On another note, I wonder if those of us who experienced Questor were more disappointed with BFE than those who hadn't? Any thoughts on this?
I've noted this before, so sorry to repeat myself... but what really grabbed me about Questor was the organic, mechanical-gadgety feeling of the whole thing. And that extended to the contraption-heavy, non-virtual nature of the pre-show. Kind of interesting... a simulator ride themed via a very real physical presence. After that, I've found the projector-heavy pre-shows to be a letdown because they don't offer the same "that's actually right there in front of me" physical experience. Ironic on a simulator attraction? Maybe. Either way, I doubt I'd be anchored in that without Questor.

Truth be told, it isn't only BFE that suffers for the comparison. I honestly don't think many parks would entertain the notion of creating or commissioning that kind of physical-device theming for a sim anymore, given that projections and CGI can achieve such a wide range of pre-show experiences without the need for complex mechanical assemblies. ...Or at least, I feel there is a greater appetite for digital complexities than for new mechanical complexities.

The appetite for digital-heavy visuals has its limits too, of course, even as a central feature of the ride system. Right, Ludwig?

To me, this felt more like "Irish-themed stuff on the walls" than "BFE theming." True theming would merge with the story itself.

I kind of disagree with this to a point. Yeah, a lot is bit generic. However, the banners are dragons that have a black light effect to Balor. Additionally, the light fixtures are very reminiscent of fairies. There could be a lot more though.

Well that's kinda BFE's point. There's a magical 'hidden' side to Ireland that you can't see on the surface.
Okay, I get it from that perspective. I still don’t care for the ride or the atmosphere, but when you put it like this it at least makes more sense.

At the end of the ride video you get brought back to where you started. This has brought me to the theory that the heart of Ireland is stolen by the villain every 1-3 minutes and that they have to keep saving it. What a horrible life to have to keep doing the same thing. Any other speculations?

The love of Ireland just isn’t strong enough... :(

Edited because my phone auto correct hates me.

I wonder if the park will leave the ride the way it currently is so they can focus on Finnegan's Flyer, or they can do small updates to this ride at the same time. It would be cool, but even I doubt that.

Ok, I know I'm not an animator but even I think you must be exaggerating a little. IMO Battle for Eire's CG and lighting looks more refined than what could be done back in 2001.

The foreground images are fine. If you look at the backrounds and scenes, they are borderline stock templates.

I had really high hopes for this ride and while I find certain elements really neat, overall I felt underwhelmed. I was sitting with some younger family and when the animation started they all started freaking out and saying "don't look down" but I couldn't allow myself to forget it was just VR.

I'm not sure why Darkastle worked so much better except for the fact that there was real movement and props along with 3D video. It's like watching a movie with practical effects vs complete CGI. It's hard to have any connection when you know nothing is real in front of you. Maybe I am just old but I need some reality or something tangible to get me really excited.

I think anybody who says CSH's animation isn't outdated/matches BFE's quality is either remembering CSH through rose-tinted glasses or has forgotten how far animation technology has come. I love CSH, but the animation is very rudimentary in my opinion.

Now, BFE's graphics aren't setting any records. but at worst they're on par with modern video game graphics- which is still leaps ahead the unpolished late-90s appearance of CSH.
