I hate EitA. That doesn't mean I think they should just shut it down and have an empty ride building without telling anyone or repurposing the space (or even announcing a new purpose for the space). And if it is closed because they can't afford to run it...man.

I'd rather have EitA run forever than to hear that the park had to shut it down because they couldn't afford it.

Get rid of EitA and replace it with something better vs. Shutter the building without announcement to save money. I think there's a significant difference in those two positions.

New HOS Night Care Center!!! Just shove the kids into the pre-boarding room and put on some movies, or sit them in the ride theater and watch stuff on there! Strap 'em in and shut the doors!

The following story, or wall of text to come, is usually frowned upon in online communities, but I think this one is worth reading. That being said, let me make something absolutely clear; this is a story as told to me by a good buddy of mine. The fact that he is often mistaken for me is inconsequential. OK, here it goes...

ChickenHawk told me that he blew off work this morning to go to Busch Gardens. Said he REALLY wanted to ride EITA for some reason. I think he was going to test out closing his eyes for the whole 5 minutes or whatever to see if it was the motion of the simulator making him sick to his stomach on occasion. Sadly, we may never know. Why you say? Well, he said that the ride is apparently closed. How long? I dunno. Answer towards the end of this story.

ChickenHawk stopped at the Guest Services desk, next to Mr. Toad, and asked if all of the rides were operating today so that he could plan his way through the park. The nice lady at the counter made two calls and then said that ALL rides were open. "Yes!! EITA, here I come!!", he said. Anyway, when he arrived to the ride building there was nobody there to greet him like normal. The door to the catacombs was also NOT open. He stood there and waited a minute or two, not sure what to do, because he REALLY wanted to ride this thing. After a few minutes, several guests opened the door and walked in. There was no sign saying "RIDE CLOSED" or any other message to that effect. The door was simply not open and there was no attendant to welcome you. So, ChickenHawk worked up the courage to go in. What did he see you ask? Read on.

The tunnels were lit up like they normally are. They ever-so-glorious and encouraging music tracks were blasting over the speakers. There was no indication that the ride was not working...until he reached the yellow line. The line where you stand outside the closed doors to the briefing room. Something was strange though. The door was wide open, but the room was dark. No lights, no attendant. He peaked inside. The doors to both of the waiting rooms, the ones with the lights on the floor, were wide open as well. ChickenHawk grew a little braver and stuck his head inside of the "sled" or simulator room. The lights were on, but nobody was around. The movie was not being projected. What is going on?

He went back to the area with the yellow line, and there were about 20 guests becoming restless. Most were irritated that there was no employee telling them what was going on. A few even dared to enter the briefing room. After a couple of minutes waiting around, one of the guests had gone out to Ireland and found an employee who came into the area where they had been waiting. He had no answers. But after another two or three minutes, everyone left...except ChickenHawk and the employee. He wanted answers. EITA is his favorite ride and the Guest Services office said that ALL rides were operating today. The employee seemed nervous. He knew nothing. After another minute, he left and said he'd be back. ChickenHawk was alone.

After a few minutes of entertaining himself, he heard some voices. But they were not from the direction he was expecting. They seemed to be coming from the simulator room. He stuck his head in and came face to face with... another employee!! This one seemed to be some kind of ride technician or something. He tried to be courteous, but was clearly irritated. He asked ChickenHawk how he got in. He told the guy "Through the front door where guests usually come in. A bunch of us did. There was no sign or any indication this thing was closed." The tech guy said he wondered why anyone would come in when the door was closed. ChickenHawk replied, "Well, just like the bathroom I guess. Sometimes the door is closed. You have to open it to go in. If there is a sign saying CLOSED or if there is a rope, chain, or some employee telling you otherwise, it is usually safe to assume that what is behind the door is still accessible by guests." The guy was getting noticeably irritated now.

Next he wanted to know what party ChickenHawk (CH) was with, where were the other people, and why didn't he leave when they left. He said, "I'm not with a party. All of the other guest left...most were upset. And I stayed because I wanted an answer about being able to ride this thing or not. No one told me to get out. As a matter of fact, the other employee said he would be right back to assist me." This was clearly the answer he didn't want to hear. He said that ChickenHawk would have to exit the building. CH told him "No problem", but then asked when will the ride be open. The tech guy said it would be closed all day. CH said, "So the ride will be open tomorrow? I came to park expecting to ride it. Guest Services said ALL rides were open. It's the first thing I ride every visit, just like Nessie is the the last thing I ride." The tech guy said it won't be open tomorrow either. Then, pre-empting his next question, he said it won't be open for a long time. And with that, he escorted CH to the exit that lets you out next to the bathrooms near O'Sullivan Castle.

