RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

I see it as Hurler taking up a lot of room and being somewhat costly to maintain for a ride that doesn't seem to be popular. Removing Hurler, to me, seems like a good step in getting a new coaster.

Room is not an issue, the park has plenty of room for a new coaster and we have no idea what it costs to maintain her. Certain a re-track should not cost the same as a new coaster.

Personally I applaud the park for getting its house in order before they take on a new big coaster.

Maybe I just see Hurler as mess that's been attempted to be fixed multiple times that should probably be euthanized, but I have no love for it and think the park has other priorities.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

So, if they are going to completely retheme Hurler, I wonder what they will name it and how it will be decorated. I'm not sure what would make sense in that area.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

That seems like a question for our resident Hurler-area theme professional, Joe.

In all seriousness though, is the area themed to an era where a comic book monster theme would make sense (see: Aquazoid before detheme)? Is there any chance we could see the park's most generic coaster, Ricochet, rethemed to match whatever Hurler reopens as?

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

Well, since the removal of the Wayne's World theme in the early 2000's, the area encompassing Hurler, Ricochet, Rock Shop, and now Windseeker has taken on a 1940's-50's "Happy Days"-esque theme, complete with a doo wop and rock-n-roll soundtrack.

As much as I love the "doo wop" theme of the area, as it is a fairly uncommon amusement park theme, it only scratches the surface of its full potential. You've got Juke Box Diner, with a giant jukebox facade and several old 50's television sets and props throughout the restaurant. There's Rock Shop with its giant guitar facade, and of course you've got the old Corvette and Cadillac cars in front of Juke Box Diner. Near the Grove Stage, there's the Coke truck with retro Coke marketing and distinctly 50's style drawings of truck drivers.

But there's much more to the 50's American culture of the area than what's currently explored.

What are some other themes that fit the time period? There's rock-n-roll, sweet cars, sure. Like Zachary said, sci-fi monster movies dominated the 50's, and an Aquazoid-type theme would fit beautifully in the area. In a similar sci-fi vain, outer space and aliens were a huge part of 50's pop culture. Yes, Kings Dominion already has an alien-themed ride with Flight of Fear, but a distinctly caricatured, cartoony 50's alien theme could also blend right in to the area.

Heck, Coca-Cola took off in the 50's, and Coke is still known for its retro 50's advertising. Coke just loves sponsoring theme park products... maybe we could see the world's first Coca-Coaster™. Theme the train to an out-of-control Coke truck en route to deliver its delicious soda! Quality theming right there. :p

That said, if Hurler does return in 2017 (which, at this point, I'm still not completely sure of), I don't expect many changes coming as far as theming and naming goes. I think new branding would be a smart business decision, as the freshly-refurbished Hurler could be marketed as a new coaster experience. But sadly, I don't the park would put in the effort.

However, if/when Hurler closes, perhaps one of these themes could be explored for its replacement. I really do think the "doo-wop" area (which, itself, needs its own designated name), has a fun and unique theme that fits perfectly in the park. I hope that whatever comes to the area, whether it's a refurbished Hurler or a new ride altogether, continues that theme.

I really don't see KD removing another coaster just yet. When was the last time a park dropped two coasters in a row?

Agreed!

They need to get rid of it STAT! It only ran well the first three years it was open, then it started to deteriorate drastically. The space would be better used for a new coaster.

If Cedar Fair can pay a ton of money to remove SOB, then removing Hurler shouldn't be an issue!

So, every time Cedar Fair makes good money in a year, a wooden coaster must come down? (SOB at KI, Thunder Road at CW). Hurler might be next on the chopping block?

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

For right now, I am staying neutral concerning what will happen to Hurler. It is just too early to say if a major refurbishment is CF/KD's goal for this attraction or if the public relations story on a Hurler refurbishment is a cover for something totally new coming for 2017.

If this project involves the Hurler, then it could be coming down OR it could be getting a major makeover (a la RMC) and being promoted as a "New" attraction for 2017. For me, just re-tracking a wood coaster is not something I would consider marketing as "New for 2017". It falls under normal maintenance.

I would hope that CF would choose KD for a major new coaster next year. Kings Dominion is solidly in the middle of the park chain profits makers. I realize that Carowinds is getting the bulk of the investments/attractions through 2017, for the east coast CF parks. I just keep thinking 2017 is the year for a new coaster for KD. I assume we will find out by late June if something major is in the works for next year or not.

I'm at the park now. At the top of Grizzly I saw a lot of heavy equipment and the Hurler trains just kind of dumped by the service road next to it.

Where did I say anything about the park making money?

If anything, CF lost a TON of money on SOB. They acquired Paramount Parks and the baggage that came with SOB. The ride was down more than it was open for the duration that the company owned it. They spent tons of money trying to fix it and in the end they had no alternative but to remove it as it was sucking up resources.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

April fools is over. I saw pieces of coaster on the ground over at hurler while climbing Grizzly's lift. (I saw no trains though.)

I was pretty sure those were pieces of Grizzly from its retracking over the off-season, but I could be wrong.
