Quick food report:
Crawfish Etouffee: (9/10) great flavor, some kick, good portion, served hot, generous with the bugs. By far the best dish I tried.
Crawfish dip: (6/10) taste was tangy in a slightly unpleasant way, don’t know if they used cream cheese as the base but that was basically the consistency (would have preferred more spreadable). Made up for with good seasoning and, again, plenty of the bugs. Crackers were generic and fine.
Blackened chicken: (4/10) overcooked and underseasoned. Points come from the fact my kid ate it right up.
Crawfish Boil: (1/10) no flavor to speak of. Tossed it.
Beignets at café lulu: (9/10) warm and fluffy, what could go wrong? They didn’t disappoint, and we were even allowed to take them on the skyride.
Doberge cake: (7/10) having tried its predecessor, Dobos Torte, in Hungary, a decade ago and searching for it ever since, I was looking forward to trying BGW’s take on NO’s spin on the cake. My expectations were lowered accordingly and they were thankfully met. The cake was light and the frosting was not overwhelming. The layers were constructed impressively. Flavor was good but not amazing.
Chocolate mousse: (5/10) the kid wanted to try it but didn’t like it: the mousse was spiced (perhaps with cayenne?) and too spicy for him. Meanwhile, I found it a bit grainy (perhaps from cayenne?), with the whip on top being too thick (seemed like it belonged in a tiramisu, perhaps, or on top of a shooter), but a lighter one may not have been stable enough. Seemed like a more grown up concept of a dessert executed in too juvenile a medium. I think it has potential.
Ease of use of the sampler card: 10/10. Getting food and drinks was so easy with this, I loved not having to pull my card out all the time.