As CH returned to Killarney, he walked back over towards EITA. There was a surprising amount of people waiting in line for it. Clearly they knew nothing either. However, there was now an employee in a white shirt standing guard where they usually greet you by the door. Groups of people walked off very irritated. Other groups came, waited and left. All seemed very annoyed. Some comments that were overheard: "This sucks!" "We should get our money back." I can't believe I don't get to ride my favorite ride again!" This went on and on while the ChickenHawk watched patiently from a table near the pub. A smile formed slowly across his lips.

And that's the story!! I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Thanks ChickenHawk for sharing it with me buddy! He said he had pictures too. Wow! This guy is awesome!! Don't forget to thank him & rep+ him if you appreciate his work (ChickenHawk). I know I do. He also asked that we respect his privacy, so please don't bug him about piddly stuff. He likes to keep things low key. He is a man who prefers to be behind the scenes...the curtains if you will (like the Wizard of Oz). Stay tuned! More to come...

Zachary, you need to give sources or more details. The kind of reporting you're pulling here is pretty sketch and has served no other purpose than to get people riled up. A report should create more reactions than speculation. At the very least, please justify to me how and why closing EiTA would make a significant impact on the park's cash flow. Prove to us that the park is in financial trouble instead of just refocusing itself like any normal business should when things aren't as successful as they expected.

And who's to say they won't repurpose the space. Of course they will. No one rode EiTA. No one cares about it. You all hated it. Stop acting like it needed some big fanfare going out (which you would inevitably mock).

Of course they'll reuse the space. Some day. But not July 2. Or July 3. And there's no mention of what will become of it.

Are you arguing that it's a good or normal thing for the park to permanently close rides at random, with no public notification, and no mention of replacements or future park offerings? Because if so, we just have a different opinion of how a theme parks should operate.

^^^^
Maybe it's because he CAN'T do that just yet.....

I've worked in the media & I can tell you, unconfirmed reports are the hardest thing to report on because you have stuff you want to tell people, but can't give every single detail out yet because it hasn't been cleared w/your source. It's frustrating...

The one thing I feel like is the most unfortunate aspect of all of is that EitA was a family ride. The young kids that were too old for Sesame Street and too young for major coasters have few "middle kid" rides to enjoy. This was one of them.

I'm shocked that it just closed without warning. EitA was one of my least favorite rides in the park, but it was still a "big ride" and the only ride in Ireland.

Now if Grogan's Pub shuts down... there will be a real Killarney Kommotion to worry about!

Don't even try to tell me that you really care about EiTA being closed so quickly. You hate it. We all hate it. We all said the sooner the better or that it never should have opened anyways. And no, there won't be a replacement the day after a ride closes....Guys, closing unpopular rides without notice is commonplace in the theme park world. These things happen. Not having EiTA is not a bad thing and you all know it and you all also know that had they given notice you wouldn't ride it.

And I mean, I hear you Indy, but I've been here a long time and there's a right way to report about things when you can't out a source and a wrong way. I definitely think this way was the wrong way. But hey....I guess it's doing its job....we're talking about it.

I'd love to say "Here's the long list of people and the positions they hold that have told me all about what's happening" but guess what, doing that would get a nice long list of people fired. Anyone is free to believe whatever it is that they believe. Proving why a ride closed to a bunch of people on the internet isn't worth getting a bunch of my sources fired. I'd trade the entire site to prevent just one person from losing their job.

Look at Pirates 4d... they announced that closing. They even had signs taken down right after the final showing. EITA was announced on the site that it wouldn't be reopening for the remainder of the season and so far all the signs are still up at this point in time. It shows how quickly this was announced to not only us, but the employees.

I don't think that's what I asked for haha. I said prove to me that closing EiTA makes a significant impact for the park's financials. And please. You spent FAR too much time proving things to people on the internet already ;)

Quite honestly, I don't think it does which is why, if this was a shutdown to prepare for a new addition or because of low ridership, there's no reason why it shouldn't have operated through the end of this year unless the park is trying to cut everything. As I said previously, this is far from the only operations cut and far from the only cut being made throughout the park as a whole. They're digging in the dirt for pennies at this point.

Precisely. It's a refocusing and makes room for new additions. It isn't because the park is in serious financial hardship. They're not "wasting" money anymore in the excessive spending that Busch was known for. This isn't them about to go bankrupt, it's them being smart business people. The ownership change is still new and we should expect them to try things and cut the fat a little.

