RE: Night Beats (2012 to Present)
The vocalists are fantastic through and through. In fact, this year's Beatrix may be the best person who has played the part yet. The clear vocal talent of the performers makes the fact that BGW ruined the show far, far worse.
To give people an idea, Beatrix now walks around on stage alone for what felt like an eternity asking the audience if Ulrich really loves her and if she should stay or not.
Night Beats was supposed to be BGW's refined, mature Howl-O-Scream production and, for two amazing years, it was. Night Beats opened with awe-inspiring talent, stunning choreography, incredible pacing and transitions, fabulous costumes, etc. All that, aside from the talent, is gone. There are some good costumes left, but even the bulk of them have been downgraded.
I'm sure anyone who has seen Night Beats remembers the owl ballroom scene- not because it was iconic or blew anyone's minds, but because, especially in 2012, it was just a beautiful section of the show. Fabulous ballroom dancing with curious avian touches all the way through. It was just a gorgeous number. That has been replaced with people in similar outfits with red feathered boas "dancing" on tables. The entire heart and soul of that section of the show is gone.
Night Beats used to be a great dance show with a live band and a few stellar vocalists. The cast has been widdled down so far now that all they seem to have left is vocalists and band. The beautiful dance numbers are gone. All of Night Beats' choreography is gone.
Then, as icing on the shit cake, the transitions. I always admired Night Beats' icy smooth transitions. Despite its constant costume changes, you never felt like you were watching filler. This year, you feel as though 50% of the show is pure, horrible filler. 2014's pacing is absolutely disastrous.
Seriously. Busch Gardens Williamsburg has fucked Night Beats. It's now trying to be funny and sexy (read: campy and trashy) and, with Fiends right across the park, needless to say, Night Beats isn't even going to get the attention of the group of people who like such things. Worse, it completely fucked up the show for all the rest of us.
