HoS used to get up to park capacity. It used to get a lot of attention.
HOS still gets the park up to capacity and it still gets a lot of attention. Whether you think its scary or not. Those last few weekends of the event are insane. It wasn't surprising to see 2+ hour waits at most of the major rides and the mazes.
CT gets really heavy crowds too, but the park has to give away the gate in order to keep those crowds up. The only reason CT made more money last year than in years past was the $12 days, which helped keep crowds through the entire weekend as opposed to just Saturdays.
So is HOS still scary? I think so. Yes some of the mazes are completely lackluster, but everybody's favorite go-to haunt (KD's) has plenty of lackluster mazes that feel old, tired and dated too. In fact, some of their best mazes (Doll Factory, Cornstalkers) have been around for years along with some of their worst (Alien Outbreak, Club Blood).
So that leaves the whole budget thing and making the event better overall. The park needs to stop skimping on all the props (Vampire Point, 13, Pirates), improve the existing good mazes (fix up some of the broken props, new rooms), and work on transforming the underperforming ones by either replacing them or training the actors better.
Word on the street has it that the park plans to replace most of the mazes this year. We'll see what happens then.
