Ah, well ya boy STONEY made it out to Howl O Scream last night!!! It was def an interesting experience

We got through the gates right at 7:00 before any real rainfall. Headed towards Apollo and was told it was closed down due to “approaching storm” and told all the houses were still open. Heavy rainfall started, and I was able to get to Inferno where there were literally zero other guests so my partner and it felt like my partner and I had a personalized walkthrough of the maze. Seemed well staffed and engaged actors.

Walked out and trekked through the rain to festa Italia and was told that maze was closed. Went over the bridge to Witch Woods to see that was closed as well… I assumed that meant Nevermore was closed so we walked all the way back through to Ireland and went through the Diner which was pretty decent. Walked around more and discovered pretty much every coaster was still closed. Closer to 9, we were able to get on Verbolten and Pantheon with zero line, straight up walked on. We managed to get to Nevermore, and then walked onto Apollos Charriot at 9:30, it was closed the entire night but opened right as we were about to head to the gate.

Maybe you all can give me some insight though, because I was a little put off by a few things during this visit. First thing is, I am an unlimited pass member and for some reason I recalled there always being an option to purchase member discounted guest tickets. Struggled to navigate the online portal to see if this was still a thing, if I read it correctly they only offer guest ticket discounts for certain dates? So, I paid full price for a ticket for my partner.

In the past, I had always been told they will issue a readmission ticket if weather causes ride or operations closures. The thing is, I understand and was aware of the chance of a storm that day… but it was a complete mess trying to navigate the park even after the rain stopped close to 9. For starters, most of the attractions didn’t have a “closed” sign at the entrance signaling the ride was closed, and no staff seemed to be aware of what was operating and what wasn’t. We walked to Loch Ness Monster at 9:10 and saw no one at the entrance and walked all the way through the queue to reach the station for the employees to tell us it was closed. The same thing happened immediately after when trying to get on Apollos Charriot.

So, around 9:40 we were making our way to the front to leave and I decided to inquire about a readmission ticket just for the fact that most of our time spent there was walking back and forth trying to find out what was actually open. Guest services seemed to be very annoyed at my request. I was very polite and explained that we got there at 7 and most of the attractions were still closed after the storm passing. They called a supervisor or manager over who seemed reluctant to give the readmission telling me
“Just so you know…. If you stay here longer than 3 hours, you’re not supposed to get ANYTHING!”
I looked at my watch… it wasn’t even 10 yet so we were definitely there for less than 3 hours? Then he was telling me I also shouldn’t be getting a readmission due to the fact that I asked for one towards the end of the night. It wasn’t even 10 yet, we waited out the storm and walked around for nearly 2 hours trying to find open attractions, were able to do a handful at 9 o clock, then asked for it then.

I’m not sure if I was in the wrong for asking for the re-admit, or if they were unreasonably rude about it? Like… come on, I’ve been a pass member for literally 20 years, I used to get WAY more benefits in the past I’m certain. We spent money last night while the park… you already got my money for the admission ticket, what’s the harm in letting my guest come back so we can spend even more money? What is the point in making some sort of statement on how I’m technically not entitled to a readmission due to some stipulations… when they don’t even seem to apply as I was there less than 3 hours? I thought the readmission policy was there to encourage people to come out and spend money and not worry about weather and ride closures ruining their experience? After seeing that it was some sort of ordeal to get a readmission, I don’t think I’ll ever go back in the chance of rain. In the end, they still gave me the readmit… if they didn’t, I was prepared to cancel my membership on the SPOT! And never return!

Idk, maybe I’m overthinking it a little bit, but overall it seemed like most the employees there last night were annoyed and irritated by me being there. Employees in shops just sitting on the counters on their phone rolling their eyes and sighing at me when I’m asking them questions.

I had a similar experience in regards to team member attitude, but at the same time I had many encounters with helpful and happy team members.

We also managed some night marathon rides on Pantheon...I had to stop after four, it was getting intense!

We did Killarney Diner before the storm, and that was well staffed and atmospheric.

Nevermore part 2 was a big improvement over the original. I will echo Nicole's notes on the smaller rooms and tighter corridors enhancing the house. There was additional staffing from some actors from one or two of the outdoor mazes, I believe. It only added to the house. Nothing immediately looked out of place.

Inferno...was fun but lacked cohesion, not to beat a dead horse. I noticed an actor from witch in there in full costume, but there were many additional team members without costumes (likely tm's from outdoor mazes whose costumes would not fit in the new maze, so they just wore their black shirts/pants uniform).

I am looking forward to seeing DWB in the future.

Does Scary Tale Road get its own thread after its official logo is revealed?

While I’m not entirely sure what Unlimited gets, if you have free guest tickets, you should be able to get them at an entrance kiosk. If the kiosk doesn’t work, just go to Guest Services.

When it is raining, you can expect them to close all of the outdoor attractions. So, during HOS, Nevermore, KillDie, and Inferno should be open.

Pass Membet benefits have been slowly degrading over time and we have been seeing an increasing number of reports of uninformed and/or rude representatives at Guest Services.

