It seems like it would actually be a tighter timetable. They opened Soak City not knowing there was any problem according to what I've heard. KD/CF has likely been evaluating Volcano options for nearly a year now (if not longer).

I’m pretty sure a coaster requires more planning than a water slide complex

Coasters don’t require massive amounts of plumbing rerouting and new water sources.

That being said, has Planet Snoopy spread to that part of the park yet?

NEW FOR 2020! SNOOPY'S OASIS

OPENING IN MAY.
_

No but to be completely serious. Both Whitewater and ProSlide have a bunch of standard models that don't need much in the way of infrastructure to be assembled in an amusement park. They have 10 months before SC opens for the 2020 season there's plenty of time to think up something minor, if they weren't already planning something before Big Wave Bay learned Fissure via Technical Machine.

No, but they do require a good amount of electricity, which can definitely be a problem when it comes to expanding to new areas, requiring new lines to new (or existing) areas to increase the available power in the area. See - Festhaus park over the past year.

To be fair... wouldn’t that turnaround time be equally tight if Big Wave’s demise was as sudden and unexpected as rumored?

This whole thing about "suddenly" announced closure of Volcano is horse caca. That final decision was probably made in the fall of 2018. They started the demo less than 2 weeks later after the public announcement. To schedule the workers and equipment needed for a 3.5 month demolition project does not happen overnight. Plus, the saving of the queue house and that cinder block "building" (that was originally inside the mountain); near the Avalanche lift hill, means KD gave some thought as to what to salvage for potential future use.

^That seems kind of unfair, considering the park’s tweet itself literally says Big Wave is being replaced with another attraction.

The park has still gone through so much turnover in the past several years and is in a net loss for rides lol

This is a solid point but I can't imagine that they need substantially more than the wave pool already had. There was already substantial electrical and water there. I will say that I think there is more than enough time for a small slide complex. From what I've been told by people at Busch the decision to build Finnegan's wasn't made until 10-12 months out. This was after they cancelled Madrid but decided they still wanted something in 2019. It is definitely possible for them to install something that is off the shelf.

So much this. It’s pretty obvious KD was thinking about Volcano’s fate for a couple or so years now and planned out a demolition scenario. Usually you don’t demolish a ride until you have a succession plan in place (either what to do with the area or if the ride is sold somewhere).

The only ride that hasn’t been replaced, or is in the process of being replaced, is Tornado. And what’s wrong with turnover? In the case of Big Wave, that wave pool was hardly ever open anyway. The potential for a new attraction that operates more regularly, sounds promising to me.

If it increases the overall uptime in the park I'm all for it. Big Wave Bay's problems up until this year mostly came from lack of staff during the crunch periods of the year. It may cause a cut in the capacity of the water park but increasing uptime will look much better than having a half full wave pool on the off days that Big Wave was actually open.

I got to thinking about what impact the purchase of the two Schlitterbahn water parks in Texas might have on what water attraction(s) KD might receive in 2020. I am sure Cedar Fair corporate gave the Texas parks a good going over before deciding to purchase them. Schlitterbahn did a lot of in-house design/development for their parks including the 1st water coaster. (I would prefer to keep the Kansas City incident out of this).

CF/KD could take Schlitterbahn attraction plans to a 3rd party engineering company to review and update to improve reliability, capacity, and safety. Any thoughts?

My hopes are a gimmick raft slide to replace Tornado of some kind (not necessarily in Tornados area). A copy of the slides at Carolina Harbor with the bowl and the wave would more than satisfy that for me. A Mat racer would also be very nice to have. I know it's unlikely but a 2nd vastly superior lazy river in the back area would be so nice...………………...also a swim-up bar because I'm a high-functioning alcoholic.

I would say after 2021 this would be a fine time to address the space issues by moving the water park to the other side of Racer 75 entirely.

Construct a secondary entrance by Twimbers, since the water park is only a couple hundred feet away anyways, and use the freed up space that Soak City North would have to add some rides. Hell fill the lake in completely and they won't have to worry about themselves being painted in a corner for a few years.

It's a huge stretch, but you can go about it rather smartly with relocating some of the extant slides and structures to save some money.

Neither Baja Bends nor Freestylin’ have their own independent pump systems - both rely on Lazy Rider’s system - so I fear moving any of the existing North Side attractions except Splash Island would be a preventatively costly venture. I think the more likely option is that the park will continue to expand the South Side of Soak City and leave North Side untouched until its attractions eventually reach the end of their service life. Then maybe the old Hurricane Reef area will cut its ties with the waterpark.

But I also said Volcano wouldn’t be closing anytime soon so who knows :p

Joe is correct in that ALL the water attractions in the former Hurricane Reef section were tied to one common pump filtration system (Including the 4 defunct slide towers and the old kiddie section). All the water from those attractions flowed back into the lazy river and then out along the outer rim of LR just past where you enter it.

As far as a second entrance to Soak City, I just don't see that happening. As far as I know, the only CF parks that have two water park entrances are those that are built where they have a border with their parking lot. So, they have ONE internal park entrance and one external entrance from the parking lot (Kings Island and Carowinds).

If KD decides to eventually move all water park attractions south of Racer75, its possible they could relocate the water park entrance between TT and Apple Zapple.

Not to superbly nitpick here: Dorney Park has 2 entrances (By Talon and Thunder Canyon, and could have a 3rd by splash landing), Canada's Wonderland (on either side of Yukon Striker).

**Worth nothing Knotts, Cedar Point; their water parks are separate.
