RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

I don't think it is coming back.... Been sitting too long this year with no work or updates. Think the park is looking for alternatives or already has one in mind.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

I was at the park yesterday and they had a staff member stationed by Hurler's entrance all the whole time I was there. That seemed a little strange has anyone heard of any incidents involving it?

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

Around 25:27 in this video by In The Loop, Clint Novak asks Gary Chadwick about Hurler. As soon as he mentions the coaster, you can see Chadwick grow uncomfortable. In fact, the second Clint says the word "Hurler," Chad starts swaying from side to side and shifts his weight repeatedly, while biting his lip. He then plays dumb and says "We teased stuff about Hurler?," despite having mentioned Hurler himself several times in his own video.

Then, Katelyn jumps in and also gives off awkward body language (shifting side-to-side, not making eye contact), then laughs nervously. Then, when asked if more information will be released, she quickly states "You'll always know more eventually," which doesn't even make sense. She seemed extremely uncomfortable.

Then Chad adds, "We can only fit so much into one day." When asked if Hurler will be open for the 2017 season, Chad stutters and says they haven't decided what the 2017 lineup will be.

I don't like to read too far into things, but this amount of awkwardness and nervousness seems rather extreme for a ride that, according to the park website, is undergoing routine maintenance. They're also changing their story- earlier, it was made clear that Hurler would reopen for 2017. Now, they "haven't decided."

I'm not suggesting anything here- I just am surprised by how awkward the mention of the ride's name made two of the park's highest-up executives. Clint may as well have said Voldemort's name.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

Some people (especially Clint Novak) have interviewed Busch Gardens Tampa about Gwazi's closure and what to expect in the future. At first, most park officials (Such as Mark Rose-VP of Design and Engineering as well as Park President, Jim Dean) looked very calm and "excited for the future".

As time goes by, their responses always seem less optimistic about Gwazi, and some look sad when the name is brought up. The question is: what made executives in both (unrelated) parks change their demeanor so quickly on similar ride-types? Did they both suffer the same fate?

When I look at Gwazi and Hurler, I notice that both appear visibly warped. Hurler might be slightly worse off visually, but its hard to tell the state a coaster is in from looks alone. Some might look perfectly fine, yet they wouldn't make it much past the station. I'm not saying Hurler is that bad off, but it makes me wonder "What if?".

I think RMC/GCI Hurler is still possible for 2017. Yesterday showed multiple clues.

Would you mind elaborating, MadMax? I can't say I agree with you, but I'd love to hear your thought process.

One, the "Wait, there's more" thing at the end, plus Chad being very mum about Hurler at the end. It could also mean that it's being demolished after this year, but RMC is not entirely out of the question.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

If they have something lined up for Hurler, yesterday should have been the time to announce it while all eyes were on KD.

This might not seem related at first (and it might still be), but hear me out (this might need to be split out into a new thread of staff deems it so).  Yesterday I noticed that the refillable cups were Valarian from CP branded.  It got me thinking.  There's been little visible work done on Hurler, they're only getting three kiddy flats, and they can't even get their own refillable cups.  Just what is the situation with KD financially or their relationship with CF corporate? Is the budget CF allowing the park so small that they have to wait multiple years for renovation work on Hurler? I don't know if this is really the case, but something less than ideal for KD is happening.

I think you are reading to much into it. If I remember correctly this is the first year KD had the season long free refill cups which are the ones in question. There for they had no good baseline for sales forcasting on them. They simply ordered to few and were running out near theend of the season. This lwft Cedar Fair with two choices order more for kd for 2016 or check to see if any of their other parks had a surplus. The later made better money sense and that what they did. At least that is my theory.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

I don't think they're hiding anything.

As I've said before, I truly believe nobody knows Hurler's fate. Nobody at Kings Dominion, not even anybody at Cedar Fair has decided Hurler's fate. That's my belief. I think the laughably unpopular, horribly rough wooden coaster has merely been closed until something can be done with it.

I've started to wonder if Hurler's closure was a last-minute decision. There was no announcement about it last year, which is strange considering guests were given several months warning to get their final rides on the equally unpopular and equally rough Shockwave.

My hypothesis is that the decision to close Hurler was made sometime during the 2015-2016 off season due to a combination of complaints about the ride's roughness and its unpopularity, or a structural/mechanical problem.

If I'm correct, that would mean there would not have been nearly enough time to plan a replacement. Even small projects are in the plannings stages for several years. Heck, the Planet Snoopy expansion could very well have been in the works before the decision to close Hurler was even made.

While I think hoping for anything else in 2017 is wishful thinking, I wouldn't write off a project involving Hurler or the westernmost corner of Candy Apple Grove in some future season yet. Give it time.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

I'm now seeing on TPR rumors about Mean Streak and Hurler getting RMC'd alongside each other. Their not high-demand coasters like B&Ms are. They can be completed quickly. I still see one or both for 2017.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

Madmax, I think it would be helpful if you included that "evidence" with your claim so it doesn't get thrown into the "baseless speculation" pile. ;)

I believe madmax was on TPR beforehand. I remember reading people raging at him for his "dumb" predictions. In return Clint banned him. Im new here as well, I was a long-term lurker and understand the format this forum is going for. If you don't have proof for your explanation you may not recieve the nicest reply. I do appreciate your contributions as I do everyone else though! Welcome to the forums ;)

To stay on topic.... Go Hurler!???

That wasn't Clint Novak, but Robb Alvey.

Anyways the next coaster will have to do with Hurler, one way or another. They badly need to add another ride, because they cannot risk losing attendance to Busch Gardens.

KD isn't ever going to have more attendance than Busch. Busch is one of the most visited theme parks. However, I would say KD may experiance a small slump next year with BGW getting invadR. As for Hurler, I honesty see it getting removed at this point. The ride was never great from the start and never formed a line. Unless a conversion is made I think removing Hurler is the best option to prepare for 2018.

Busch Gardens attendance is always higher because its located in a tourist city with tons of hotels and KD is located in Doswell which has a truck stop and maybe 3 hotels. In regards to the Hurler, sometimes needs to be done with it because its way rougher than the Grizzly and I have a hard time riding it because it tears my back up.

RE: Hurler Closed for 2016

Just curious, but if they do an RMC conversion on it, how long realistically would it take? I mean given that the winter here can be harsh, working through winter into early spring, would it be possible to complete a renovation without advising the public? I know it's probably not the norm to not make announcements, but could it be a possibility (as far fetched as it may seem?)
