal. The area would definitely have a new feel if that were the case, but it would be a nice addition to that section of the park which currently only has 2 flats.

Based off the lines Delirium gets it's safe to say the people that complained about Delirium were a very vocal minority. Just like the people complaining about Twisted Timbers being a "rehashed Hurler" majority of people that go to amusement parks are just people trying to do something fun on a random day. Most of the time I feel like most people don't even pay attention to what the rides are called or anything. My former boss went to Kings Dominion and "didn't even notice" I305 the gigantic Giga coaster because he didn't give a crap about the skyline or anything the only the coaster he noticed was Dominator.

I think it's safe to assume if you're on this forum you're probably not the average park goer (and really, there's probably something a little wrong with all of us). Therefore, it's probably best practice not to assume anyone here can speak for the general public. Most people who go to parks don't care about themed minutiae, MCBRs, or how geologically accurate Smurf Mountain is.

If they are going to put in more flats then have them be cooler and more unique. Like a Star Shape would be super cool.

So I’m trying to think of the last time a park lost a major “landmark” like this to give them a reset on a major themed area and coming up blank.

I want to add: I don't count Galaxy's Edge, because that's not losing something. I don't count losing Jaws, because that was willingly taken out. The best I could think of is the tree in Merlin's Wood at IoA.

Closes I can think of would be BBW.

I loved BBW. That was a fun ride. I wish a new (actually) suspended coaster would be built and with nice theming. Not as a Volcano replacement but in addition to would be wonderful. KD needs another family coaster.
I find KD's family lineup stronger than BGW's at least, but I would love to see a suspended swinging coaster as Anaconda's replacement if its time comes.

I’m gonna go ahead and call right now what I think the replacement will be based on my gut feeling: Gerstlauer Infinity Coaster. This is only based on the fact Hangtime exists but for some reason I just can easily see one in that spot.

I would be ok with a Hangtime-type coaster as long as it has that awesome lighting package too. Having said that, I think if it’s going to be a little dive coaster-like then it should be done like a dive coaster and not the weird way how Hangtime does it. That looks unsatisfying.

With Cedar Fair cutting back on major capital expenditures (i.e. coasters), it sounded like CF was going forward with adding only one major coaster per year in the chain; at least for the next 3-5 years. I consider a major coaster costing over 18 million dollars.

I think you could get a reasonable mid-sized coaster in the 12-17 million dollar range. Course, the RMC raptor and the Infinity coasters at Cedar Fair's California parks probably fit in that price range. So, I guess it is possible for another CF park to get a coaster for 2020.

Given the land clearing going on at Kings Island right now, it looks like they are the CF park getting the major coaster for 2020.

I can't shake the feeling, at this point, that CF/KD are going the "generic" route, whether installing flat ride(s), a dark ride, or even another coaster on this site. I think there will be a themed structure on that spot. I don't know if it will be another mountain or something else.

Take the under. The waaaaaaaaay under on the RMC Raptors. Their price is in line with the other compact shuttle coasters that have been built recently, somewhere south of the $7 million mark.

Also two of their additions for the 2018 season would fall under that "mid-range" price you listed, which is why I think people don't fully understand exactly where Cedar Fair is going with their new adjusted investment strategy. Kings Island has been planning their 2020 addition for a few years now and I imagine it was too late to cancel the project when Cedar Fair changed their investment strategy after ruining the bed last year. I don't expect Cedar Fair to drop anything like a Giga or a major RMC / Steel coaster any time soon until their performance gets back in line to what their investors want.

I'm willing to be a coaster like Hangtime would be the bigger side of the investments outside of KI's 2020 project for the next few seasons going to the larger parks, while the smaller ones receive slightly better shares than restaurants and coats of paint. Cedar Fair likely will also be adjusting the CapEx more into themeing and appearance of the parks, trying to ditch that bleached look their parks became famous in the past.
