This was my first ever Halloween event and even though I didn’t do the houses (because I’m a scaredy-cat) I have a few things to say.
The park felt pretty dead and understaffed. dead a-head and gorgan gardens only had 2 or 3 scare actors that I saw. These 2 terror-tories felt like jokes because of how unimpressive they were. scary tale road and ripper row both made me jump a few times and scary tale road sets and costumes looked great. We bypassed meat market so not much too say there, but personally it looked the scariest zone.
We mainly just went for the night rides so we spent most of our time in festa and when you were there you kinda forgot you were at a Halloween event so that was interesting. I know this is isn’t the most informative review, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out there. 🙂

I'm shocked at the lack of Twitter self promotion from @Nicole and @Zachary. Granted your silence has made me check your Twitter account so maybe that's your strategy, but the lack of plugging in this thread over the past few hours makes me think maybe you guys are on the BGW marketing team after all.

The park is always understaffed at the beginning of Howl-O-Scream, They continue to add more scare actors every week.

I thought this was really good first day! All the actors were giving it their all, and I had time to go through every house, despite arriving after 7. Definitely understaffed in some areas, but I was very, very impressed with Death Water Bayou. I wouldn’t be surprised if they shipped a bunch of stuff over from Tampa, but either way, it was great. For me, the big let down was Inferno, San Marco, and France… I’m hoping it gets better as we get deeper into the season

Can anyone please confirm which storybook characters were officially featured in Scary Tale Road?

I'm planning to go to Howl-O-Scream with my younger cousin (1 year younger than me) later this month. Tell me about your experiences when you go!

Had a great time last night. I was able to hit all the houses and scare zones and get in several rides as well.

KILLarney Diner - Well staffed, and they were giving it their all. This house was a middle-of-the-road house for me last year, though I know many people felt it was the strongest of the season last year. If you loved it then, you'll love it now.

Inferno - Again, well staffed, but overall disappointing. It just seems half-assed. Nothing really stood out. I didn't feel like it was especially well thought out or decorated. The sets were not memorable in any way for me. I still enjoyed it, but definitely one of the weaker houses for me.

Nevermore 2 - The staff when I went through were outstanding. They were really working it! I thought some of the set pieces were stronger in the original Nevermore, but it was fine thematically. Probably my favorite of the night. I went while it was still light outside, and there was a distracting amount of natural light bleeding in, but I imagine it's not an issue most of the time.

Witch of the Woods - I always thoroughly enjoy whatever maze is in this location, the atmosphere is just perfect. I also like that this maze is usually a departure from the usual jump scare heavy other mazes, relying instead on generating a sense of dread and unease. Great last year, great this year.

Death Water Bayou - It's so nice to see this location get a breath of fresh air. Circo was looking REALLY shabby last year. There are some really beautiful sets in this house. Staff did a commendable job, but there were a few areas that were pretty barren both decoration and staffing wise. Still, a solid house, and a definite improvement over Circo.

Ripper Row - It's Ripper Row. If you love it, you'll love it. I got to the park before HOS started, so I caught Ripper Row pretty late into the evening. Seemed largely unchanged.

Gorgon Gardens - The lighting is beautiful, and the staff were easily the most interactive of the night. I feel like it could use some additional decorations, and maybe something to better explain the zone, but I enjoyed it each time I went through.

Scary Tale Road - Nicely decorated, but after dark, a lot of those decorations are just kinda lost in the shadows. The staff were very active, and I probably saw the most guest scares here. Could use a little atmospheric tweaking, but overall, pretty good.

Dead Ahead - Probably the least effective area for me. Not very scary, nothing particularly interesting to look at. Mostly the actors were just walking around not doing much. I know Demon Street was much maligned, but at least there were some good scares and for my money, some of the better decorative effects.

Meat Market - It's Meat Market. It's largely unchanged. It's fine.

Overall I had a blast. I hope the park plans on adding additional decorations ove the next few weeks, the park honestly felt pretty bare. I also feel like there's less and less fog each year. There were definitely times that if the music has been off, I wouldn't have known I was at HOS. There were also stacking issues in all the houses, which is weird, since I don't think I waited more than 10 minutes or so for any house. Pleasantly, staffing didn't seem to be an issue last night. Plenty of people in houses and zones for the most part.

Overall, I thought it was great opening night. There are always adjustments that need to be made as the event continues, so hopefully things continue to get better the closer we get to October.

I saw a pig and a witch, for sure. Definitely no princesses, but they could always be added later in the season

The storybook characters in Scary Tale Road whom I have seen in YouTube footage are Bluebeard, Gretel, the Wicked Witch, Peter Pumpkin Eater, Red Riding Hood, the Pied Piper, Rumpelstiltskin, the Evil Queen, the Three Little Pigs, the Big Bad Wolf, the Little Mermaid, and Little Miss Muffet

Am I just getting old, or were there a much higher percentage of 16-and-unders there last night than usual? I feel like a "get off my lawn" gatekeeper but all but one of the houses was essentially ruined because of incredibly obnoxious kids either in front of or behind us.

@Ice: We barely had time to post the tweets last night, so linking them here was just a bridge too far. Hopefully, anyone who was interested in what we had to say was following us there anyway.

Anyway, I have some time now, so I thought I’d share my personal opinions of the first night. I fully expect the event to change over the next few weeks, as the actors get comfortable with their parts, house teams gel, and setup is completed.