You really implied that the park was in some serious financial trouble Zach hence all the speculation and craziness.

Do we know it was planned? Isn't it possible that something broke on EitA, and the park, already looking for places to save money, said, "You know what, let's just take this opportunity to cut our losses, rather than bring the ride back online."

And yet, there will be fireworks tonight.

What is this, Canada? Are we celebrating Canada Day at the park, tonight? Come on.

I presume they don't make their own fireworks, which means they likely already ordered them, or entered into a contract to have them delivered and launched. May as well shoot 'em off if they've already paid for them or committed to.

Now I'm all for closing EitA, I hated the ride, and it made me sick riding it, so there is no love lost from me. (And you're right, I wouldn't go ride it one last time.) However, how they went about closing it is the big issue here.

BG has signs at the two entrances from the parking lot letting you know what rides are are not operating that day, or at closing early. There was no mention of EitA on said sign. (I'm assuming, going by the story CK gave us.) Guest Relations said all rides were operating. And there was nobody standing out front to let people know "Hey the ride is closed, sorry."

It's okay for the park to give no notification that the ride is suddenly closed, it's their park, they can do what they want with it. However, what's not okay is not to give any warnings at any of the known locations to find out if the ride is operating. That is the big issue at hand, and why people are upset. They did it without any sort of notification.

Yes, theme parks shut down areas or rides that are unpopular at any time because of various reasons, but there is at the minimum somebody there to tell you "Hey this is closed, sorry for the inconvenience." And to hopefully give an estimate as to when it will open back up, if it's planned to open back up again.

But, shutting down the ride right at the real start of peak season... That's a bit suspicious to those who tend to know the inside workings of the park. The GP won't notice, all they care about is if the ride is open or not.

This! EitA may have been a bad ride, but it still filled a gap as a mild adventure ride.

That said, it should be noted that my mid-80-year-old grandparents visited the park with me last week (who like DarKastle-level rides and slower, plus shows), and they even decided Europe in the Air was boring and wasn't worth it (having ridden it about twice two years ago!). That should tell you something.

Getting to the money standpoint again, just because they decided to close it to cut costs doesn't mean they're going broke. Look at it this way:

An average park-goer lives smack between Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion. He isn't sure about which park he should go to. Then he remembers the neatest ride he'd ever been on, the Loch Ness Monster. So he packs his wallet, drives to Busch Gardens, and forks over his money, excited that he'll get to do the Loch Ness Monster. Even though I'm just using this as an example, hear me out. Europe in the Air wasn't something that actually pulled guests into the gate. Our friend the average park-goer isn't going to say, "Shoot! Europe in the Air is closed...guess we're going to Kings Dominion!" He's more likely to say, "Oh, that's a bit of a shame. On to Griffon?" Europe in the Air was there as another, fresher thing to do in the park, not something to rope the money in...that's the job of Verbolten and Mach Tower (one of which doesn't like to fulfill its job).

As JuniorBGWFan said in another thread, every time a ride operates, it costs money: money for maintenance, money for staffing, money for operating the mechanics of the ride. So when said ride isn't bringing the money in to make the money put into the ride worth it, there's no point. It's like making lemonade more 50 cents and selling it for 25, if that makes cents...uh, sense. I guess they figured there was no point in spending money on an attraction that wasn't making money, since nobody truly liked it.

So yes, in my opinion, they did close they ride due to its lack of popularity...but only because this didn't help matters financially, if that makes sense.

EDIT: This thread is being responded to so quickly I can't even keep up when I post! I was aiming this at the discussion up to around Nora's post.

This sounds like the most viable explanation.

Oh my goodness, last night I rode it at 8:15, and the park closed at 9. I can't believe it, I rode in one of the last 3 rides. And the sad thing was that, I was the only one riding it other than a group of 4.

The even sadder thing is that the park had to shut it down because they couldn't afford it. How come they can't afford it? Are we putting too much money somewhere else? This scares me. I almost feel like the entertainment department is driving us to the point where we can't operate rides. I mean they've spent, and are going to spend a lot of money this year. I feel like very soon they are going to make the cut between Entwined, and TIO. And knowing who's in charge I have a feeling about which one they are going to cut.

I've always wanted to see EITA go, but never because they can't afford it. I'm finally seeing how bad our financial issues are.

Oh!! I was wondering why an employee dressed in a EITA uniform was checking harnesses at LNM, maybe he's getting transferred there.
