I was able to do around half of the mazes tonight. I was able to do every maze Friday night and wanted to see how some of them compared. I wasn't able to judge the mazes fully Friday, they were all working out kinks, and the actors were still getting a feel for their environment. However, I think tonight I was able to judge the mazes for what they really were.
Lumberhack: Cutting it close to Bitten tonight, but ended up on the top. Vastly improved over Friday. Just waiting in line and looking at the very daring house in the distance, and hearing the bloodcurdling screams and sounds was really, really spooky, just to begin with. But holy cow, this maze is a force to be reckoned with. The actors were amazing, and the staffing really packed the house with actors. Just to give you a feeling of how dedicated the actors were. One of the first actors at the beginning of the house, who is supposed to act all panicked, never once broke character, not even between groups(you could see here while waiting in line). The masks on the actors are just fantastic, they make just catching a glimpse of them quite scary. So many scare tactics, like the slidable saw blade, and the power tools that produce sparks, all add to the uniqueness of the house. The nearly pitch blackness makes the entire maze very disorienting. When the end of the house nears and you get to the boardwalk, it's nearly engulfed in fog with a strobe going off in the background, and actors are almost impossible to see, so anyway they scare you it's almost always surprising.
I don't think I can find a flaw in this maze, maybe its somewhat short length, but that's about it.
Bitten: This house was already performing fantastically on Friday, and I saw the same thing tonight. It was really nice to see a lot of the old scares that the house was built for being utilized again. The blacklight room, the surprise opening of the closet with the loud scream, and the coffin opening were all being utilized. The performers were all fantastic, many were working in pairs. Made an older house seem very refreshing.
Cornered: This house was performing a little better than it was on Friday, which isn't a bad thing at all considering it was performing very well then too. Many of the actors had improved their character tremendously. The stacking issues I experienced on Friday night were eliminated, which was strange considering they were letting more people in at a higher rate tonight. After experience, the mirror maze is far more effective in the dark than it is in the daytime, but it was still pretty good. The actors in the corn maze part were very good. A couple of them were helping push people to go a longer route, and another one of the actors scared me twice. I think more cornstalks and hiding places for the actors in this area could really improve it.
The soundtrack and noises in this maze really make sure each part has a different feel to it. Also, like Lumberhack, the masks on the scare actors are amazingly detailed and extremely effective. I'm going to have nightmares about the guy in the first building, because of his mask. With a few easy tweaks, Cornered could go from a good maze to an excellent one.
Deadline: Last, but certainly not least was Deadline. Probably performing on par with Friday night, it is still performing the best I've seen in years. The actors are really good at hiding themselves effectively, so you can't see if they're there until you get to them. Otherwise, the sets for Deadline remain unchanged, and atmosphere still effective as ever. But with great actors, it is amazing this year.
