RE: Night Beats (2012 to Present)

The extra blocking, Beatrix's talk to the crowd and some other things are to take up the extra time for the missing tunes.

I believe we aren't suppose to name people. So, vaguely, choreography changes are likely because they have a new local choreograph. This change over REALLY shows in NB. Her lack of variety in choreography would seem like a grim outlook for future creativity and artistic expansion. I'm not sure why the old gal's works need to be replaced in the first place. The old choreography girl we liked very much.

Here is a project for you. Watch for how many shows now have the knee-slap-hand-clap-stomp-feet move. Also, running in circles around some object.

Uninspired dance changes, added story, new blocking and extra dialog that kills the show's pace to a near stop at times. Not a fan of the changes at all. Loosing the Jitterbug and WHAM is more than fine with us. Still a fan of the show, especially Ulrich and the excellent Beatrix this year. But we are missing some endearing touches. What this cast could do given the proper tools...

Hmm, that was also a complaint about the recent incarnation of "This Is Oktoberfest!". Could the new choreographer be responsible for the negative changes in that show as well?

The strategy of the current BGW Entertainment department seems to be to constantly tinker with shows for no particular reason, especially if the shows are popular and well-liked. "This is good, so let's ruin it!" as well as "This is bad, let's make it worse!".

Perhaps the goals is too have all else SO bad that LR looks good? Winner by default? LR v1 certainly can't excel on it's own.

Not knowing the guy personally, it seems like he has it out for all shows not his. Possibly jealousy that others can achieve shadowing his inadequacies?

I was thinking the same thing.

They were shuffling around in TIO. The knee slapping and all, that has been the same for a very long time. The choreography for TIO has primarily always stayed the same, it depends on how thoroughly they teach it to the performers. The top of their bodies(handwork, etc.) are fine in TIO, the footwork is just non-existent.

But getting back on topic, if anyone has seen past years of Night Beats, you know this year the choreography is absolutely terrible. I know most of you hardly ever studied the dance moves in a show, but if you did, you just know how terrible this year's dancing is. Night Beats has been known for modern and contemporary, fast-paced and slow-paced ballroom dancing, this year that is definitely not the case. Instead, it has been substituted for generic moves, and half the time they're not even dancing, just standing, or walking around the stage. The screwed up choreography made the show almost un-bearable for me, especially when I think of what it used to be.

To give you just one glimpse of how bad it is: In the opening number when the singers sing "We're running running with the shadows of the night!" the dancers literally run in slow motion around the ladder, yes I'm serious.

Matthew has found the first one. :)

#2. The Get Happy kick line has been replaced by the dancers running around Beatrix's gaudy pink casket .

RE: Night Beats (2012 to Present)

That is indeed another very obvious one. Don't forget the other shows, though. (TIO doesn't count). :) You could add in looking for the knee-slap-hand-clap-stomp-feet move for fun, or if you are bored.

Actually, unless y'all are drawing specific correlations between your objections to other shows and Night Beats 2014, I think random complaints need to be put in the proper threads. If someone wants to create a general thread about systemic problems with choreo, feel free. Otherwise, please stick to discussing NB.

Relevant. There are more circles in NB besides the ladder.
Someone is welcome to make choreography thread, if they so please.

RE: Night Beats (2012 to Present)

I just remembered what the first duet with Ulrich and Beatrice reminds me of. It's very Gomez and Morticia Addams. Just with a lot less things that have the potential to kill them.

I'm not sure if I like it or not now that I've equated it to that.

RE: Night Beats (2012 to Present)

Wait, wait, wait. The owl ballroom scene is gone? I liked that scene a lot. It had an 80s Labyrinth type vibe to it. :(

RE: Night Beats (2012 to Present)

Hoping someone gets video soon so I can see. Probably won't get there this year.
