I was at the park today and rode Flight of Fear, and I am very happy to report that the lighting situation has been brought back to its former glory! In other words, most of the blue lights on the ground were turned off, so only a single set of blue and green lights barely lit up the track in front of the train! It really has a much more powerful, disorienting, and thematic effect. Thanks for restoring FoF, Kings Dominion! It really does make it much better.

hmmm..... it was fully lit during my visit on the 23rd. Makes me think that some lights are just burnt out and they just haven't replaced the bulbs yet.

My visit at the beginning of the year consisted of the queue line be completely dark minus all the spaceship lights and other spot lights and the track was brightly lit with many lights.

I have a question. Every time we go to KD, there is a REALLY long line. If the line is out of the building, is it worth the wait? Merci beaucoup. (Thanks a lot)

Incredibly weird, Evan. Weird because the queue was lit up substantially brighter than usual. So bright it was nearly as bright as some restaurants at the park. On the other hand, you could really see all the detail in the queue...including those creepy, apparently man-eating aliens in the first room. Creepy. :s

If the line is out of the building, then generally it won't be a super long wait as long as operators are pushing trains out. I seem to go on really good days and operators are flying on FoF. But yes, it's worth it.

I also updated my other post.

Phew, good thing Cedar Fair bought the park when they did. Paramount thought about re-theming FOF to MTV Soundwave. They even released concept art but it was too late.

A park high-up told me a few months ago that Paramount planned to remove Flight of Fear from Kings Dominion and send it to another Paramount park (Canada's Wonderland, I believe?). This was supposed to happen in some year after Cedar Fair ended up buying the park, which is why it never actually happened. Its removal would have involved opening up the ceiling and removing the track from the building piece-by-piece to ensure the ride's safe transportation to another park. This does have to make me wonder what would have happened with Flight of Fear's land, though.

That was an option but the park sent out a survey and the Soundwave re-theme won the vote. But what would be there today if they did remove FOF. I mean that is a huge plot of land. They could've put a Top Gun section back there.

Paramount was great at making detailed attractions. But they never stuck to the theme of an area when they did build their attractions, which helped lead to a decline of the park. There are many other factors to what their business goals seemed to be.

I think it is a possibility that some of the special effects lighting / soundtrack, that still works, could have been shut off or altered for the Haunt Maze inside this fall (even during the ride's operating hours).

Secondly, most of the special effects were tied to the indoor queue video. The theme was the military/scientists doing lab tests on the flying saucer at some secret facility. They would do a destructive test with a laser and there would be a power surge and the lights would all dim inside.

The finale was a crazed guy going and plugging in some sort of power source to the saucer. The vehicle would come to life and the special effects were smoke machines going off under the saucer and strobe lights flashing and LED lights pulsing on the edge of the saucer. I thought they had some sort of "laser" light going off at the entrance to the saucer. It was some neat special effects to take your mind off the wait.

I think I found the full preshow that used to play in Flight of Fear's queue.

I'd love to see some sort of actual preshow brought back to the coaster's queue. I have a feeling the above video is legally tied to the Outer Limits and/or Paramount, but maybe a new video could be produced? With a little effort, a new video could be made on a fairly low budget.

I know, I know- it won't happen. But Flight of Fear is one of the best-themed attractions in the park, and the pop music videos on Fun TV don't quite cut it as an adequate pre-show.

But, hey. At least we have this relic from a now-distant era.

Edit: Apparently this video was found eons ago by another forum member. My apologies.

I honestly would rather have nothing on the TV over Fun TV, it kills the atmosphere of the queue. It'd also be great if they would take down Lockdown, I would love to be able for the full indoor queue to be utilized instead of the switch backs outside. Still, FOF is probably one of the best themed attractions at KD if not the best.
