RE: Fiends (2011 to Present)

Saw Fiends Saturday and the raunch was prevelant. Interestingly a family with five children under 10 were there and one small boy said this was his favorite show! Oh, well! We felt the singers (from NY) were no improvement over last year's regulars. The acting was a bit better and the overall effect, too. Still our number 3 show.

Haven't seen DOC around on the forums in a while so I'll say something on this point. Say what you want about the show, but let's refrain from making judgements on parents and their choices with their children. Dangerous territory. Right DOC? :D

RE: Fiends (2011 to Present)

I don't know, when I see obviously clueless parents at HOS with very small kids who are scared nearly witless, I can't help but judge. When I'm sitting at a late show with a two year old sitting directly behind me throwing a screaming tantrum because they should be at home in bed, I definitely judge. I wouldn't judge a parent for taking a young kid to Fiends because of the 'adult' content, though. For most of human history, children shared a bed, hut, tent, or wigwam with their parents every night. In light of this, our modern obsession with shielding children from 'adult' content strikes me as slightly ridiculous.

People also used to get married at 16. As a society we artificially extend "childhood" well past puberty. People are postponing marriage well into their 30s, in many cases because of school and careers. Obviously, some of our modern notions of protecting children from sex comes from the Victorians, but it is also, I believe, a consequence of the need to postpone adulthood.

I do not think it is valid to criticize current mores and cultural norms, based on the the practices of entirely different cultures.

RE: Fiends (2011 to Present)

This evening, at least in the show I saw at 2:30, there was a new/stand-in wolf. And he also had a new pair of cutoff shorts. I guess the other pair either didn't fit or they were getting too ripped up the thighs. :p

I love it when "Simplicity" smacks the $h!utz out of the Doctor with those work gloves. :)

RE: Fiends (2011 to Present)

The lead diva actually does smack the Doctor with the glove in some shows. (I haven't been able to sit in on rehearsals this year, but that really was put in the script. When she holds the glove length-wise, she's hitting the back of his head rather than the side of his face.)

Yes, Zach Page had a swing-performer in his place for some performances this past weekend.

Maybe he had two mikes because of all the technical troubles they've had with them recently, Todd.

That actually does make very good sense.

Something interesting of note: The backup Simplicity was in the 9pm Sunday show. The one we mentioned earlier, with the New Jersey/Long Island accent. I took particular note that she kept the accent going through her songs this performance. A nice improvement.

On the down side, they were still short one nurse on Sunday. I'm a bit surprised that there aren't enough extras to cover for when someone gets sick. Unless a few of them were out...

Am I the only one putting two and two together and noticing that this Perry Sook guy's headshot looks nothing like the Doctor we have now? Or am I just losing my mind?

Like seriously they look like completely different human beings.

I'm confused.

Yes they look like two different people, but I am assuming its the hair. It really changes a persons face.

RE: Fiends (2011 to Present)

Ended up making a completely unexpected visit to the park last night and watched the last two shows of the evening. For the 8:30 show, the house was jam packed. The whole front bench was reserved for cast members from one of the other shows or houses. I'm not sure where they were from, as I would have thought I'd have recognized them if they were from Dig It Up, or Night Beats. Anyhow, the onstage cast knew them and pulled out all the stops. It was a fantastic show. Craziness akin to a "last show". Only drawback was the replacement werewolf and still missing nurse(s).

The 10pm show wasn't quite as crowded, and didn't go so well. The mics for BOTH the doctor and Simplicity died, and they had to use handheld mics. No one who hadn't seen the show multiple times would have caught it, but the long-suffering look that the doctor and Igor shared when Igor had to fetch the handheld mic was heartbreaking. They carried it off well, but something was missing. The doctor's normal performance has a lot of wild gestures and arm waving, and with one hand always having to hold the mic to his face, a lot of the flamboyance was gone. They had to cut Simplicity's whole "Happy Halloween to me!" line because she couldn't carry her mic to pick up the line.

BGW, replace the freakin' wireless mics already! It's ridiculous to invest so much money in a show and have it lessened by malfunctioning technology.

That said, I enjoy so much watching this show sitting next to people who haven't seen it before. (Fiends virgins.) You wouldn't think people could get so jazzed up about the nurses throwing off their cloaks or the creature ripping off his clothes, but they whoop it up every time. It's awesome. And the stuff the nurses are doing in the background is getting better and better. I was totally cracked up by the nurses having an extended "swordfight" in the background with those lambs wool duster sticks. It started with two of them whacking each other in the face repeatedly, then spilled over into the other nurses. Priceless.

Another new favorite is when the first failed animation attempt fails and one nurse expresses her disappointment by burying her face in the cleavage of another. That used to be the extent of the bit, but last night when the first nurse recovered, the second nurse proceeded to very thoroughly "clean the makeup" from her exposed bosom. Very thoroughly. I'm not really sure what else was going on in that scene.

I'm hoping that the regular full cast recovers from whatever bug is laying them low. With missing dancers, the "wall of nurses" just isn't the same.

RE: Fiends (2011 to Present)

Caught the 1pm showing today, and it was much better than when I saw it on the 28th of last month. The only problems was with the Doctor and Simplicity, they didn't seem to be into sing Thriller, and Simplicity didn't seem to be into doing the dance. Most of the jokes with in the first half of the show fell completely flat. And during the finale, one of the mics kept making a popping noise. But over all it was a huge improvement over the show I first saw (Which was also a 1pm showing).

However, my dad ended up catching the next show, and he told me that the Doctor's and Simplicity's mic cut out during Thriller. At least one nurse was out of sync with the others during the dances, during a few parts of the show. He mentioned another mic cut out as well, but I can't remember for who.

I'm really concerned that these mics keep cutting out like this. :/ It's a rather big problem.

I saw the 9pm show tonight and the Vampire's mic started cutting out and popping.

RE: Fiends (2011 to Present)

Anyone going to film and post all the shows as they are performing now? To compare to the opening shows up now? I figured I'd just ask in one thread.

Has anyone thought about trying to get all finales (DIU, Fiends, NB) recorded?
IF that is even possible with the schedules they run?
