Trains were seen rolling down 60 earlier today. Looks like they got a fresh coat of paint.

Maybe with the new paint, they will finally put graphics back on the thing. Hopefully something to do with the ride's 35th Birthday!:D

That would be really weird to see while you are driving down the road.
"Hey kids, look. It's the Loch Ness Monster trains."

I remember when we had a leaked photo of Mach Tower parked at a mall somewhere.

EDIT: I would have linked to it but sadly it has been lost in the catacombs of the forums. I have search for 20 minutes and have not found it :( Sadly, our Mach Tower news is divided into a few different very long threads and not one single one.

Hi Everyone I'm New here As you might know. And I thought that my first post should go in the thread of my favorite Roller Coaster. I know this isn't most people's choice, but yes I have ridden every ride in BGW, and I love Loch Ness Monster Just because I love the originality of it. And I also hope that it doesn't go anywhere until the day I die.....:)

Correction: You hope it doesn't go anywhere at all... ever. :p Don't want to think of that day just yet. BBW was enough.
I love Nessie and I could ride it all day if I really wanted to.

Anyways welcome to the forums!

Welcome JuniorBGWfan28! You certainly seem passionate about the park and I appreciate your enthusiasm. I loved your "Glissade" story by the way.

While these articles are not by Nora, they are fabulous, they are both by the site's founder Chris

I just figured out this year is LNM's 35th anniversary. I wonder if BGW will go all out and put "35 years of....." on the cars and signs. I know they probably will. However they have skipped out on a lot of other coaster's anniversaries that end in a 5. like Griffon's 5th, and Alpengeist's 15th birthday last year. Yea they did do BBW's but that was the year it was going to be retired, so I think it was mandatory for BGW to do it for BBW. Can anybody clear my eyes on this because I don't know if they are actually gonna celebrate the anniversary.

25th is also a silver anniversary, which is traditionally a milestone to celebrate. I don't think BGW will go as far to celebrate a 35th anniversary year, but they did update LNM to feature its overall ride stats for 30 years of operation. As far as I'm aware it could just be a little easter egg like that instead of banners and stickers everywhere.

I have a couple Questions about LNM that hopefully you guys could answer:
1. Why doesn't the wheels on the train grip it tight like B&M coasters do?
2. Could we ever Tighten it to make the ride more smooth?
3. Does vekoma have tightened wheels on their trains?
And I have some Information/suggestions about the ride:
1. I found out from a former tour guide in a line for a haunted house that LNM does have a 4th train, but the park doesn't rip it apart for spare parts they rotate one off every season so each one can get the right amount of riding time.
2. The train they do tear apart for spare parts is the Drachen Fire train.
3. I think that the ride does need new trains, as this discussion took place on page 1 of this thread, and I think the first one suggested will be the one they are replaced with. This is because the second one listed has a seat belt which will make the loading/off-loading process longer.
4. People are saying that they will tear down LNM for the stress on the track and chain. However, this will probably take tens of hundreds of years to happen. This is because the steel track on BBW was thinner, and had a lot more stress put on it. And the chain won't have a problem because technically LNM has a pre-drop which reduces stress on the chain.

It would be great if I could get answers to these questions.

1. Arrow designed their coasters with paper and pencil and they made a lot of mistakes doing so. There was miscalculations all over the place with the track and the trains and they never were able to get the tight fit on the rails that we see now a days. Also with the rails being on the inside of the cross ties also effects the measurements (correct me if I'm wrong).
2. No due to the nature of how the ride was designed it would be better to replace the entire track and a slight redesign to the track itself.
3. I don't know, but I think so.

1.The 4th train is not from Drachen Fire it is from the defunct Python (I think that's it) from BGT. Drachen Fire was a different style type of train and I'm sure it wouldn't run on the LNM track. (again correct me if I'm wrong) Also I'm sure the DF trains took a rough beating since, from what i've heard, the ride was super rough.
2. Answered in 1.
3.All the new trains will do is make the ride more comfortable for the rider. Nothing really performance ride other than slight speed changes and maybe some maintenance things.
4. The steel will not last hundreds of hundreds of years (even if that is an exaggerated). I'm not an expert on this subject so maybe someone else can chime in on this. But I know the steel won't last no more at the max maybe 30-ish years. But I'm not a steel expert so don't quote me on that.
Also just because there is a pre-drop doesn't mean all stress from the chain is gone, it just means there is less stress. The chains have pulled the trains millions of times and remember each train weights a couple tons each and before the train actually starts going forward the train rolls back until the chain dog catches putting even more force onto the chain (and the chain dogs). Also chain can be replaced. On some coasters the chain is removed for the winter (not sure about this again).

Actually Arrow designed LNM to run with 4 trains with one less car on each train. Soon after opening they realized that there wasn't any capacity gained by running 4 trains so they instead added a car to each of the 3 other trains. As far as I know, the park kept what remained of that 4th train and used it for parts. When Python closed at BGT, BGW likely got those trains as well.

As for Drachen Fire, yes, it ran a completely different style train and it's unlikely that parts would be cross-compatible.

^^^ Thanks, but didn't python only 6 cars on each train? Or did they have 7 so they can be a replacement train for LNM?

But for the Drachen fire trains when I said took apart I meant wheels and stuff, because the DF wheels do fit on LNM, because they ran on the same kind of track.

I've been in LNM's maintence bay there are 3 trains, they did get Python's trains which have been completely merged into all of the existing trains on Nessie. One of the cars you sit in very well may be a repainted Python car. There are no Drachen Fire parts on LNM. The wheels were different, and the track is different. Lastly there is a manufactuer in Richmond that BGW has a contract to buy LNM wheels from.

3. Does vekoma have tightened wheels on their trains?

From a few sources, the wheels on Vekoma's older coasters do not touch the track (which is why a lot of those rides are known to be rough). The wheels for those rides are also designed by a separate source.

On the newer stuff (Battlestar Galactica, Stingray) as well as some of their Disney installations, the wheels do touch the track and are manufactured in-house. In Disney's case, a lot of their stuff is manufactured in-house as well.

I think this is another sign that BGW is willing to put in money to a coaster that is aging. This is proof that they are willing to keep around LNM for as long as it takes. However, I wish we had pictures, it would've been fun to see LNM's trains on an interstate. They are probably painting the logo on the front car again because, they haven't had the logo since the 30th anniversary. And maybe painting The 35th anniversary sign on it.;)

I don't understand why they don't have a Loch Ness Monster sign on the front car. You paint it once and it's there the whole season. Not too much of an effort...
