I don't see how updating a public blog post is not "publicly admitting that [Volcano] would be closing."

By the way, keep in mind BGW never said DarKastle closed because it broke. They said it was being removed to make way for special events space, which gave them a "replacement" to offer as an excuse. KD has no option but to say "it broke and we don't know what's happening now," which I think is completely different from a PR perspective.

I can't help but think about DK right now.

There was public outcry saying they should've invested the money into it to keep it around. BGW decided it was more fiscally responsible to close it, and we weren't happy.

Now KD has made the "mistake" of putting all that money into trying to get it back up to par, listening to the public outcry, instead of making the fiscally responsible decision to just close it.

I feel like the parks can never win.

Huge difference though: DarKastle wasn’t an icon at BGW. Sure it was well received but it’s not a prime reason why people go to the park. Volcano justified the investment.

I agree it wasnt a icon, the Festhaus, Big Ben, the bridge over the Rhine to me were the icons I associate wth the park and many marketing ideas they used as was the general outline of the coasters against the sky. At KD its Effiel tower, and Volcano that stand out to me.

Hate to continue the off-topic ness.

Nobody is making the argument DK is the park's only icon. I think it is very valid to call it an icon though. That tower alone is a visual symbol not soon forgotten and only found at BGW, whereas a lot of parks actually have german-style restaurants resembling that of Festhaus. That tower of DK is a very unique, in-house created symbol, likewise to that of the KD mountain (not in stature of course). It is not just a replica of something else.

Keep in mind, when KD made the announcement through their website blog, not only did it spread like wildfire thoughout the internet, especially coaster/amusement park web sites. The story was run on all local TV stations and newspaper. Who needs to announce it on Facebook/Twitter?

Secondly, just because KD made the Volcano closing public less than 2 weeks ago, does not mean they decided right then and there to close the coaster permanently. My guess it was decided in the 2nd half of last year (Aug-Sept is my guess).

I don't think we are ever going to know the true reason(s) for the coaster's closing. I don't want to keep banging my head on a wall as to why Volcano is gone. The deal is done and the ride is on its way out.

My guess is that KD starts dismantling or demolishing the coaster by the end of this month or beginning of March. I would think the upper portion of the coaster closest to Avalanche would be 1st to go this spring. The rest of the dismantling/demolishing could occur during daily operations in the summer without impacting any other attraction.

Whatever replaces Volcano probably would not be something for 2020. I get the feeling folks are going to be looking at an extinct volcano shell or an open grassy field for next season.

So: a restaurant, a clock, and a bridge (which you can't even name) are more iconic than the park's multimillion-dollar original dark ride?
And so what if I didnt name the Rhine River bridge by its propper name.....people call Epcot Centers Icon Space Ship Earth the "golf ball" all the time but that does not mean its not the parks icon just because they dont use the exact name.

I can vouch for this; my girlfriend who doesn't even know what Kings Dominion is heard that Volcano closed.

I'm truly surprised how you're equating Spaceship Earth to an ugly bridge.

DK was a ride hidden away inside of a show building that many guests didnt even ride because they either got sick riding it, had kids that were scared to ride it, or didnt ride it because they had no idea what it was. By it closing for them it means nothing, the building is still there and thats all they saw anyhow even when itbwas in operation. The Volcano was a huge landmark that could be seen even before you entered the park. I dont care who you are seeing the huge fireball from the parking lot was impressive and whether or not you rode you still saw that visual of the volcano erupting. I remember Carrot Top doing a preformance years ago and every time it erupted he made a comment about it throughout the whole show. It was a huge element of the overall park.

How does getting back on topic sound? I apologise if I accidentally caused this, but I see things about to take a turn.
