It wasn't a fix, they did it because of the 50th anniversary.
Yeah, I know. By “fix” I meant it feels like an odd thing to tinker with, 50th anniversary or not. Maybe I just don’t run in circles where the previous train whistle sound was a source of discontent, but I never heard anyone pining for them to bring back the old whistle or anything.

By contrast, I feel like lots more people have been asking for them to, say, change the music in San Marco. Just feels like an “If it ain’t broke…” situation.

The new whistle is considerably less loud then the old one and carries considerably less far then the old one. I wonder if the change isn't part of addressing the on going noise complaint issues from Kings Mill.
The volume was never an issue. Swapping whistles happens all the time on steam trains, and there was never any fix or justification to the changing the whistle. The sole reason for the change is simply to address park history for the 50th

I have no idea if they reason for the change was the noise level or not but I have personally been to board meetings when BGW has been applying for wavers of height or other issues where noise levels especially at night have been brought up by Kings Mill. The train whistle from personal experience can easily be heard from many areas of Kings Mill so it certainly could be a reason for experimenting with a change.

Yeah and that would make sense, but I have heard from sources on the railroad that the 3 chime isn't even a permanent thing. It would probably make Kingsmill happy, but it isnt staying past this season

Kingsmill has been complaining about that whistle for decades. There are stories of the more well connected residents calling August Busch at his office to complain about it and he basically telling them to fuck off.

At least we still get a whistle. The Town of Ashland has forced CSX to stop using the whistle. The trains now only use a bell at crossings within the town limits.
City of Williamsburg has done the same thing at the Henry street crossing
