RE: Dig it Up (2012 to Present)
After having seen Dig It Up five times over two weekends now, I think I can finally criticize it a bit with confidence. Here are the things I would like to see improved...
1 - The horn section. It has been said multiple times that the horns are weak. It was only today that I finally saw more than one trumpet. The new trumpets and trombones keep jumping the gun pretty regularly in certain spots of the performance. And the trumpet(s) keep losing it on very high notes in some songs. It is cringe-inducing for me.
2 - The Alien. Though this is rather minor for the show, it still bugs me to death. The head of the alien is clearly either wearing out or is simply too heavy to support its shape while moving around. It practically flops over and sinks. Then there is the eye, mouth & nose slits in the mask. It is very distracting to be able to see the obvious human face underneath. I don't know if it is a result of the previous comment, or is the performer just not wearing some black spot makeup underneath to help maintain the illusion. Plus, the alien hands are losing their green color. I guess through wear and tear the color has worn off, particularly around the wrists. It is human-flesh-colored.
3 - The inflatable Earth. Out of 5 shows, this thing only inflated properly and with enough speed only once. It is either getting hung up on something, or the blowers are not strong enough, or maybe it is the cooler air making it more difficult to inflate. In any event, this happened all season last year. Either start inflating one song sooner to give it more time to fully inflate properly, or get better blowers or something.
That being said, I still LOVE this show! It was in a constant back & forth contest for first place with Night Beats last season for me. This year, NB is the clear winner thus far. I have adapted to the new routines, particularly for the cavemen (and cavegirl), even though I prefer the show in its original form. I think the standout horn player is the saxophonist with the blackened & flower-etched saxophone, and the cavegirl is as awesome as ever!
BTW, lots of NB vampires in the house this afternoon...
