Zachary, Luke, and I went to CT on Friday to check out the new stuff.  I have not had time to share my impressions before now, so I apologize for the delay.

The bottom line is that BGW was charming.

First, despite (apparently false/exaggerated) rumors we heard about swaths of lights being out, I thought the park was lovely and, in fact, had more decorations than in the past.  San Marco especially stood out to me as being dramatically improved with new lights on the paths and in the shops.

I'm not sure how I feel about all of the changes at the Polar Pathway.  While I prefer the white lights on the icebergs, I miss the green and purple trees; I found the monochromatic replacements to be "heavier" for lack of a better word.  There was a delicacy to the old design that was missing on Friday.

I also missed the twinkling lights that previously punctuated the trees on Heatherdowns.  That said, I still adore the suspended star globes.

We rode the Skyride around the entire loop twice during the night, and with the exception of Land of Dragons, the view was enchanting.  We also walked the entire loop, and I was particularly struck this year by how beautiful the park really is at CT.  We went to Hershey last weekend, and to Dollywood last year.  Neither park can hold a candle to BGW in terms of decor, in my opinion.  Probably because of the Old World theming, the park simply lends itself to gorgeous holiday displays.

We will post separately about the new cookie shop, as we tried everything.

The new Rudolph  movie was really clever.  The integrated 4D effects worked really well; the lights were brilliantly synched with the movie; and the venue was cleverly themed, right down to the snow banks for the kids to sit in.

I have mixed feelings about the new Santa's Workshop.  I never went to the original space, so I can't compare them.  I believe the new version was very well done.  The stables were clever, and the decorations were great. Unfortunately, they incorporated a lot of DK's decor, and on Friday we were already seeing signs of destruction.  People had ripped the wallpaper. Posters had been screwed into existing portraits. Guests simply had to much access to DK's walls and effects.

It is probably worth noting that there is a new Nativity set up in the shop in Rhinefeld.

So, I have a few complaints, but I want to re-emphasize that I had a wonderful time Friday.

1. The number of specialty CT dishes has dropped dramatically.  There was honestly nothing other than the doughnuts and the cookies that I wanted to try.

2. The light show in front of the Festhaus has been redone, and not for the better.  The lights no longer match the energy and pacing of the music.  In fact, there were sections that simply lacked any musicality at all.  Blinking to the beat is not the same thing as creating a light display that matches the soundtrack.

3. Some of the minor changes to the decor were also disappointing.  The lights that used to crown the towers in LotD were moved to some nearby trees. It makes some sense, since that area is closed, and the North Pole has moved, but it used to be one of the prettiest parts of the Skyride.  The loss of the twinkling lights in Heatherdowns and the purple and green trees at the Polar Pathways were also an unfortunate choices, in my opinion.

All of that said, I believe overall the event has improved.  I can't comment on the shows, of course.

I'm confused about Santa's Workshop. Is it now something that a very not-with-kids, not buying the photo man would enjoy?

I found the entire experience awkward, but I suppose other adults might enjoy it?

It is essentially the classic Mall Santa set-up. You walk through the stables and his house, until you get to a room with Santa sitting in a chair. I imagine the kids tell him what they want for Christmas and get a photo taken? Then you exit through Frostbite.

Along the way you interact with Mrs. Claus and several elves.

I can't think of why anyone would want to stand in line for it, but maybe people like that as adults?

I'm extremely interested in the setup of Santa's Castle(?). Is there more than one Santa now and how does queuing distribution of the guests to the multiple Santa's work? I'd love to see photos of the setup if anyone thought to take any.

We are hoping to go this weekend!!

Horrible to hear about the loss of the cool light-show/musical show outside of Festhaus =(

I think I have like a 5 minute or so video of the light show from last year on an old camera I'll have to retrieve and put on YouTube or something I guess for the memories.

(Meant to post this earlier but couldn't because of the forum downtime.)

I'd like to point out that putting Santa's Workshop in DarKastle looks... forced, to say the least.

It is still obviously a scary castle. The poor wolf statues may have been removed (RIP), but it is still clearly haunted palace. The spooky architecture, from the icy wrought iron gates to the gothic stone arches to the spooky carvings and insignia to the chilling Ludwig family crest... all make Santa's house decidedly creepy. I made my way up to the first queue house and still felt like I was queuing up for a chilling dark ride. If it's true that the ghostly trees in the ride's first room are still uncovered, staring down children as they go to meet Mr. Kringle... that is bewildering, and embarrassing.

The far and few strings of garland, the cartoony entrance sign, relocated North Pole pole, and Howl-O-Scream hallway don't create a welcoming atmosphere for meeting Santa Claus. They don't replicate the quaint, charming abode that Mr. C once had in the Wilkommenhaus. They present an awkward, charmless, and upsetting bastardization of the remains of one of the most innovative rides in the nation.

I saw two families exiting the queue line with crying children. While two families are hardly representative of the thousands of families who experience the attraction, that any child is ridden with fear on their way to meet Santa should be a huge wakeup call to the park that something is seriously wrong.

Personally, I think it is saddest that the groundbreaking Curse of DarKastle has been reduced to being a grossly shoehorned Christmas photo op.

There is still a light show. It has been reprogrammed, and in the process ruined, in my opinion.

And there was no ham ANYWHERE. WTH Busch Gardens. It's Christmas....add some ham to the menu. Aside from that I had a good time.

My folks have decided to go to Williamsburg this weekend. We are going to CT tomorrow. This will be our second trip to CT since it began. I hope it will be a good experience for us.

What I meant by what was said was that it's "horrible to hear about the loss of the cool light-show / horrible to hear that the new light-show isn't as cool" haha I knew what you meant. Horrible to hear all around.

Here is a video of some of the highlights of Santa's Workshop. I didn't expect to take a video so soon, so please excuse the quality.

And here are a few photos.

Can I use my platinum or friends and family pass to go through employee parking gate and park in England during Christmastown this year?