Sorry your experience was so bad. I think that another Sunday in September is your best bet, if you want to experience the outdoor mazes (Death Water Bayou and Witch of the Woods) and the terror-tories.

So I ask the following and offer the thought as someone who does not like haunts and has not gone to HOS:

Do some around here think/feel that possible shrinking the amount of the park that gets used for HOS would help the event? It feels like based on what's getting said could be changed by having the park focus on a smaller area and pack it with good stuff.

I'm thinking like having Festa Italia -> Oktoberfest being the main area where HOS happens. Marco Polo's stage gets used for a show, put another show in Das Festhaus. Use the spaces to put the mazes/houses. Use the small area around EfP as well if you needed to.

I feel like that takes all the scare actors and puts them in a tighter space, makes HOS itself feel tighter and more intimate. Allows them to really focus on making the atmosphere as good as you can. Turn it into a split even where half the park is set with a dark and creepy tone, and the other half is set more of a "scare free" type event but still gets shows, but with a lighter tone. The 'scare free' part of the park wouldn't need elaborate dressing and sets, just some different lighting for the night.

The big scare area can then really have like 2-3 main themes. Italy/EfP can get a catacombs/Inferno deeper told story, and base it around the ride of the trapped souls of Pompeii can only escape their burning hell one way, by taking a soul for their soul. Festa Italia can keep the current scaritory theme but just make it much more in depth. Heck, DaVinci's garden could get a "Day of the Dead" type theme to it. Then Oktoberfest keeps it's current scaritory theme but again just made much more in depth. Heck if they wanted the England entry way to stay the way it is, they could use the gate by Ireland for a "no scare" entrance or just have a "no scare" path through there.

Basically...concentrate the heavily done HOS stuff into a smaller part of the park to improve the quality, but still do something throughout the park.

I think the crowding and capacity issues with the event alone prevent that from ever being a possibility. If anything, the event already isn't spread out enough from the Oktoberfest corner and is just a mob. Next year this will be even worse with DarKoaster back there.

The park is accessible year round to people who don't like haunt season, and those who just want decor with no scares get to go during the daytime. The quality of the event isn't low because it is widespread, it just doesn't have the same level of dedicated planning as some others. I don't see them changing this wildly successful formula any time soon unless it's to potentially go upcharge, and then POSSIBLY we see a quality increase if SEAS redirects some of that bonus revenue back into the event, though I doubt it.

I don't think there is a logistical way to have 5-6 house in a smaller space. If nothing else the park already struggles to find places to build them as it is. Taking away hamlets would only make it worse.

Given the historic crowds and lines for the houses, it wouldn't be feasible to reduce the number of attractions. Given that they finally seem to have figured out how to staff the mazes, I can't think of a good reason have fewer, regardless.

Really, the problem is that the paths really never seem to work. As I already expressed above, I don't think there is really a solution, other than moving away from actor-based scare zones entirely.

My preference would be to have

- Six, fully-staffed and narratively effective houses, and
- Unstaffed paths with excellent atmospherics (music, sounds, lighting, fog, etc) and creepy décor.

If the houses can build a sense of fear and the paths can simply maintain a heightened level of anxiety, I think you can have a successful event.

I can see value in having a party area in Festa that is cut off from the main loop and doesn't interfere with the rest of the haunt by breaking the mood.

My overall thought wasn’t to reduce the scope of the even in terms of number of houses, rather confine the roaming actors to a much smaller square foot area and focus on that area being heavily themed, which seems to be then we’re talking the same thing.

I was trying to think of a way to still have scare zones and the actors roaming without having the event feel sparsely staffed. Because I do feel that can add onto the atmosphere and putting set money into fewer places while using other things (soundtracks, lighting, fog machines) in others can help that. Because I do agree the tension of that would be better than an actor here or there.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I got to HOS, I'm there for HOS. If the event were confined to one or two hamlets, that's where I'd spend my time, and I'm guessing many others would as well. The park is absolutely jam packed on October nights, I can't imagine what the designated "HOS area" would be like. I totally get where you're coming from, but I just don't think it would be possible.

That being said, I'd fully support doing away with the scare zones if it meant they could redirect the funds, time, and effort to park atmospherics. That, to me, is far more important than having someone jump out of a bush at me. I would however retain the "hack pack". Having a group of the best of the best randomly roaming the park causing havoc could be effective.

Another thought on having HOS in a smaller area of say Festa and Germany is you mnight end up with the crap that Seaworld Orlando called HOS last year, a very small portion of the park housimng the event and them closing the rest of the park.

On another note....I think its shitty that the park has mixed in 2021 HOS "house" shirts in the gift shops at full price. Wonder how many people buy them and dont realize they picked up last years shirt.

For the record I’m not calling for HOS being “downsized” since that’s been said a few times. I’m calling for the really heavily themed and staffed areas to be highly focused on a few spots to optimize that aspect of the scare zones.

I think @Nicole has a great idea. The park looks amazing with the lights and fog and decor, but the actors restrict the enjoyment for many. Moving them to the houses and making the optional houses as extreme as people want then allows the paths to be accessible for anyone, even at night. I know people who would go then who don't go now. It seems like a solid way to appease the most people.
