RE: Marco Polo's Marketplace & San Marco Changes

Agreed, it's a touch of old-world flavor at last! And the paintjob in that picture isn't *so* bad. Still hoping it fades out a bit though. All in all Italy's facelift seems to be going well.

Yeah its like they incorporated a modern design with a traditional feel. I actually love the sign. I also hope that the paint on the walls fades a substantial amount.

I agree that the paint should fade significantly in other areas. I only hope the restaurant doesn't fade to a shade of pink. I don't want to plan my meal while thinking about Pepto-pink.

I had REALLY held out hope that they would have removed the vomit worthy crap they served before, for a different menu. If you can not serve pasta right because whatever reason, don't serve it. If you insist on serving it, find an innovative way to make smaller batches more frequently.

Hopefully the new market style will eliminate some of the problems with the pasta quality. The whole idea is to keep people from waiting in long lines. Pasta, and many other great foods can only undergo so much with temperature and humidity changes. It's the same reason as to why the park doesn't serve Schnitzel. Yet.

I absolutely love the look of this place. One thing though, the building that houses the stage looks awfully out of place without paint...aha

Another picture.

RE: Marco Polo's Marketplace & San Marco Changes

I didn't think the dryers on the sinks were intuitive...i.e. I had trouble figuring out that I needed to place my hands just to the right and left of the spigot over the sensors to make the dryers work. That is even after I watched the Dyson video. Maybe I am just remedial though.

I too had the same trouble.

RE: Marco Polo's Marketplace & San Marco Changes

Three really faint murals depicting Marco Polo's travels on far left wall as you enter the Marketplace.

RE: Marco Polo's Marketplace & San Marco Changes

I cannot begin to express how impressed I was by Marco Polo's Marketplace. They weren't even serving food yet- they were simply letting guests in to take a look at the facility. But I was still blown away.

Marco Polo's Marketplace is absolutely gorgeous, yet it fits the "Old Country" feel of the park like a glove, which isn't something that can be said for many of the park's recent additions. The earthy color scheme contrasts with the marbled stone floor to create an elegant yet "adventurous" mood. Plus, the room is filled with stunning decorations, such as blown-glass lights and a massive chandelier of colored glass orbs. Despite its elegant appeal, the decor all felt appropriate to the time period being represented (classical Italy).

My favorite part, though, was the theming. Yes: theming in a restaurant! Throughout the Marketplace are massive, floor-to-ceiling cutouts made to look like aged parchment paper, as if they are pages from Marco Polo's explorer's journal. On the papers are crude drawings and simple notes that look like they were simply jotted down by Marco Polo himself to document his travels.

And they're thematically appropriate, too. For example, a page near the lamb rotisserie station is about Marco Polo's encounter with sheep, and a page near the Mongolian grill details Marco Polo's travels to the east. These thematic additions make the Marketplace feel like more than just a restaurant named after a famous explorer, but rather a real place set hundreds of years in the past that the explorer himself would have been part of. I'd really go so far as to say that the theme felt downright "Old Country."

Plus, the menus themselves are displayed upon similarly-shaped pieces of parchment, which I loved. But the menus themselves... oh man. I think I will be able to eat here for lunch and dinner for every visit I make to BGW this year, and not repeat a single meal. There's everything from rotisserie lamb to Mediterranean salad to Mongolian beef to chicken parm. If the meals taste half as good as the restaurant itself looks, we're in for a great treat.

Busch Dominion will be posting an article full of pictures of Marco Polo's Marketplace, as well as other news from Pass Member Preview Day, this weekend. Stay tuned!

The new restaurant is stunning and I agree with Joe that it's gorgeous in an "Old Country" sort of way. Can't wait to eat there.

I'm not sure what to call them but let's go with 'stanchions'. They look like parchment paper and really add to the theming. I was in the restaurant and didn't notice them at the time. Thanks for the awesome video.

RE: Marco Polo's Marketplace & San Marco Changes

To be a bit more... negative... there was one change to San Marco that was NOT welcome. It seems San Marco was sporting a new soundtrack today. And it was HORRIBLE.

The soundtrack switched between contemporary Italian songs to loud 1930's "big band"-style Italian songs, and both genres featured vocals. Both were simply awful. The modern Italian songs clearly clashed with the classical beauty of San Marco, but the big band music was nearly as big an offender. Even though it's relatively old music, the 1930's-sounding songs certainly felt out of place with the theme of a classical Italian garden. The songs were just loud, unfitting, and annoying.

The music made me want to sprint out of San Marco, put Band-Aids on my bleeding ears, and pray for the return of the far-superior Star Spangled Nights soundtrack.

Seriously, though- bring back the classical music. The new soundtrack was actually so annoying that it detracted from the classiness of Marco Polo's Marketplace. And that place is far too awesome to have to suffer from something so silly as a poorly-chosen soundtrack.
