1/4 inch thick sheets of steel, with a diamond plate pattern, is what I 'thought' it was. Not sure what these other cats are calling it.

Mazakman, I don't know, it sure doesn't look like standard diamond plate steel. In fact, it looks like they just used pieces of that same open mesh seen at the top of the picture and tacked some thin sheeting to the back of it so you wouldn't be able to see through down to the ground...

They probably made that pattern when the metal was initially poured into it's molding. They have to have some sort of "traction" up there so people don't flip and slide everywhere.

You're right jonquil. It does look strange. After looking at your photo, I would say with some amount of certainty that a layer of the mesh seen on the bottom portion of the wall in the photo, has been tack welded to a sheet of metal and then painted. As Evan said, this is most likely for traction and has been painted so many times that It looks like shiznit. My daughter jumps up and down on it when we go up there to freak everybody out(including myself), so that makes it safe :)

Edit...OMG! What if they did just have a mesh floor so that you could see straight down!

As you stated, that floor is solid sheet metal with a tread pattern.

The Tower is in bad need of a cleaning and paint job. It is about 4-5 years past due as the park did repaint it every 10 years and it is now going on 14-15 years since the last paint job. I hope that this years earnings shortfall does not delay this, (and the Rebel Yell paint job), any longer. Mr. Quimet did state, in the last quarter earnings call, that Cedar Fair could cut back on the maintenance budget for next year to make up for that shortfall. He was referring to cosmetic refurbishments; not anything to due with safety of the rides and attractions. So who knows if things will be delayed another year.

UPDATE: Yeah, great idea, that glass deck!

Great for an INDOOR thrill. Not so much for an exposed observation deck

Any and all sheet metal is extruded(the forcing of metal between rollers, or through shapes usually round, square, or rectangle during its cooling process). There is no way to pour metal into a mold shallow enough to make sheet metal. It is possible that 1 roller used in the extrusion process had this cross pattern in it, but that would be very expensive compared to attaching the patterned piece later by welding. Either way, the annealing process cannot be skipped during this extrusion process which rules out a molded piece of sheet metal. I'm a metal nerd :)

I took a few cool Eiffel Tower shots. They're nothing spectacular, but they're not what you get to see every day. :)
