RE: Shockwave to Close Forever on August 9th

We all know that we are expecting something next year now, I think more than likely it will be flats but does anyone have other opinions?

To be fair, anything can happen with it closing this early! Remember the dismantling of Disaster Transport didn't begin until August 6th for GateKeeper. I'm not saying expect a GateKeeper sized coaster, but with the August 9th removal date it definitely seems like they're making way for something of significant value in 2016 or they sold it and have to get it to the buyer by a certain date.

Also, according the Richmond Times-Dispatch...
Kings Dominion plans to make an announcement on a replacement next month.

So 3 things to take from this quote:
1.) August announcement
2.) The site will be used for 2016 and not sit empty until 2017
3.) I already like KD2016 better than Shockwave and Tempesto's comfort collars

RE: Shockwave to Close Forever on August 9th

I am with Joe on this one I rode it this year for the first time after everyone telling me stay away from it and found it a nice ride. maybe it's because I grew up riding horses and have stronger leg muscles in different areas then the average person an can stablive better on the seat but I found it rather pain free.

That said load time is always a nightmare. I can see why it's time to say bye to it but I for one am not sure about the August 9th end date. I don't see why you end a ride in the middle of summer it's not like they will be able to do much removal work while the park is open and don't you want as much people absorption possible during labor day weekend? Seems to me waiting a month might have been better.

If kings dominion needs it out of there to start building a new attraction then they don't really have the time to wait, and with that how long should a ride of this size take to be fully removed?

Should go well with the road-kill buffet to debut in 2016. Thomas is already drooling at the thought.

I might be wrong but from a safety stand point how much can they do removing wise while the general public is around?  BG had to close Apollo and control crowd flow while tempsto was being built I am assuming that many of the same issues/concerns apply to this.  But I am not an expert in this area so I could be wrong and if so see why they want to start now.

RE: Shockwave to Close Forever on August 9th

Given the last line in the "official" press release, "Additional plans for the 2016 season will be announced at a later date.", as well as the statement, "Shockwave is being retired for future growth in the Candy Apple Grove section of Kings Dominion.", it is a 50/50 toss up as to whether KD is getting a coaster next year or a flat ride package for CAG.

If a flat ride package is in the works, I could see a Huss Giant Frisbee or a Zamperla Giant Discovery going in. If we get something of this size, I would expect maybe one other small/medium flat.

If the park goes with a group of small/medium flats, I think it could be a Disk'O flat; along with a new Huss Enterprise ride (Strong feelings/hunch on this one). And maybe a 3rd flat, something simple like a Tilt-A-Whirl.

If a coaster, then a steel one.

The park could block sections of the path that runs in front of ShockWave.

If sold or scrapped, KD will need a certain amount of time to remove the trains; disconnect the electrical and air/hydraulics. Then, depending on where they want to begin to dismantle the track, get a crane in position to start removing track sections/supports. Since the coaster does not exceed 100 feet in height a large hydraulic crane would be needed for the lift hill and loop. The rest of the ride could be taken down by a small/medium hydraulic crane.

The only ride I could see being impacted is the Bad Apple. Plus, I think All Wheel Sports ends their show on August 9th. Since no one will be in the amphitheater after that time, it should not impact any shows. (I wonder if KD ended the show a week early so the dismantling could begin). If any other paths are impacted, it would be on each end of the ride site (lift hill side and helix side). Again, this would be mainly for the placement of the crane.

Cedar fair has been putting these things in lately. I hope they use a better quality manufacturer than this one. https://www.facebook.com/dru.larson.5/videos/514360632046696/

Well, since Cedar Point has one and Carowinds received one this year, I would not be surprised if KD gets a sling-shot pay-per attraction in the near future. I just hope Cedar Fair will retire the Sky Flyer and/or the go-carts to make room for this. I don't think KD wants to be the pay-per attraction capital of the Cedar Fair chain! :'(

Given the past history of these pay-per attractions, I guess the go-carts would go before the Sky-Flyer. Carowinds did relocate their Sky-Flyer within the last 2 years and then got the sling-shot this year. In my opinion, KD's Sky-Flyer takes up too much prime real estate in the park (ground and air space clearance for the free-fall swing).

I wish the park would remove the Sky-Flyer or relocate the attraction to some back corner of the park. I could think of several possibilities for that space:

1) Use the whole area for a major flat like a Huss Giant Frisbee or Zamperla Giant Discovery.

2) If we end up with a Sling-Shot pay-per attraction, place it at one edge of the lot and use the rest for flat ride(s) and/or for part of a new coaster to pass through. Since this type of attraction has a small foot print and needs just vertical air space clearance, it gives the park greater flexibility on where to place it.

Course, all of this might conflict with what the park wants to do with the ShockWave site and its immediate surroundings; but, there are a ton of possibilities that could happen!

I always thought that the Flying Ace kids ride was ripe to be removed, especially after they expanded the children's area.  It's sort of stuck off by itself in a dead end away from the other kids rides, and with the expanded number of rides in the new kids area, they dont need it as much.  It was also a bit of an outlier as only taller/older children can ride it due to the height requirement.  If they removed/re-located that, then that now opens up quite a bit more space around Shockwave.  And if they dont use the theater that much, that could go and you would definitely have more room to work with.

as much as I dislike theme park "shows" as a rule, I hate the idea of taking down a theater with a good fly loft. Every good proscenium arch theater is summer stock waiting to happen.

Translation? (apologies for not understanding your theater talk.)

RE: Shockwave to Close Forever on August 9th

Well. If we recall back to last year's plans for the waterpark expansions, there was a glimpse of a new theater in safari village near backlot. Perhaps those sets of plans were a part of KD'S master plan for the next few years and the new safari village stage is somewhat of a replacement for the all wheels theater. So that if they were to remove a theater/show from their entertainment line up they'd have one to take its place and not damage the already thin entertainment department of Kings Dominion.
