RE: Project 2018: Virtual Reality Europe in the Air Replacement

I do hope they at least do some more research, including this thread, before moving forward with their trademark.

Does anyone know if park leaders do read this site?

I would be confident that if they filed this they've done their research, they've market tested, and they know how to defend the name of anyone has an issue.

Not to be contrary and negative.  (except that is what I do)

I am confident that I would not have your confidence.  BGW has not been known, for the past decade or so for doing good market research.  They have had a tendency to live in their own bubble and been a bit of a "self licking ice cream cone"

I am not certain I know what you mean by, they know how to defend the name of anyone has an issue.

RE: Project 2018: Virtual Reality Europe in the Air Replacement

I would agree.... not because I'm saying they don't research things thoroughly; I really don't know. More because, as I noted, it's admittedly something that's probably less on the minds of the average guest. And it isn't something that needs to be defended per se, as you could easily point to the fact it's (a form of) the name of the island. "Why of course, the name is meant to refer to the island of Ireland in the time period that the ride is set, consistent with the time period and character portrayed in our hamlets..."

It doesn't change that it is a clumsy and poor choice for an attraction, IMHO, and it would be much easier to make the above (somewhat naive?) argument if the park hadn't already clumsily confused the time period and character portrayed in their hamlets by, well, Austin Powers-ifying Banbury Cross or adding stunt bike themes to Festa. ;)

I mean.....I just don't agree that it's so bad that if this is the name that it's that bad.

Personally I think the backstory for Invadr, even with the story of the Vikings being frozen in time, is far worse than a name that we have no details around.

I think they should stick with "The Otherworld". It evokes the sense of wonder and mystery that they're trying to go for. Regardless of the cultural implications, "Battle of Eire" just sounds like a chapter of my history textbook.

Look what I found:

The Otherworld

A magic fairy tale drawing on Pagan Celtic myths and Irish legends.

This interested me.  This is what I stumbled upon when I typed "the otherworld" into google:

I wonder if they would decide against that name to avoid any ties to religion. Certain denominations of Christianity, mostly derived from Ireland believe in a place which is sometimes referred in English to as "The Otherworld". I'm no expert on those specific denominations, but I don't know if they would find the name offensive or not. "The Otherworld" can be very loose term, and might not be an issue as it isn't very specific.

FYI. From earlier.

The Otherworld is well know in Celtic circles.

Celtic Otherworld

There is a local Episcopal Church that takes trips to Ireland to visit holy "thin places" where our world is closer to "promised lands". I don't know much about the Episcopal faith or if this is the norm, but Ireland is their trip to the holy land rather than the middle east.

BTW, shouldn't discussions like this go in the Project 2018 thread?

But, the religious angle is an interesting thought. People can always find something to be offended by.

RE: Project 2018: Virtual Reality Europe in the Air Replacement

Hmm, shades of Cedar Point dropping the name Banshee for their stand-up coaster in the mid-90s, due ostensibly to some concerns about Christian objections to that name.

Obviously there are no objections to that name these days. I always thought Mantis was a better name for a stand-up anyway.

For Stranger Things fans, I think the VR concept in the Questor building/queue would be a great location for some kind of trip to the Upside-Down.  Facing a demigorgon after winding through that long queue hallway could be pretty terrifying and seriously cool.  If only the Ireland theme had anything at all to with with 1980s-era SoCal.

I can't tell you how much I do not want to venture anywhere near the Upside-Down nor meet a Demigorgon (in any plain of existence).

RE: Project 2018: Virtual Reality Europe in the Air Replacement

Just think of how awesome that would look though. After all, the ride will in part be done by the same talented people who worked on DarKastle. :)

I'm guessing "next month" means after Howl-O-Scream. They do have one bay/cabin vacant for Unearthed, however. So maybe we will see something sooner.

RE: Project 2018: Battle for Eire (Virtual Reality Attraction)

At least "Eire" is spelled correctly for it's official name. And the ride looks freakin' sweet, can't wait until 2018. :)

RE: Project 2018: Battle for Eire (Virtual Reality Attraction)

The park also just posted two new links.

New Ride Attraction in 2018 Battle For Eire

and

Construction Updates

This is probably the most important part right now. A while back I heard that they are going to have 1,000 (2,000?) headsets so they can clean them.

Battle For Eire Quick Facts

• State-of-the art 360-degree virtual reality headsets combined with a motion-based theater simulator will create an innovative experience unlike any other in the attraction industry

• Head mounts will be distributed to guests before each ride and will be sanitized after every use (similar to 4D glasses at attractions such as Curse of DarKastle)

• Head mounts are adaptable to many sizes

• VR headsets, which are tethered to the motion simulator seats, will connect to guests’ head mounts via magnetic closure

• A standard version of the video will be available for those interested in a more traditional experience

• Attraction video was created in 4K resolution
