Oh I'm in the same boat as you...my theory is that they were testing for worst case scenario...but they probably weren't expecting this to happen seeing as how they didn't have a back-up

Math told them before it was built what would happen in a brake failure scenario. Something else happened.

Right?! Thats what I was trying to say

RE: Mäch Tower

Yeah it might've told them that but what happens on paper ajd what happens in reality are two completely different things

just wondering...do you know when Mach will open? I know you cant tell us and I am not asking that, just curious if you know the date?

No I mean the brakes did what they were supposed to do...severely slow it down. Unfortunately there were no shock absorbers at the bottom (which are needed) to make a full stop

What? They took out part of the ride just to see what would happen? Those absorbers are what catch the car at the bottom. I don't understand why you would remove that. It's physically impossible for the brakes to ever stop the car completely. Although, the concrete is pretty good at that.

Also it sounds like there's some conflicting info here. Does anyone know for sure what happened?

RE: Mäch Tower

@er111a: no I do not...I'm not sure anyone does

@pandora: from what I've read, they were never put on

Not with the margin calculated into the resistance.

RE: Mäch Tower

I can't figure out why they would test the ride without equipment they obviously needed. They know every detail of the technical aspects from engineering that was done prior so there's no excuse for not having the proper equipment installed. Someone blew it big time on this one.

RE: Mäch Tower

Don't take my exact word for what happened...I'm only guessing based on the accounts I've heard, what people have told me, etc. It sounds like what I've said, but I can't be 100% sure. But indefinitely agree

Yay! Chris and I agree!

RE: Mäch Tower

I'm going to find out more about this. I agree there are just some things here that don't add up.

RE: Mäch Tower

It doesn't add up because the park is trying to keep this as quiet as possible. From what I hear, they really (yes, bold and italics) didn't want the news to get out.

I'm talking more about the mechanics of what went wrong not whether it happened or not.

RE: Mäch Tower

Yes, I know, but when a park tries to keep something like this quiet instead of just coming out and saying what's going on (see Dollywood with Timber Tower), rumors are just going to run rampant.

I wonder is Busch is kicking itself in the ass for not getting over their Intamin beef right now (yes yes, i'm sure Moser was able to provide the look, feel, and other stuff more readily than intamin as large business decisions are decided on a grudge)

But no really. This sounds like some worst case scenario type stuff. I hope they issue a statement...or better yet, Swift comes to us with some anonymous information

So we're playing telephone huh?

RE: Mäch Tower

I really hope that all the problem is was that they just tested a "worst case scenario" and didn't realize how fast the car would be going when it hit the magnets. I want to know if it slowed down or just impacted at top speed. If it did slow down I guess that would mean they wanted the car to slow down as late as possible like some of the better drop towers out there.

RE: Mäch Tower

Also though how did this not happen in the earlier testsd of the ride. Out of how many test runs then it hits the bottom, if something like this was to happen it should have happened on the first test.

RE: Mäch Tower

B-Mac, MT will always slow down at the same spot as it uses permanent magnets for brakes. They don't really have any control over that. The only things I could think would affect it are temperature and load. It should have impacted at the same speed that it normally lands at, unless something went horribly wrong.
