RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

I don’t understand why ya’ll are making such a big deal about this. SeaWorld and Busch Tampa have been sporting these types of shirts for a while now, except theirs are solid colors. It’s not like its ruining the theming of the park. Yes, its not like the days of lederhosen at Alpengeist, etc. but those are long gone. They’re just streamlining the park’s system and making things more easily replaceable and cleaner looking.

They are making the park more like an amusement park rather than a theme park. I mean, bowling shirts; what could be more corny? Not to say they won't look nice, or can't be nice. They are just very different from the parks usual style and are a big change in the parks look. Why else is anything ever discussed?

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

Think about it from an employee's point of view; if it's 103 degrees outside, what would you rather work in: a nice airy bowling shirt or an uptight olde world Europe getup? The park has massive amounts of employees, they can't give them all full costumes. The street performers and show people (etc.) have the detailed, themed uniforms and that is more than enough for me. Can't at least we reserve judgement of the uniforms until we see them? I swear the people that hate the park the most are its biggest fans...

We have seen the shirts- they're Germany shirts in different colors. Disney, Universal, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement and countless others use fully themed costumes year-round. If they can do it, there is no reason BGW can't as well. When I was at BGT and SeaWorld last week one of the things I HATED was that the employees made no effort to stay in character at all- they're just employees in uniforms selling you crap from carts and pushing buttons on rides. For a theme to work, you have to carry it all the way through and employees are a huge part of this.

So in other words, use those Irish accents on the automated spiels again... lol

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

Well, you know back when I had a small job at the park, I would always greet people in the language of the country I was in, to help with the overall theme. It works very nicely. Also take into consideration, employee comfort is not their top priority. Their top priority is how are we going to present our employees to our guests and how to theme them. Obviously they want to give a more somewhat professional look while still being themed, because that is what those bowling shirts remind me of.

Also, it is like I said before, you don't have to have extremely detailed outfits. If you have 3-4 different types of pants/shirts for each area, along with job specific outfits, they can still be like simple vests with a few changes here and there, or slightly different shirts in some way. this would make the outfits themed, customization for the employee, and help the overall theme of being somewhere else and not in an amusement park. I swear with these new shirts, they took a step backwards. I feel like I'm in an amusement park even more.

I have mixed feelings about the new shirts, I liked the old uniforms although they did make us REALLY HOT, but the new shirts look like cotton, and doesn't cotton make you even hotter?

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

I don't think it will be that major of an issue. I mean the rides will still run the same and it's not like the actors in the shows will be wearing the bowling shirts. It's also not like KD where it's the same uniform for every section of the park.

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

The employees didn't stay in character any better when they wore the old costumes. They were just a bunch of teenagers in silly outfits. Dressing employees up in traditional costumes does not make them act like they are from that region. Colonial Williamsburg can manage to have character actors because they pay more money and therefore have more motivated cast members who can look and act the part. BGW just has too many employees to be able to that sort of thing.

The old uniforms were ligther than the new ones so they're obviously gonna be cooler. Plus many of those uniforms have been around for who knows how long and I'm sure most of them have gotten worn down over time. Give the new uniforms 10-20 years and they'll be as thin as the old ones were.

Having worn the new uniforms, they were definitely hotter during the summer though.

Va summers are hot....most will be hot no matter what they wear(aside from underarmour). If you can't be in the shade...cop a sweet tan and drink water. Stop complaining...

Last year, in the area I worked, they got brand new shirts, but they were the older version shirts. They were very hard but after a 3 to 5 five times in the washer and using them for about a week, they softened up. They were okay with the heat, but lets face it. Heat is heat no matter what you wear.

As for employee's character, yes it is important employees follow a certain act around guests to help the guests feel immersed, but you can't teach thousands of employees how to speak different European languages in two months. Although, that would be cool. Most employees are very professional, and that is what they should be.
An outfit may not make the person act well enough, but to be honest I prefer slightly themed vests/shirts of various kinds dependent on the employees position, instead of some bowling team. It just flows better unless you are going for the catoony amusement park, which they seem to be doing with the renovation.

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

yes humid...but to me its just plain old freakin hot and sticky... :p

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

Actually, I think this past summer wasn't that humid as it was the summer in 2007. Man that was a humid summer. I think it has just been more hot than humid.

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

They should have more job related themed outfits for their rides. Like EitA and CoDK outfits.

RE: New (Bowling) Shirts for Everyone

I'm hoping that Verbolten will have it's own uniforms, not the generic Oktoberfest uniforms