Since staffing has already been raised, I‘ll start there. While I agree that the terror-tories were understaffed, the houses were full of actors. In fact, the mazes had more performers than I have seen in years. Moreover, despite its being opening day, a lot of them were already providing creative, interesting scares.

We took the HOS Behind the Scenes tour today and it made me feel even more strongly that they need to stop staffing the paths. I know this is an unpopular opinion. According to our tour guide, the best scare actors are put in the terror-torie, because those positions require the performer to use a larger space, function alone, and deal creatively with a more dynamic and chaotic environment. Even Halloween Horror Nights essentially turns its scare zones into photo ops and party zones. SWO last year came the closest for me to providing an interesting and scary experience on the paths. Perhaps the problem is the crowd sizes at BGW? There are just too many people for individual actors to be able to have any impact on how scary a path is. So, if even their best actors can’t make terror-tories work, perhaps it just isn’t reasonable to try to have path scares at BGW.

To me, the paths just need to be able to sustain the tension and fear as guests travel from house to house. That can be done with atmospherics alone. Well designed lighting, sound, music, props, etc can make a space incredibly creepy. I do not need people in costumes or wielding chainsaws to maintain a level of anxiety around the park. So, since scare zones really don’t seem to work at BGW, I really wish they would just stop wasting their best actors on the paths.

I know it was the first day so, I am not willing to draw any real conclusions about the houses. That said, I do have some initial thoughts, which I will put in the individual house threads. Overall, here is my opening night ranking, from best to worst:

1. Killarney Diner
2. Nevermore Chapter 2
3. Death Water Bayou
4. Inferno
5. Witch of the Woods

We didn’t have enough time after dark to experience all of the terro-tories fully. I do, however, have a few initial thoughts.

Scary Tale Road was really well done and the actors were fantastic. I loved the design and how much of an effort everyone was making.

Gorgon Gardens, however, was incredibly frustrating. It is such a fantastic concept: a Greco-Roman monster fits perfectly in the area and using a classical myth is just brilliant. The execution the first night just failed, unfortunately. There was virtually no theming or placemaking. We saw only two gorgons. And there was zero storytelling. It could have been just as good as Ripper Row, if they had used Medusa’s story. Where was Perseus? Why wasn’t the garden decorated with sets? Why were people able to walk right past the terror-tory without noticing it’s existence? I wanted to be immersed in an ancient myth.

I went through everything between 6 and 7:30 since I had to be somewhere by 8. I managed to get every house out of the way and here’s my ranking. Keep in mind this all when it was still day out

1. Killarney Diner
2.Nevermore Chapter 2
3.Death Water Bayou
4. Witch of the Woods
5. Inferno

I didn’t hate any houses I just felt inferno lacked demons and was just tortured souls. I can only hear “please help me” and “please get me
Out of here” so many times before it’s old. Plus I felt the sets were either clear reused sets from dystopia or bland walls. Only room that stood out was the green room. Everything else felt dark and uninteresting. I think some cool lighting effects would make the maze feel better. It is just missing something.

As far as scare zones meat market is feeling bigger and more decorated. It and scary tale road are tied for my favorites this year. I had a bad run through gorgon grotto so I’ll check back in a few nights.

The few scare actors in dead ahead were very fun to watch playing up the campy aristocratic mannerisms. I think when they get more people it’ll be a fun scarezone based entirely on actors. The cake is a nice touch.

All in all for an opening day, it was remarkably well staffed and quality compared to what we’ve had in the last few years. We finally have a good scare zone in Germany and staffing levels for the houses are the best they’ve ever been. I’d say it’s a good event this year and my issues are very minor.

I had a great time hanging out with the crew last night. It was a lot of fun.

I didn't really get to do the scare zones last night. It was mostly mazes and rides.

From worst to first
Witch of the Woods - I noticed a lot fewer set pieces than last year. Maze felt a lot shorter staffed than last year. Also the line setup having to walk behind the Festhaus is terrible.

Inferno - Actors were pretty solid. Set design was ehh. Deadline still has the best sets of all the mazes that were in here. They should've at least kept some of the animatronics.

Dead Water Bayou - This is probably my favorite maze that's in this spot. That being said, its nowhere near as pretty as its older sister in Tampa. Some of the tents still look like tents from the outside, so that messes with the immersion. They did do a good job building the shack facade at least. Interior set design was hit-miss in spots.

Killarney Diner - I'm glad this maze came back. Its still as fun as ever. That being said, the hallway at the end should have actors so its not a long, dead hallway.

Nevermore - Usually whatever maze the park puts in here ends up being the best set wise and scare wise. They did a great job with the setup, even building a facade on the side of the building. Set design was a major highlight for me. The ending is still a tad on the weak side. I just remember walking through endless curtains.

Overall not a bad start to the season. Things can only get better from here. I did notice the mazes were a bit less staffed than they were last year. That's pretty normal for this time of year so it wasn't a serious issue.

Also did the lights on tour of Killarney Diner today. It was awesome.

I'll probably be back at the park again next weekend to do scare zones and revisit the better mazes.

Last night was probably the least crowds i’ve ever seen on a opening night of HOS…..ever and i’ve been to quite a few. The longest we waited was about 10 minutes and most were walk ons. The houses were very well staffed at least what we saw. I also realize that the staffing levels are very inconsistent and a house I saw full
of actors could be empty a few minutes later.

Nevermore was fun. Inferno was very unimpressive today. Same with Bayou. There were rooms with no visible actors in them and we overheard a scare actor with their phone out say "oh shit, people are coming through". The 5pm headstart time for members was nice, was able to get through all the new mazes before 6.
