RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

^ I'm with Pandora. If it is "only" 260ft(somewhat short for something of this caliber, and remember it will be less than 260 ft, meaning it could be only 200) there is a good chance that it could be a themed ride such as ToT. That is one of, if not my favorite non coaster thrill ride. It's like Darkastle with a real world part integrated.
Also, don't forget about that leak about the 2 coasters. We could have been misinformed, one drop tower, one coaster. IMO, the park needs more thrilling non coaster rides. Things that spin and swing are only fun for so long.
One more wishful comment. If they do move the catapult, it would be great to have it replaced in Castle O' Sullivan. I would love to see how Elmo reacts to a mutiny. lol

Chin up guys, this could be great. And swift, it's not like you would not like to ride a drop tower. I might even prefer it to Griffon, seeing as how it is basically a glorified free fall tower.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

This better be the best themed tower ride on earth because if it is anything like the one at KD, I will hate it. I have been on three different drop towers. One launched one at a fair, The Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios, and Drop Zone at KD. Why do I hate them so much? They don't do much of anything. The take you up and then they drop you. That, however, is not the main reason that I hate them. The worst thing about drop towers, by far, is how they look. It is a big stick. Not beautiful, hilly, curving, and twisting coaster track, just a big pole.

When I saw the height, I was surprised as well. If they wanted to make a normal drop tower, why didn't they top KD's? This leads me to believe that they have something up their sleeves... (Which they better.) I looked up the specs for Tower of Terror and found that it is 199ft tall however I also found a reason for that height.

Height: At 199 feet tall, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ is one of the tallest theme park attraction at the WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort. (One foot under restrictions that would have placed a flashing red light on top of the Tower for Air Traffic reasons).

So they could of built it taller however they chose to keep it under 200ft for the reason listed in the quote.

Something else I found that was interesting:

Budgets of the Tower of Terrors:
Tower of Terror (Disneyland Paris): $180 Million
Tower of Terror (Disney-MGM Studios): $140 million
Tower of Terror (Disneyland): $ 70-90 million
Tower of Terror (Tokyo Disney): $ 160 million

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I'm thinking they may be taking this tower up higher than 200. Probably not all the way to 260, but 230 or 240 sounds reasonable. I'm not thinking that it will be fully enclosed like ToT. I think the top of it will be exposed. But what do I know?

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I am with Chris here with a partial enclosure would be the best guess. That sounds more of BGW's style and dedication to themeing... not to mention having something hidden and shoot out like a rocket would grab folks attention. Still, just like Swiftman, I think traditional pole drop towers look ugly and plain boring. Griffon and when you think about it, Davinci's Cradle, is pretty much the same gut dropping feeling as a plain ol' drop tower and the height to me does not matter all that much- they all feel the same.

Roller coasters however, have a different feel - the Apollo's Chariot vs Alpengeist are nothing like each other. I would love a Tower of Terror concept. I prefer variation of the story. One reason I hate themed dark rides is that if you ride more than a dozen times... you start to memorize the dialogue (for me I can listen to something twice and memorize it thanks to a brain that sucks up useless info like that). I start to find the dialogue annoying and would rather just sit back and enjoy the dips and turns. Still, rides such as these are better suited for tourists and not passmembers like myself who go to the park more times than one can keep track of.

Except Griffon you are falling face down.

Also if it does go in Der Katapult spot, I hope the ride is moved, not removed.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I hope it goes back where it came from. Sounds like it was great there.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

Oh if only the Katipult would go back to the original location.. if only. Alas, Elmo has made residence at the old location and I doubt if that furry monstrosity would ever leave any time soon.

Actually, I have a strong feeling after digging around a bit; that nothing is being removed from the park to make way for this tower... perhaps just rearranged.

Oh and Alpenscoot, I meant that drop rides in general feel the same... even if you are facing down or sideways- or anything. The one great thing that I will mention about Griffon is that BGW was unique in having the drop ride include inversions and the second mini-drop towards the end is a nice touch. I just wish it were longer and perhaps left more trees standing in the park.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I think it would be pretty cool if they built a massive german castle with a drop tower inside the tallest spire. They could then built a green flyer that would be themed to a dragon and have it circle the castle at its highest point and fly around the exterior of the castle. It would be even cooler if there was flame thrower effects on the sides of the train that would mimic a fire-breathing dragon (i know that this is probably impossible, but hey I can dream).

Also, I think it would be awesome if the riders on the drop tower would drop right when the flying coaster came flying past them. The castle could have a hole in the top of the spire that would look like the dragon crushed it. The riders would be looking outside of this hole and suddenly, the green coaster would fly in front of them, shooting fire and then they would drop.

If the train can't have the fire effects, then there would be some flamethrowers on the side of the hole.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

@Alpie

That would be quite a show for everyone involved, including people just watching. The fire effects would probably be too much for BGW, but a cool idea though.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

All my hopes and dreams for the future new area:

1. Spain
2. Tower of Terror-style insanity tower.
3. Heavily themed mine train. MINE. TRAIN. PLEASE.
4. Air conditioned beer and tapas place.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I'd love to see a Tower of Terror like ride, but why a mine train?

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I just love mine trains and I think BG could really do one right. The terrain in the BBW area would be great for one as well.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

Anyone think this could just be an observation tower of some sort?

I initially thought it could be something like that, but the waiver application specifically says it will be for a thrill attraction. I wouldn't think an observation tower would be considered to be in that category.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I was thinking about that, but it says that it is a thrill ride, so I'm thinking, no.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

I'm not saying that the permit is for a coaster. I'm saying that the second roller coaster that we heard of is actually a drop tower. ie, we get 1 coaster and 1 tower.

RE: Replacement Project For Big Bad Wolf

One thing I'm pretty sure of here is that, at least the top 200 ft., will have to be a blue or white color as per James City County requirements. What that means as far as what kind of theming could be done, who knows. If you're wondering what the requirements are, JCC requires any part of a structure over 60ft. to be "muted and blend with the sky". Obviously the county has made exceptions in the past (Apollo's Chariot), but the Griffon lighting request has been met with a requirement that this rule is adhered to, so perhaps they're going to be firm on this rule at this point and in the near future.

Thats exactly what i was thinking. I actually posted my idea on the previous page.
